There's a contradiction here. You ask why the parts are so expensive, but then claim to know there is no reason for them to be. So, what was your point?

Holy macaroni. I paid £75 for a whole bike with 27 gears and free mud flaps.

No idea if not or not. But why are bikes parts so god damn expensive? There is no reason for them to be.

Is it that hard to understand? This is very high end equipment. Like with a lot of other consumer products that retailer sells products vary wildly in price quality and branding. Top spec manufacturer and top spec model is going to bring a high cost. Goes for most things you have in your household. White goods, electronics, furniture, whatever it may be there is always someone with the disposable income and mindset that considers it a worthwhile position regardless of what other people make of it

Kind of get you but it can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. Like anything I guess. Most hobbies are expensive

Because it seems to be very easy to separate a cyclist from his money (in many cases). It's an addictive hobby - but I'm trying to resist!
Like all technical kit it's a law of diminishing returns - by the time you get to the top end you pay a lot more for a relatively small improvement. No doubt the profit margin for manufacturer/retailer is bigger too.

They aren't.
I just bought two branded decent enough quality Shimano nine speed cassettes for £12 each delivered.
Of course, if you go for top spec brand new technology parts they've spent hundreds of man hours shaving every last possibly milligram off, they will be.
If you want a bike to get/stay fit, go from A to B or have some fun on, there's no need to spend silly amounts

These are very high quality parts which make a world of difference on any good road bike, quicker gear change, awsome brake power and a significant weight difference which makes a climbing long hills easier. absolute bargain to any road bike racer

Good price but limited to 172.5 crank length and a 50/34 crank which won't suit everyone.

safe to say it will suit the majority though

Worth noting that it doesn't come with new cables and outers - so at the very least you'll also want to order brake and gear inner cables.

No need for new inners, and you can reuse outers if they're in good condition.
