You are meant to downgrade like I did, Version 1 of GTA San Andreas has mod support plus a frame rate remover so it runs at 60fps rather than the 30fps the default versions are (3 and VC have 60fps mods too that is just a case of open exe and select framerate you want)

I use a PS2 pad connected to a USB convertor and only problems I have with all of them is the prompts showing JOY1 etc.

I'd recommend playing GTA 3, vice city and San Andreas in any order before playing 4 and 5. there's no real continuous story or anything but in terms of gameplay, if you start with GTA 5 and work backwards you will notice all the limitations in GTA 3 like not being able to swim, no helicopters etc whereas if you play it first you won't notice it. Besides I'd argue that vice city and San Andreas are probably the pick of the bunch, just need a sale on Ps store now :smile:

anyone know of an easy way to use a controller with these games without spending a shift remapping the controls. have looked a few times with no luck but now recently.

Have you tried it recently? i.e. within the last year, as it was regularly updated until March last year, when the latest release is dated. And did you try any of the alternate control mappings? There are 5 for Vice City, although I should think all would use the analogue sticks. It worked fine for me straight after installation, although I then changed it to Setup 5, which is GTA IV controls, so that I could use the right trigger for acceleration as I'm more used to that these days. The right analogue stick doesn't seem to do much in this game at the best of times (camera in car is controlled by shoulder buttons even with GTA IV controls



Ah yes, unfortunately San Andreas isn't as simple as the other two. The problem is that, just over a year ago, San Andreas was removed from the Steam store due to music licensing issues. When it returned, it was an updated version, removing the songs they couldn't get renewed licenses for, but it also added native support for Xbox 360 controllers. However this also broke the mod (the Readme included with the mod says '3.0 AND NEWSTEAM R2 SUPPORT ARE TO APPEAR AT A LATER POINT' so I guess they just haven't gotten around to it yet).
So when you see it telling you to 'Press JOY2', etc., that's not the mod talking, that's the game's native controller support. The control scheme is the same as the original PS2/Xbox version, so it's easy enough to figure out once you've spent a few minutes with it, but if you want to use GInput your options are 1) wait for it to be updated (however long that might be!) or 2) downgrade your version of San Andreas to how it was pre-update using this downgrader and then use the mod with that version. You should also install the Silent Patch on top of that to fix lots of things that the updates fixed without actually updating the game - and don't forget that, as it says in the instructions for the Silent Patch and GInput, you'll also need to use this ASI loader for those mods to load. You will then have proper controller icons displayed like this (just took this screenshot from my installation) -


So, full instructions -
GTA III - Install from Steam. Download GInput .zip file for GTAIII. Copy/paste files to install folder. Play. (The Readme says you should change the control scheme to Classic - I didn't find that necessary but try it if you have problems.)
Vice City - Install from Steam. Download GInput .zip file for VC. Copy/paste files to install folder. Play.
San Andreas - Install from Steam. Download downgrader and run it to get to v1.0. Download ASI Loader, Silent Patch and GInput for SA. Copy/paste files for each one, individually in that order, to install folder. Play!

I found GInput great for III and Vice City, but could not get it working for San Andreas, seemed like a common fault. You can still use the controller, but the buttons are quite different to the other two games and they're all numbered (as opposed to A, B, X, Y it's 1, 2, 3 up to 13).

Vice City, with both my wired & wireless 360 pads. IIRC San Andreas was fine though.

Which game and which controller? Worked instantly for me on all 3 games with a X360 controller.

Haven't played any GTA, should I start with GTA III or IV? Waiting for GTA V to hit £5 mark...
