The Sony Bravia W80 is an Android, 3D TV with X-Reality PRO taking everything closer to Full HD. With an abundance of channels to choose from in the Smart hub and Freeview HD, this Sony TV offers hours of immersive entertainment.
Full HD & 3D
See every moment in 1080p Full HD. Colours appear more realistic, blacks are darker and overall contrast is tuned to reveal more detail on screen. And with Active 3D, more depth is added to every moment which also provides clearer edges and great screen viewing angles. Wear the active 3D glasses (available separately) to convert the image when they are turned on and functioning.
X-Reality PRO
Improving everything you watch is X-Reality PRO. The engine maximizes the picture quality of the full range of input sources, everything from dazzling 1080p Blu-ray Disc™ (BD) movies all the way to very low-resolution, highly-compressed Web video. After analysing each pixel and comparing patterns, the system restores detail lost in compression and transmission. The system also reduces noise and reproduces optimum contrast, colour and sharpness. The result is that you experience stunning picture quality with better clarity, for anything you watch.
Smooth motion
With Motionflow XR 800Hz, every image on the screen refreshes at a higher rate than normal. Sports and fast-moving action look noticeably smoother, sharper and more natural, with reduced blur and judder.
Android TV
Your Smart TV has just got smarter with Android. Developed by Google, you'll be able to enjoy seamless entertainment, intelligent search and the latest apps from the likes of Google Play and Netflix*. All the personalization, intelligence and entertainment of your Smartphone or tablet can be easily viewed on the Sony TV too which takes your viewing experience to a whole new level.
Additional entertainment
In addition to a wealth of online entertainment, YouView will come into play on the BRAVIA W80 on the 4th November 2015. The seven day scroll back TV guide brings together catch up TV from across BBC iPlayer**, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5***. Visit Sony Support for further launch information.
Compatible with the Sony 43-inch TV is One-Flick Entertainment which enables you to comfortably flick your way through TV schedules, web clips, photos and more on the ultra-responsive touchpad area. The One-Flick Touchpad Remote (sold separately) is even enabled with NFC (Near-Field Communication) so you can share photos wirelessly from your Smart device straight to the TV screen, at a single touch.

DO NOT TOUCH these Sony Android Tv's. I've had one (well 2 now) and i'm taking it back for a full refund. Sony are using customers to trial their Android software on TV's. Whilst it's potentially a good idea the Tv's are full of bugs.. Lock up's, restart by themselves, video stutter, Netflix issues. If you don't believe me google "Sony android Tv fault" You will find the Sony community forum currently on about page 580 of faults and people complaining!!! You have been warned!!

I just took delivery of the KDL50W807C from the Tesco offer last week. Whilst the picture quality is good 'head on', the viewing angle is extremely narrow. Beyond about 30 degrees either side the contrast really starts to drop off. I guess I was spoilt with my electricity guzzling plasma.

Yes, you and I - we both were. Plasma were excellent at any angles not LCD/LED. But, that is the way the world is going these days.

I'm massively tempted by this TV, but torn between this model and the Samsung 40H6400...anyone care to share thoughts?

I have just taken back my second Samsung 40H6400 and exchanged it for the Sony (John Lewis already priced matched this for me last week at £399). The problem with the Samsung was the Smart feature, as I was putting it in the bedroom where I only had an aerial and no sky/Virgin so the smart was what I wanted. The Samsung TV it great in itself, sleek, picture perfect etc BUT the smart is absolutely rubbish. Samsung are aware of an issue with ITV player and whilst is on the tv they don't actually have the licence to run the software therefore every time you load up itv player you get two ads then the tv crashes, then you are not able to use any other app until you reset the TV at the wall. The first Samsung I returned was a lot worse with a delayed reaction and the crashing whereas the second one had the speed but just crashed when in smart. Tesco helpline and Samsung helpline are aware of the poor stability of the smart function and admit they have had issues since the launch and trying to get licences since 2014!!! Another problem is Samsung run on its own platform (not android like others) so the support is a lot less. If you are not fussed about smart or plugging into sky or Virgin then the smart feature becomes a moot point and the TV is great. Hope this helps.

I had the same choice a few months ago and plumped for the Samsung.
Historically a Sony person, however this Samsung is massively impressive and I am not surprised by all of the awards it won.
At the time it was a no brainer, as the Android TV was beyond a joke on the Sony.
Some points to note:
Samsung Pro's
. More vibrant picture
. Impressive sound from the standard speaker (above average)
. Voice controlled remote included in the pack
. The menus are rapid, no delay as with most Sony products
Samsung Negatives
. This would be perfect if a 43"
. The depth is less sleek than the Sony
. The stand is wider and deeper than the Sony, so if you have a small area to put it on...
Sony Pro's
. Better aesthetics
. More of a studio quality screen - i.e more natural but it does feel dull next to the Samsung
Sony Negatives
. Sound is worse
. Screen (see above)
. Android TV did have very poor reviews but I understand they have improved this and added some of the promised channels

I recently swapped my KDL-50W805C (essentially the 50" version of this one) for a 48H6400 (48" version of the Samsung you're looking at). The Samsung is clearly an older model; the design and the stand look a little odd compared to the very thin bezels and low profile stands of the 2015/16 models but it still looks decent enough. Picture quality is excellent, and having had two of the Sonys the panel on the Samsung is better quality.
The smart features and interface are a bit clunky on the Samsung and while it has a lot of apps available, some of them do seem a bit behind. Spotify's is fairly basic for example, but it works fine and it's nice to have it whereas the Sony's Android TV didn't at all. That being said, it's fairly straightforward and easy to use and it's far less unacceptable to performance issues than the Sony was and I haven't had it crash, freeze or need to restart since I've had it (albeit that's five days) which is more than could be said for the Sony. Android TV has some potential but the lack of apps and the poor implementation of it by Sony on their models totally ruined the experience for me. Also worth bearing in mind that a number of the apps (iPlayer, Amazon Instant, 4OD etc) aren't even Android apps so they're a bit clunky and slow and you're less likely to get timely updates.
The Samsung comes with 3D glasses as well as a 'smart' remote in addition to the regular one, so you do get some nice extras at least.
I wish the Sony had been better than it was because it was the ideal TV for me but after going through two of them I wasn't keen on trying my luck a third time. The Samsung feels like a bit of a downgrade in some respects (I miss the Cast feature, although a cheap Chromecast will sort that), but it's a great TV and it's exhibited absolutely no software or hardware issues or niggles so far which is more than can be said for the Sonys I had in the same timeframe.
Edit: Just seen the post a few above this one regarding these two models and I agree with all points. The speakers are surprisingly adequate (certainly better than the Sony had), although a soundbar should still be a mandatory purchase these days.

I spent the weekend mulling over this Sony and a Panasonic in the same price bracket. I went to Curry's to have a look and ended up going with the Samsung.
The Samsung had the most uniform picture and seemed to have better contrast. As has been mentioned, Sony and Panasonic have more neutral panels which is down to personal preference.
The kicker for me was how the 4k TV's dealt with anything under 1080p. I saw artifacts, clouding and wishy washy edges.
If your priority Is a good picture from a variety of sources I'd steer clear of a 4k set unless you're doubling your budget.

I had a look at the Samsung you've mentioned at John Lewis display and it looked better than the Sonys. Take a look before buying. I am a fan of Sony and I have a LCD Sony which is still great, but might lean towards Samsung for my next one.

Samsung 3D glasses work, as long as they are bluetooth, think Argos or Currys sell a twin pack for around £30, the Samsung ones work fine on my Sony TV
