It's Thermal Inkjet technology, not a thermal printer.
Most consumer inkjet printers, including those from Canon, Hewlett-Packard, and Lexmark, use the thermal inkjet process. In the thermal inkjet process, the print cartridges consist of a series of tiny chambers, each containing a heater, all of which are constructed by photolithography. To eject a droplet from each chamber, a pulse of current is passed through the heating element causing a rapid vaporization of the ink in the chamber and forming a bubble, which causes a large pressure increase, propelling a droplet of ink onto the paper (hence Canon's trade name of Bubble Jet).

I've got a second-hand printer HP printer and am running out of ink, just wondering if it might be cheaper to buy this new one as it comes with ink as well, rather than just getting replacement ink for the printer that I have got.

I'd say for the last 15 years, maybe more, theres been various printers that have been around this price, and cheaper than the "genuine" inks needed to refill them.

I thought thermal printers didn't use ink cartridges, like my Brother Label printer doesn't....maybe Im confused, or maybe the description given is a little wrong/misleading
