anyone know of an easy way to use a controller with these games without spending a shift remapping the controls. have looked a few times with no luck but now recently.

Yes, there's a mod called GInput that enables XInput (standard controller input used by Xbox 360/One and DS3/4 pads) in these games. You can get it here - http://www.gtagarage.com/mods/show.php?id=24272
It's just a case of download, extract the zip, copy the files over to the right places (as per instructions) and play. You can change settings but you shouldn't need to as there's a separate mod for each game so they're pre-calibrated.
FYI - there's a community hub for each game on Steam where you can look for help with this sort of thing (usually in the guides section). Just right click on the game in your Steam library and select 'Community Hub', or you can get to it through the store page.

When I tried using that the analogue sticks wouldn't work, gave up in the end.
