I know, this may not be everyone's cup of tea but if you are looking to get started with surround sound than this could be the place to start.
I know, I will get pilloried for posting this but hey at least its good value :)

Anyone critical of this is being silly. As an introductory set to use with an inexpensive receiver, its great value any way you slice it

I got two of these the last time they were on offer to replace some ageing Denon surrounds hooked up to my Pioneer 922 receiver - at the volume we listen at they're just as good as the Denons, but as I've bolted the two rears to a shared wall I've not tried cranking it up too far

No, these are speakers - you need an amp to drive them.

Never having used any add on speakers before....do these need an amp or to run off a blu ray player or can they hook up directly to the tv?
Okay, just read and you need a blu ray :disappointed:

You'd need a receiver to drive these, plus a subwoofer as they're not designed to handle sounds down in the weeds (there used to be a matching sub to these, not sure if it's still available).
