I did that and it died, but I did the same last year but kept it inside and it survived...
Although it can look pretty dead and they come alive again during Spring and Summer. I've tried a few times and one that was as dry and dead as anything, I never bothered throwing it out and it suddenly just came to life 2 years later and has mostly recovered now.
