Yes - you will need a powered sub. Most speaker packages will come with one.

Yes, this is by design. Most AV amps require powered subs. Not sure on speaker packages at that price though

no need to go full 5.1. I own a 477 with a pair of standmount speakers. it can autoconfigure itself and compensate for speakers and room, it does it with its own microphone
