At the moment i have about 60 watches in my collection, including 3 CW and 10+ seiko's, ranging from a vintage Pogue through Prospex right down to staight up 7002 auto beaters so i am not "talking the talk" - i am talking about a topic that i consider to have some knowledge about, in stark contrast to your comments to date.

The watch industry regards CW as an entry level luxury product that offers outstanding value. This consensus is also prevalent among most (exclude Archie Luxury as he is certifiably nuts) experts and customers that have owned a CW product. They even have the strap line "the worlds most affordable luxury watches".

To assert they are overpriced is flat out wrong.

The Rhonda movement used here is extremely accurate, robust and proven performer and is often fitted in watches that are considerably more expensive. In most cases, short of some extremely rare complications (Tourbillon etc..) only a very small proportion of the cost of any watch is made up by the movement. Most automatic watches that the general public consider "expensive" normally contain a bog standard ETA 2824-2.

You pay for the fit, finish and brand on the watch. Mainly the brand.

For £100 this watch will be vastly superior to its Seiko counterpart, that is not an opinion its a fact. Hold a £100 Seiko sideways and admire the strap sag and hair plucking linkages - you will probably have mineral glass or if your lucky "hardlex" (Seiko's owe value proposition). You certainly will not have a decent anti-reflective Sapphire crystal.

I am a massive Seiko fan but your suggestion that at this price point it is comparable to the C5 is also flat out wrong. Also this is a dress watch and despite their multiple attempts Seiko have not successfully cracked the dress watch market, short of the Grand seiko price point. They are very much a rugged sport / utility brand.

Anyone who has any remote interest in watches will have heard of Christopher Ward. At this price it's good value. Much better than the equivalent Argos Seiko/Citizen.

Iv got 4 different Christopher ward watches. never had a problem with any of them, all have 5 year warranty. and customer service that IMO is second to none. Friend just bought one of these and it looks stunning in person.
And try talking to citizen or Seiko if you need any help or advice.

In my life I have owned many high end watches, I personally would not buy from argos. You seem to talk the talk so tell me why this quartz watch is superior to another brand? Perhaps its the 50 meter water resistance or the genuine leather strap, or perhaps the eta auto movement. Oh I forgot its got a ronda quartz movement, lol

I actually like the tridente range, would bite if they had the right one at half price. A always miss the 42mm version on the bracelet though. Is that a climb down i sense? :P

You can pick up a decent C60 for around £300 in the clearance that happens once a year. I have a black on stainless and it is great. Looks a lot like an Omega Seamaster but without the tears when you scratch / smash it. Gets some nice comments too. Avoid the small one, 42mm is the way to go.

No, I am not biased against anything. Just strikes me as nothing special on that watch for the money. I looked after xmas on their sale but no Tridente 42mm Black dialled on bracelet, Talking watches, Have you seen the re issue of the seiko 6309 turtle, looks nice but not available many places yet. "You pay for the fit, finish and brand on the watch. Mainly the brand."

And, regardless of the long winded and boring brag about owning "60" watches, that is exactly why this is an overpriced item.

As an owner of over 60 pairs of socks, including ones with Family Guy, Simpsons and even the new Star Wars characters, I recommend wearing this enchanting timepiece with the Levis you bought from Sports Direct.

I really dislike the "Chr." part of the logo. It's not any kind of normal abbreviation and the lack of a vowel makes it not really pronounceable. I don't understand, it's supposed to be a quality brand so write it in full or not at all.

All joking aside these are well finished pieces. I know it's only a quartz (generally not my bag) but I would say it looks better on the wrist than in the pics. Having owned six differing CW auto models alongside Tudor and Tags a number of vintage seikos I would say give it a go you won't be disappointed. I like the fact that not many people recognise the brand but those that do really appreciate.

It doesn't impress me at all.

If you are looking for something a wee bit unusual, these appeal to me:

http://sklep.gerlach.org.pl/index.php?route=common/home

And this quartz hybrid is nice - but with watches it's each to his own.

http://sklep.gerlach.org.pl/index.php?route=product/category&path=81

And you can often get 7 zlotys for £1 so very affordable. Yes, they use Seagull movements as well as Seiko, but they're something a little different.

Are swatch still Swiss made ? I was told that omega own them ?
___Josh____
22 Jan 16 #51
Swatch group own omega and and swatch they are a Swiss company as far as I know, I don't know if the watches are Swiss made never bought one.
Tyranicus66
22 Jan 16 #52
Swatch are the industry monster.

They own Breguet, Harry Winston, Blancpain, Glashütte Original, Jaquet Droz, Léon Hatot, Omega, Longines, Rado, Union Glashütte, Tissot, Balmain, Certina, Mido, Hamilton, Calvin Klein watches + jewelry, Swatch, Flik Flak. That's a bit of shameless copy paste but it stopped me missing any. They also own a host of production companies like ETA that make the watch parts themselves

The price point of any specific watch and brand will determine if it is actually Swiss made. Check the dial!
Gaspode
22 Jan 16 #53
According to their website, swatch currently own: Breguet, Harry Winston, Blancpain, Glashütte Original, Jaquet Droz, Léon Hatot, Omega, Longines, Rado, Union Glashütte, Tissot, Balmain, Certina, Mido, Hamilton, Calvin Klein watches + jewelry, Swatch, & Flik Flak, so a significant chunk of the watch industry - and they also own a number of the production companies including ETA who are one of the largest manufacturers of watch movements.

As far as this deal goes, there is a huge amount of inverse snobbery being spouted on here - of course you pay for the name, the style, the warranty, the fit and finish, so picking purely on the movement as a reason why this watch is supposed to be a bad deal is ridiculous - if you take that view, how do Tag Heuer manage to sell watches with $25 quartz movements for over £1000? It's a deal (the point of this site), because it's on offer for half the normal price (and as Ward sell directly then there aren't many chances to buy at a serious discount) - if you don't like the watch or won't pay that amount for a quartz watch then fine, move on to the next deal for a Casio or a cheap swatch or whatever else floats your boat, but it might be better to keep your predjuces to yourself rather than publish them on here.....
___Josh____ to Gaspode
22 Jan 16 #55
I hope you don't think I am calling this a bad deal or using the quartz movement as a reason for this being a bad deal, I am just saying its a bog standard movement. The description states swiss made with a decent movement as I don't even know the brand I thought this might be an interesting deal to me turns out I don't like the watch style, brand or movement so, if I think this watch is overpriced in the first place and then gets dropped to half price I should vote Hot because someone else might disagree with me and think it was a reasonable price in the first place? That isn't how it works I voted cold because to me it is cold that is how it works.

Still not a bad deal if it appeals to you.

I am far from a watch snob because I voted cold though, I own 2 Armani watches that both have bog stand quartz movements and a £5.99 casio for the gym, far from a snob.

p.s. sorry if my massive sentences are hard to read lol.
Gaspode
22 Jan 16 1 #54
sorry Tyranicus66 - you beat me to it....

One point regarding the use of 'swiss' on the dial is that a number of manufacturers are a little 'lose' with the concept of where the watches are made - Rotary for example (who have a long and proud history - but have gone downmarket over the past few years) use their swiss heritage on their dials (i.e. 'Est Switzerland') for watches that are made in the far East whereas very few of their watches are actually now made in Switzerland - 'swiss made' should be a guarantee, but the high quality of some of the Japanese (and increasingly Chinese) manufacturers means that it's not always that simple (i.e. even the swiss watch industry produces cheap junk nowadays....)
Bendown
23 Jan 16 #56
I recently sold my Omega seamaster quartz, part of the swatch group. The movement in that was a plastic movement, I was surprised that a watch costing over a thousand quid would have what appears to be a cheap movement, however it did. There is a lot of snobbery with watches, I like value now a days. You can keep the over priced "look at me I have a Roolex-Omeeega type brands"
