I see you read the propaganda papers. Actually, you should be campaigning for the price increase on fuel in general. Petrol and Diesel are as bad as each other, neither being better than the other and it depends what benchmark you use to work out which is most dangerous. Just to give a snippet;

Carbon monoxide - Diesel performs better for lower emissions of this

Hydrocarbons - Diesel performs better for lower emissions of these

Nitrogen Oxides - Both fuel types are about as bad as each other here

Particulate matter - Diesels rule the roost for this (and it's particularly what the headlines are about)

Carbon dioxide - Petrol is slightly worse for this

* amusingly depending on who's report you read on the subject gives varying results and that's partly due to lobbying, individual agendas and so forth. However, all the reports I've ever seen certainly don't make diesel or petrol the king of the fuels, this is just an extract from one such report into the subject. I'm sure you can easily find a report that says diesel or petrol is the devils fuel and to use the other one.

As you can see neither is a slam dunk in terms of winning an "I'm better than you" race. Carbon monoxide is a greenhouse gas and highly poisonous, hydrocarbon are a cause of smog and linked to various illnesses, Nitrogen oxides are a key contributing factor to smog and acid rain, particulate matter causes smog and linked to various illnesses as well, carbon dioxide as we all know is a greenhouse gas. At the end of the day my comment was not for you but an observation for others that grade of fuel even from the same company overall does make a difference. I managed to fill up at Costco Liverpool for 98.9 on "Unleaded" and I noticed it was 97.9 on "Premium Diesel". I think Super Unleaded was 101.9 (can't be sure). This only really makes any sense if you're a member already and use it regularly in conjunction with their Execituve Card. Overall, Costco is the cheapest I've seen to date and they are generally a couple of pence cheaper than the supermarkets (they also respond to price changes in the market much quicker too). Note: Not all Costco's have a petrol station so check before you sign up for a membership sub.

Not entirely sure it can be called "a sensible price"......it's cheaper than it was, but at £4.50 a gallon, its far from sensible compared to what most other western countries pay.

Petrol & Diesel at Sainsbury's is 99.9p, both at Waitrose 200 yards away are 103.9p.
But there are still queues at Waitrose ... people are just strange...

Also if you go to a Shell petrol station, a Morrison's, Tesco, a BP, a Texaco, etc - you could be filling with EXACTLY the same fuel as all stations use whatever supplies they can get - so could be any providers fuel in any station's tanks. Can be Esso petrol you're getting at a BP station.

I generally fill up with fuel from ASDA, but once a quarter year I draw a full tank of Shell V Power to clean the innards. It seems to be a fair balance.

Just had a look on PETROLPRICES.COM and the price of Diesel is 99.7 absolutely everywhere I looked.
This is the first time I have ever seen this!

cold from me - Asda have been selling at 99.7p for over 2 weeks in Waterlooville. Sainsburys and Morrisons followed suit at 99.9p not long after. Still happy it is happening after paying £1.30 which was a disgrace.

1. I don't know about modern diesels, not had one for years but older engines did need glowplugs to start, turn the key, wait for the light to go out then fire it up, I imagine that process is built into the engine now?
2.it looks like he was saying diesels need to warm the turbos, not sure on that one.
3.revving higher means a car needs less displacement for a higher bhp, so for the same displacement a petrol car will achieve a higher BHP.
4.I'm sure he meant some diesels sound terrible, having operated knijpstra trailers and tractors in a previous life I can honestly say I've heard diesels that sound like a John deere.
5.it is extremely costly, messy and takes alot of work to convert a diesel engine to work on veg oil, the 1000-2000 filter changes, extra tank, sensors, fuel lines, having to purge the veg oil before it solidifies, New fuel pumps, and reworking the sensors and electrical systems on modern engines means it does work but you need to be doing a lot of mileage for it to be cost effective.

1. My engine will start straight away, and does not need "heaters to warm the cylinders". I think you are referring to "Glow plugs" which help to ignite the fuel as startup.
However, my diesel does not need spark plugs to ignite EVERY power stroke a piston makes!
2. A diesel does not NEED a turbo. Just like many "Turbo'd" petrol engines don't.
3. Please explain the benefit of "reving higher". As my diesel can travel at 130 MPH as it is, I have no need to "rev higher".
4. Having operated "tractors" all my working life I don't even think you know what one sounds like and you certainly don't know what a diesel car sounds like.
5. The diesel engine WAS designed to run on vegetable oil. Peanut oil, I believe.

99.9 for petrol at Tesco, 99.7 for diesel as promised, heat added.

Speaking as someone who has a family member who works for Esso, there is no difference in the base fuel. The only difference between fuel delivered to the offshoots is the chemical mix added to it (detergents, lead replacement, octane or cetane boosting additives, etc).

It's not exactly a secret, most people have known this for years...

It's not an exact science and varies depending on efficiency of equipment, the source of the crude oil in the first place, impurities and so fort. The but roughly you get from a single barrel are below, it's not an exact science to pull a single set of numbers so here's three.

42% Petrol
22% Diesel
9% Jet Fuel
5% Fuel Oil
4% Liquefied Petroleum Gases
18% Other products




You're welcome to suggest a use for all that Diesel.

Diesel has more energy but it's not refined like a naturally aspirated petrol engine. Petrol engines don't need heaters to warm the cylinder's, turbos, particle filters and are heavier requiring more material to make. Petrols rev higher too nor do they sound like a tractor. I've only ever come across one OK diesel engine and that was in a Honda Accord. All others need refinement.
Why don't they make diesel engines to run specifically on veg oil and leave the crude oil for petrol.

A. Mine doesn't produce black smoke and if it did, I'd have it fixed asap.
B. If petrol engines ARE more refined, how come my 2.2 liter diesel can go 50% farther than a 2.2 liter petrol engine on the same amount of fuel?
Oh and if you conk out with no petrol stations near, can you just lob in a couple of liters of cooking oil, to get yo to a garage?

I formed my own opinion based on a) the smell of all diesels bar a small minority of new ones b) the black smoke all of them produce c) petrol engines are more refined.

​No, i think the giveaway is that fuel comes from a refinery. What usually happens at refineries is different grades of a certain product are produced. sort of comparable to a distillery, cheap stuff is syphoned off early and the good stuff comes after.

I used to always buy bp ultimate diesel for my 320d. Apparently the additives clean your fuel injectors and after about 3 consecutive fill ups you do notice a difference; reduced exhaust smoke, very slightly quicker acceleration and I'd get about 58mpg as opposed to 53 doing similar runs. It wasn't really worth the extra money for me so I've gone back to supermarket diesel now. Apparently the sportier the engine the more difference it makes so paying the extra might be worth it for some car fanatics.

Adding heat because it's cheapest it's been for a while. Not really hot hot yet though imo until uk gets in line with the rest of Europe, or even better, the US!

unfortunately I need the super diesel for the navara or it drives like Poo!

So Asda and Tesco made the decision but rest will follow a day or 2 after, to make extra profits . Happened last month. Mines still over half since then because of School hols.

ok, how big is your tank? say 10 gallons on a little hatchback, that's an extra 5 miles per gallon difference, which could easily be attributed to weather conditions, tiem of year where your cars brain extra fuels on idle etc, traffic conditions, what you're lugging around in your car, the roads you use, tyre pressure, the newness of tyres, wether youve drove the same distance with windows up or down etc, how nes air finters are etc etc etc

but of course its the fuel that makes that extra 5mpg *facepalm*

no they don't, standard diesel is only produces in 2 grades, the second of which is what is generally available at the forecourt because it's less volatile, and gives slightly better fuel econpmy, its the same stuff that gets sent to every forecourt that comes from the refinery that services your area on any given day, the only thing that is different between forecourt deliveries are the additives, which (debatably) makes the end product marginally more fuel efficient.

its the same sh*t whether you buy from tesco or shell, they don't have their own refineries, they don't source different oil, they don't have different processes in the refining, the diesel is produced between a small range of temperatures, and there's very little difference between oils from differing areas, the base product is exactly the same, whichever brand you choose to use, the only thing that is different is a few 'additives' which makes marginally more miles per gallon, but when you take in to account the extra cost, its a negligible saving in the pence per mile, you're talking fractions of a penny

You are right, spot on but you don't get that they sell half the time the lower grade viscosity product. It's why I strongly recommend going to a mini tesco express service station as they are linked with Aesop but use a higher grade than there own supermarket.

It is pennies at the end of the day but at the end of the year it makes a difference. Try looking at your fuel economy after 6 months of supermarket only, the 6 months of tesco-esso or other brand. I did this and notice an average difference of about 50miles extra on a full tank

99p is better than we have had for as long as I can remember, but France already pay 75p, Spain pay 78p the EU average is 83p which we has the highest paying nation are bringing up
