I know, this may not be everyone's cup of tea but if you are looking to get started with surround sound than this could be the place to start.
I know, I will get pilloried for posting this but hey at least its good value :)

Anyone critical of this is being silly. As an introductory set to use with an inexpensive receiver, its great value any way you slice it

I got two of these the last time they were on offer to replace some ageing Denon surrounds hooked up to my Pioneer 922 receiver - at the volume we listen at they're just as good as the Denons, but as I've bolted the two rears to a shared wall I've not tried cranking it up too far

No, these are speakers - you need an amp to drive them.

Never having used any add on speakers before....do these need an amp or to run off a blu ray player or can they hook up directly to the tv?
Okay, just read and you need a blu ray :disappointed:

You'd need a receiver to drive these, plus a subwoofer as they're not designed to handle sounds down in the weeds (there used to be a matching sub to these, not sure if it's still available).
Amazing deal tbh. Probably not the best in the world but for that money, great!

You plug them into an A/V Receiver.

I have these in my living room with a Sony receiver and a 7.2 set up. They are entry level speakers, but for the volume that I watch TV and movies at they are perfect.
They look and feel like a more expensive product and sound better than you'd expect.
These won't be my long term speakers, but I am very happy with them.

Which Sony receiver do you have?

Tempted but the modern day a/v receivers are just too tall to fit inbetween the shelves on my tv stand.

Modern day TV stands are too narrow to fit an av receiver more like.

I got a set of these about a year ago when they were a similar price. I had previously hunted around for some half decent speakers and you literally couldnt find anything below like £100, even tatty 2nd hand ones on eBay were about £30, so I jumped at these.
I have a modest surround system, but I'm not exactly an audiophile. I have a Onkyo SR333 (about £130), the SSL100 speakers and a Yamaha bass (£5 from Gumtree!) but it sounds pretty good to me, it gets pretty loud and doesnt distort. I'm sure you can get much better speakers if you pay more, so if you've got £1000's to spend then buy some better speakers, but you want a good set of speakers on a budget then get these. You wont get better for £20, trust me.

Yes, it's included in the box though (quite a decent amount).

Coupled with the £5 pioneer sub this £25 set (not including av) is the perfect bedroom speaker set or a small living room.

I've reserved some locally, hope they aren't too heavy/bulky to carry on the train home!

Not too heavy but the boxes are quite bulky. Depends how tall you are I guess and how close to the train station. Got to think about carrying them and being able to see the path ahead over the top of them.

I bought the 1050 a couple of months ago, plus a set of these and two of the subs when they were last posted, pairing the 1050 with my pre-existing tower speakers for the living room and my old Kenwood amp with these speakers and subs for the bedroom.

Anyone recommend a fairly decent but fairly cheap receiver to use for this to get surround sound from PS4? Certainly not looking for the best, just basic surround sound

I'm no expert, but bought the entry level Onkyo receiver/speaker set a couple of years back and I've always been perfectly happy with the performance for gaming in a small living room.

Buy something used off ebay, you get some monster receivers in 70-180 mark

Any of the lower end Yamaha amps are great. Similar to the higher end ones in terms of sound but just less feature packed.
I wanted the 1050, but the 1040 has 8 HDMI inputs which was a must for my living room as I needed 7 inputs.

These are decent. For £20 I can't complain. I did go with a better sub that the packaged one.
I'm not an audiophile though & I ended up buying a mid range yamaha receiver for it because it was a bargain at the time.

£20. Not much to say but a good deal. I wouldn't buy a passive subwoofer for these but that's up to you. Buy an AV around the £200 mark and you should have a fairly decent entry level sound system. Eventually you might want to upgrade to something better, at that time you'll have more of an idea of what to do and what you like., feature and sound wise.

I need to replace my old surround Bluray system (the bluray drive has stopped working) and have been looking at this for a while at £249: YAMAHA
YHT1810
This comes with speakers and sub. Would this be a better deal than the speaker set posted here, plus a sub and separate AV receiver? In other words could I buy these speakers, a sub and AV receiver for a similar output and sound quality as the Yamaha set up, but for less than £249? Or would I just be better off getting the Yamaha set up?
Cheers.

Most likely not. For that budget without going second hand or spending more the Yamaha 5.1 packages are hard to beat.

Much more functionality with an AV. I don't know about the speakers exactly because I haven't heard them but an AV is another league.

Don't forget power output.
Peter9588

Good point but i imagine for most people looking at their first av system or a basic one, power output isn't going to be super critical.
