At £185 (plus a fiver delivery), you're ~£30 off a 390 or 970 - a tiny bit more money for massively increased performance.

But at the risk of sounding like a broken record, we're about to enjoy all the lovely new hardware in a couple of months. Don't buy anything unless you're overwhelmingly desperate!

We've had several 390s and 970s from £220-230. Of course, it's disingenuous to suggest that they will always be those prices - if not, then you haven't understood the point of HUKD.

Yep we do. It's called having a HTPC with the power to game on. I've got an MSI version of the 380 and it's made me plenty happy with it's performance levels and that I can sit on the sofa with my G15 and gaming mouse on a tray and play Fallout.

People say that every single time new models are 'around the corner', they arrive, the usual step up in performance appears and then these comments quickly re-appear saying to 'wait for the next generation models they will blow this gen out of the water'. There's nothing wrong with this card for the average gamer, it wont suit hardcore 120fps 4k, ultra super high detail fanboys, but for the average punter wanting to get a decent framerate on modern games it is more than good enough.

The idea of blanket advising people to not upgrading now is a moot point as it really is something to assess based on what they have now and what they can get for their budget.

I'll also add that the prices when the new stuff appears will also bump up for the 'early adopters' as usual.

Whilst I would agree with that, show me where it's £30 - seems more like £50-55. If you're including the profits auctioning off a game code you might receive too, not everyone is gonna do that, and it doesn't change the outlay they have to make to buy one.

AMD Zen is interesting as it was designed by legendary genius CPU architect (he could have picked an easier title) Jim Keller.

http://wccftech.com/legendary-cpu-architect-jim-keller-left-amd-pursue-opportunities-x86-zen-track/

40% IPC increase.

Intel need AMD to keep going because of the X86 licence, if AMD falls then Samsung for example (God forfend!) could come in and have a go at Intel. So that's another on my list of things that fck over the consumer:

1. DX12 owned by Microsoft, platform religion is Windows 10 only on desktops and Xbox One on console

Answer to the above, get PS4 using Vulkan API, AMD using Vulkan API and everyone who can using it.

2. Nvidia Gameworks

Answer: Don't buy Nvidia? Hmm ah well

3. X86 Licence

Answer: No answer unless AMD dies. Intel R&D is truly massive, needs some big boots to fill but AMD isn't dead so it's moot.

I was clarifying, that's all. No need to get on your high horse. But there are many differences between a 280x and a 380x.
vulcanproject
13 Mar 16 1 #52
It's barely a revision compared to 14nm FinFet. It's barely a refresh. 28nm Tonga is 18 months old and the brethren that is the 280X which offers performance within 5 percent of this is well over 2 years old. 280X of course being the same sort of performance as 7970ghz.

The question should be if you haven't bought something of this class and around this sub £230 pricepoint the past 2 years which is where they have hovered that entire time- why the heck would you buy this now unless you had some obvious pressing need?

Well you wouldn't, and shouldn't.
Ferrari100
13 Mar 16 #51
But it's not the same revision as a 280x

I bet you had to look that up.
LOL
rev6
13 Mar 16 1 #50
Still similar performance
Ferrari100
13 Mar 16 #49
Its a different GCN revision.
vulcanproject
13 Mar 16 #48
It's essentially a 280X in terms of performance. The memory bus is cut down by comparison and the clocks pumped with a few other revisions, but the base architecture (GCN) is the same 28nm based generation that began with Southern Islands and then the 28x boards. The overarching point of the post was that the new generation is a major revision on a new process with enormous performance per watt gains, whereas this shares most of those roots with the 28x. Particularly the 285 (tonga) if you want to be totally precise. Which is still an 18 month old board....
vulcanproject
13 Mar 16 1 #46
People also always say what you say. The point being if you want something that has a chance of lasting more than 6 months before it's already fairly dated, then buy near the start of a major generational shift, not the end of one!

This I made quite clear. This isn't a case of 'wait, wait, wait', it's a case of why buy something at the end of it's life rather than something near the start, unless of course you have killer discounts on it.

This is good advice, ESPECIALLY if you do not already have a card of this sort of performance, meaning you don't usually buy the newest thing and may also be unaware of the major step change we are verging on.

You might have a point against people saying wait if it was 6 months ago, or a year ago, but on the brink of a new generation which could launch as early as 2 months from now it's only sound advice to make people aware........
rev6
13 Mar 16 1 #45
You're right, there's always something new around the corner... But not every year there's a GPU dieshrink, and not every year there's a new API that promises to change PC gaming (not something like DX11 to DX11.1). They would hold me back from upgrading today.
Or waiting just for the price drops when they're released.

Don't buy new cards unless desperate for one NOW. Only because this is essentially revised 280X performance. A card from over 2 years ago, while we're at most 6 months away from a massive step change to 14/16nm FinFet models. They will have massively superior performance and thermals, it'll probably be the biggest leap in 4 years. The high end stuff could be here as early as May, with the range filled out more by the end of summer.

The 7990 is a card with 2 GPU's that relies on CFX to function properly, otherwise you just have a 7970, which isn't a bad GPU. It's bad when it doesn't scale right or isn't supported at all as you may as well just bought a 7970.

Don't always believe those charts. On most day-to-day applications, including games, my 780TI rarely draws more than 150W. You really have to abnormally stress it out to reach its peak rated TDP. Current AMD cards on the other hand are less efficient at lower work loads and run hotter on day-to-day applications. 780s and 780TIs are great value at the moment, if you are willing to forgo the warranty issue.
phoetus
13 Mar 16 #20
Look around for a cheap used GTX 780 TI for around this price. More performance and less power draw than these AMD offerings. Should be plenty good until the new Pascal and Polaris cards come out.

Aretak to kevtheidiot
13 Mar 16 2 #12
The Strix 390 isn't even very good. It runs hotter than most other 390s, reaching the high 80s with the standard fan profile. Asus' customer service is truly awful as well. I'd take XFX's card over it any day.

Both AMD and Nvidia will be releasing new cards in the next few months. They likely won't be in the same price bracket as this one though. Nvidia's will be priced at around £300 (GTX 1070) and £450 (GTX 1080). AMD might release a mid-range model, but what performance it'll offer and what price it'll be is pure guesswork for now.
