The Sony Bravia W80 is an Android, 3D TV with X-Reality PRO taking everything closer to Full HD. With an abundance of channels to choose from in the Smart hub and Freeview HD, this Sony TV offers hours of immersive entertainment.
Full HD & 3D
See every moment in 1080p Full HD. Colours appear more realistic, blacks are darker and overall contrast is tuned to reveal more detail on screen. And with Active 3D, more depth is added to every moment which also provides clearer edges and great screen viewing angles. Wear the active 3D glasses (available separately) to convert the image when they are turned on and functioning.
X-Reality PRO
Improving everything you watch is X-Reality PRO. The engine maximizes the picture quality of the full range of input sources, everything from dazzling 1080p Blu-ray Disc™ (BD) movies all the way to very low-resolution, highly-compressed Web video. After analysing each pixel and comparing patterns, the system restores detail lost in compression and transmission. The system also reduces noise and reproduces optimum contrast, colour and sharpness. The result is that you experience stunning picture quality with better clarity, for anything you watch.
Smooth motion
With Motionflow XR 800Hz, every image on the screen refreshes at a higher rate than normal. Sports and fast-moving action look noticeably smoother, sharper and more natural, with reduced blur and judder.
Android TV
Your Smart TV has just got smarter with Android. Developed by Google, you'll be able to enjoy seamless entertainment, intelligent search and the latest apps from the likes of Google Play and Netflix*. All the personalization, intelligence and entertainment of your Smartphone or tablet can be easily viewed on the Sony TV too which takes your viewing experience to a whole new level.
Additional entertainment
In addition to a wealth of online entertainment, YouView will come into play on the BRAVIA W80 on the 4th November 2015. The seven day scroll back TV guide brings together catch up TV from across BBC iPlayer**, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5***. Visit Sony Support for further launch information.
Compatible with the Sony 43-inch TV is One-Flick Entertainment which enables you to comfortably flick your way through TV schedules, web clips, photos and more on the ultra-responsive touchpad area. The One-Flick Touchpad Remote (sold separately) is even enabled with NFC (Near-Field Communication) so you can share photos wirelessly from your Smart device straight to the TV screen, at a single touch.

DO NOT TOUCH these Sony Android Tv's. I've had one (well 2 now) and i'm taking it back for a full refund. Sony are using customers to trial their Android software on TV's. Whilst it's potentially a good idea the Tv's are full of bugs.. Lock up's, restart by themselves, video stutter, Netflix issues. If you don't believe me google "Sony android Tv fault" You will find the Sony community forum currently on about page 580 of faults and people complaining!!! You have been warned!!
It's VESA compatible but it was a bit of a ball ache. The top sockets are a fair few inches from the bottom and worse still the centre 'bulge' is scewed to the left to get a flat mounting you'll need a kit similiar to the one you've linked. I also had issues with the Ethernet port being bang centre being obstructed by my mount plate.
Other than that it's a great TV.

But the Samsung also supports Amazon, Netflix and Plex. It also has Spotify (albeit not the best app, but it works fine) which Android TV doesn't and although Spotify supports Chromecast via the mobile app, it still doesn't support casting to an Android TV for some reason.
Incidentally, the Amazon app on the Sony isn't running in Android, same as most of the other UK terrestrial catch-up apps on it.

I purchased this yesterday and got it home - no glasses !
Looked online for a retailer that sells them can not find one
Sony have them for £49
I take it next Ford will be selling cars with no steering wheels because this is how useless a 3d television is with no 3d glasses very disappointed
I have looked around and some people are saying that the samsung active glasses with bluetooth will work does anyone know ? I asked curry who said they wouldn't work and if i bought them and they didn't work they would not refund me so i didn't bother
I have found a pair of glasses on fleabay they are £25 just waiting confirmation they work
Can anyone let me know the model number of any other manufacturers glasses that work
Very disappointed in sony .. just a rip off £100 for two sets of glasses on top of the cost
Heat for john Lewis deal however
yeah they decided to change nearly all there 3D TV's to no glasses included to bring the cost of the TV down
as they used to add nearly £100 to each TV to include 2 pairs.
that's what the Sony rep at John Lewis told me anyway.
and the price of this set has shot down loads in the past year.

I think he means kitchen diner. I think he should also have read his comment back so at least it makes sense or perhaps even learn proper spelling. 43" would be a bit small for my living room though as I did have a 42" for a few years before upgrading for a 47" and now a 50. That's it though no bigger and the 50 is the same width and shorter than the 47" due to the slim bezels they fit now.

Love the look of this TV but my Sony Bravia Full HD from 5 years ago is still going strong, looks good (apart from the large bezel) and sounds good. I suppose if John Lewis price match the old Tesco £329 I might bite. Would like the 3D and easier catch-up options.

Seconded - had 50" version since August and works great - no problems whatsoever. Regular updates and more to come in next few weeks re HDD recording and PIP/PAP. Just tedious using the web browser with an ordinary remote - other than that no downsides at all. Brilliant picture especially in HD - who needs 4k?
I had my Sony W805 update last night - just fixes a few stability issues (none of them experienced by my set!) and remote control issues re speed of response etc

As someone who's been looking for a TV for a small room 42"-48" must be a sweet spot for many people and rarely gets reductions.
Beyond that there is more to selecting a TV than brand and size, the Android TV platform which (despite the rough launch) will have apps working for the next 5 years. My Samsung 8000 series took about 9 months to get any good apps beyond YouTube and within 12 months was dropping services.
Really the bad launch of these TV's is giving the savvy the opportunity to profit from the ignorance in the general public.
I have an older Samsung Smart TV so not sure if the latest version is much better but I would agree that the 'Smart Hub' side of things is pretty substandard. Looks ugly, clunky to navigate and features a restricted selection of half baked apps. A pity, because the TV hardware itself was superb.
I picked up this Sony from the Tesco deal a couple of weeks back to replace it and Android TV is way better as an internet connected OS. The apps work better, it's quick and easy to navigate and there is a much greater app choice. It supports Amazon, Netflix and Google Cast (ie Play movies and music) out of the box. You can install Plex on it easily. A very good 'smart TV' platform IMO.

Right. Not all of us actually live in a place with a kitchen that can accomodate a 43" TV. But many thanks for your snooty comment all the same.
I've got an older version of this TV and my parents have a slightly newer version again. These are great TVs and fantastic for the price, weirdly the smart features on my older one are better than the new ones just because of a simpler interface. A great buy for a good TV and all the better with a long warranty.

Further to the Sony/Samsung comparisons, I will add:-
Samsung pros:- Slightly better picture
Almost instant start-up, whereas you have to wait 60 seconds before you can watch anything on Sony
Excellent smart (I don't have any trouble with ITV catch up)
Will play flv from a usb stick
Input sockets much more easily accessible
TV will swivel on stand
Con:- Occasional judder. Have not noticed any on Sony even with motionflow switched off
Smaller screen obviously
Smartguy1 to furber
3 Feb 16#82
A bit of judder with LG, worse on SD than HD but still there and my LG is a 600 series and was quite expensive when launched. Very annoying on slow moving objects but fine on fast moving which is weird. My old LG was the opposite but the new one is quite jerky even when watching chat shows. Not noticed anything on the Sony when viewing in Currys on the terrestrial channels. I nearly bought the Sony 50KDLW807 recently but I thought the remote was awful. Not too good an excuse not to buy but the Sony looked a better picture than the more expensive LG and Samsung 4k tv's on the same row.

3 Feb 16#28
I have just taken back my second Samsung 40H6400 and exchanged it for the Sony (John Lewis already priced matched this for me last week at £399). The problem with the Samsung was the Smart feature, as I was putting it in the bedroom where I only had an aerial and no sky/Virgin so the smart was what I wanted. The Samsung TV it great in itself, sleek, picture perfect etc BUT the smart is absolutely rubbish. Samsung are aware of an issue with ITV player and whilst is on the tv they don't actually have the licence to run the software therefore every time you load up itv player you get two ads then the tv crashes, then you are not able to use any other app until you reset the TV at the wall. The first Samsung I returned was a lot worse with a delayed reaction and the crashing whereas the second one had the speed but just crashed when in smart. Tesco helpline and Samsung helpline are aware of the poor stability of the smart function and admit they have had issues since the launch and trying to get licences since 2014!!! Another problem is Samsung run on its own platform (not android like others) so the support is a lot less. If you are not fussed about smart or plugging into sky or Virgin then the smart feature becomes a moot point and the TV is great. Hope this helps.

I had the same choice a few months ago and plumped for the Samsung.
Historically a Sony person, however this Samsung is massively impressive and I am not surprised by all of the awards it won.
At the time it was a no brainer, as the Android TV was beyond a joke on the Sony.
Some points to note:
Samsung Pro's
. More vibrant picture
. Impressive sound from the standard speaker (above average)
. Voice controlled remote included in the pack
. The menus are rapid, no delay as with most Sony products
Samsung Negatives
. This would be perfect if a 43"
. The depth is less sleek than the Sony
. The stand is wider and deeper than the Sony, so if you have a small area to put it on...
Sony Pro's
. Better aesthetics
. More of a studio quality screen - i.e more natural but it does feel dull next to the Samsung
Sony Negatives
. Sound is worse
. Screen (see above)
. Android TV did have very poor reviews but I understand they have improved this and added some of the promised channels

I recently swapped my KDL-50W805C (essentially the 50" version of this one) for a 48H6400 (48" version of the Samsung you're looking at). The Samsung is clearly an older model; the design and the stand look a little odd compared to the very thin bezels and low profile stands of the 2015/16 models but it still looks decent enough. Picture quality is excellent, and having had two of the Sonys the panel on the Samsung is better quality.
The smart features and interface are a bit clunky on the Samsung and while it has a lot of apps available, some of them do seem a bit behind. Spotify's is fairly basic for example, but it works fine and it's nice to have it whereas the Sony's Android TV didn't at all. That being said, it's fairly straightforward and easy to use and it's far less unacceptable to performance issues than the Sony was and I haven't had it crash, freeze or need to restart since I've had it (albeit that's five days) which is more than could be said for the Sony. Android TV has some potential but the lack of apps and the poor implementation of it by Sony on their models totally ruined the experience for me. Also worth bearing in mind that a number of the apps (iPlayer, Amazon Instant, 4OD etc) aren't even Android apps so they're a bit clunky and slow and you're less likely to get timely updates.
The Samsung comes with 3D glasses as well as a 'smart' remote in addition to the regular one, so you do get some nice extras at least.
I wish the Sony had been better than it was because it was the ideal TV for me but after going through two of them I wasn't keen on trying my luck a third time. The Samsung feels like a bit of a downgrade in some respects (I miss the Cast feature, although a cheap Chromecast will sort that), but it's a great TV and it's exhibited absolutely no software or hardware issues or niggles so far which is more than can be said for the Sonys I had in the same timeframe.
Edit: Just seen the post a few above this one regarding these two models and I agree with all points. The speakers are surprisingly adequate (certainly better than the Sony had), although a soundbar should still be a mandatory purchase these days.

I spent the weekend mulling over this Sony and a Panasonic in the same price bracket. I went to Curry's to have a look and ended up going with the Samsung.
The Samsung had the most uniform picture and seemed to have better contrast. As has been mentioned, Sony and Panasonic have more neutral panels which is down to personal preference.
The kicker for me was how the 4k TV's dealt with anything under 1080p. I saw artifacts, clouding and wishy washy edges.
If your priority Is a good picture from a variety of sources I'd steer clear of a 4k set unless you're doubling your budget.

So tempted to jump for one of these TV deals but my 5 year old Sony KDL40W5500 is still going strong and has a fantastic picture. Only thing really is the depth of the set and width of the bezel really dates it.
Would I see an improvement in PQ with one of these new sets?
I dont use it for gaming, not really too interested in Android (unless it can run Now TV), I pretty much just use a TV as, erm, a TV...
Picture quality is important to me though, and I do watch HD content both through VM and Bluray...
Would the general advice be to keep what I have got while it is still working and only change when I have to or would I see a significant improvement in picture quality going for something like this?
Also not particularly bothered by 4K, I think it will be a LONG time before 4K is broadcast even as much as HD is today...

The Samsung H6400 is one of very few models fitted with only a Samsung panel whilst other Samsung models may have a choice of four panels and some models don't even list a Samsung panel, hence maybe the improved picture quality on the H6400. That could be a reason why it won the awards. The Sony on the other hand is rumoured to have an AU Optronics VA panel in the 50".

That's not true about LCD/LED. I have an LG with an AU-Optronics A-MVA panel. Viewing angles are excellent. Rumour has it they fit the same panel in the Sony 50", it's not a Sony panel. Just because it's Sony doesn't mean it has a Sony panel, but who knows what panels is in the 43". It could be a TN panel. Both A-MVA and IPS panels give excellent side viewing angles with minimal loss of contrast.

Hi do you still have the Firestick? Is it able to cast offline / downloaded shows on Amazon Prime to this TV? (the dedicated Amazon app on the TV can obviously stream but just wanting to know whether there's a way to cast downloaded Amazon shows from the phone / tablet to this TV).
I bought the 43" and love it. The picture quality is sharp and better than some 4K tv's I've seen (once you factor in refresh rates, contrast ratios etc). With the average consumer going nuts over 4K, you actually forget how sharp 1080p can actually be (particularly on a screen this size). Actors must hate HD as it highlights every hair, wrinkle, pimple etc.
In terms of Smart TV capabilities - it's the works. It covers Google Play, Amazon Instant and Netflix. The only product it doesn't cater for is Apple - so an Apple TV would be handy if you've committed to Apple TV shows / films. But I have a MK1 Chromecast and aside from using my phone to select content, it's pretty redundant as all of those apps are on the TV itself. I've not had any Android TV issues so far. Did an upgrade first thing. Running great.
The only thing I'd like to know is whether I can cast downloaded Amazon content somehow.
PS: I'm so impressed with this TV that I'm now looking for the 55" version (either in 2D or 3D - whichever is cheaper) for another room.

No problems for me with it and the latest update seems to have fixed a large number of so called early issues. Open ES on the phone look for the apps and press until it has a 'Tick' then press the '3 dots' on the top right and press 'Send' and select 'Bravia 2015' (ES also has to be open on TV) then just install on TV. I struggled at first then got the hang of it and its fast. TV SideView app on mobile is useful as it has mouse and keyboard

I bought the 43" 807C in a Sony Centre in December - cannot fault it. Certainly haven't seen any bugs mentioned above. And 3D is v impressive.

It's an android TV O/S. Go to the google play store on the tele and search for the Kodi app and install it. The only thing I have set up is Netflix and Amazon instant video. Kodi I use to play my dvds, music, photos. I found casting 4K and 1080p videos a bit jitttery from my phone but that is probably the network or converting down to 1080p. I have casted Spotify to the TV and works well.

Oh no, this is the same move I'm making with mine, expecting delivery of mine tomorrow and it's replacing a 43" Pioneer Plasma. Is there a decent market for selling these - don't want to just cast it aside but i'm getting little or no response on Gumtree!

I have the non-3D version of this. Good picture quality and case/stand are nice. There's a lot of noise out there about Android T. My experience has been that it's not as bad as I've heard, but will need restarting (turn off at mains) about once a week to keep it running smoothly. There's a software update due in March that is supposed to fix things and Sony have stated that all 2015 TVs should get an update to Android 6.0 at some point. I find that mine runs a lot better with YouView disabled. The only issue that really bugs me is occasional loss of lip sync on the HD channels - the sound lags the picture and there is no setting for this on the TV, so am hoping the software update fixes this. A good buy at this price - the Tesco deal was unbelievable.

Samsung 3D glasses work, as long as they are bluetooth, think Argos or Currys sell a twin pack for around £30, the Samsung ones work fine on my Sony TV

I just took delivery of the KDL50W807C from the Tesco offer last week. Whilst the picture quality is good 'head on', the viewing angle is extremely narrow. Beyond about 30 degrees either side the contrast really starts to drop off. I guess I was spoilt with my electricity guzzling plasma.

Yes, you and I - we both were. Plasma were excellent at any angles not LCD/LED. But, that is the way the world is going these days.
Opening post

Other than that it's a great TV.
Glasses work perfect high five thank you , you have saved me a fortune.
Incidentally, the Amazon app on the Sony isn't running in Android, same as most of the other UK terrestrial catch-up apps on it.
Looked online for a retailer that sells them can not find one
Sony have them for £49
I take it next Ford will be selling cars with no steering wheels because this is how useless a 3d television is with no 3d glasses very disappointed

I had my Sony W805 update last night - just fixes a few stability issues (none of them experienced by my set!) and remote control issues re speed of response etc
I have an old 40" Sony (3 years) and the picture is fantastic.
I can't see any new features :disappointed:
Voted cold.
It is a fantastic TV, straight out of the box the picture quality is great.
Updated the software on it, and the Android operating system appears to be slick and quick. And steady..had read reviews saying it was rubbish but no sign of this so far.
Buy with confidence.
I just checked on the Tesco site and it says 399 Pounds. May i know the link from where you purchased for 330 pounds?
Cheers

Samsung pros:- Slightly better picture
Almost instant start-up, whereas you have to wait 60 seconds before you can watch anything on Sony
Excellent smart (I don't have any trouble with ITV catch up)
Will play flv from a usb stick
Input sockets much more easily accessible
TV will swivel on stand
Con:- Occasional judder. Have not noticed any on Sony even with motionflow switched off
Smaller screen obviously
Thanks.

Can someone recommend a deal on a Sony TV (40"-43") without the smart features?
AV Picture settings
No problems for me with it and the latest update seems to have fixed a large number of so called early issues. I guess it was just noobs who paid £900+ when it first came out feeling short changed and wanted to moan about something. For £399 it is a fantastic bit of kit for the money. Shame the manual it comes with is crap and to get the best picture settings you need to hunt around on the net.
P.S. if you have amazon student account + prime they are also selling it for £399.99 with prime next day delivery and then 5% off... but ofcourse you dont get your 6year warranty
You should see it from the front
