People keep selling the HP 4gb sticks on eBay, I got a pulled from nearly new for £16, 8gb is enough for the average home server as the Celerons not really a good VM CPU.

I hadn't realised that these use memory different to the N54L microservers. I had just bought some non EEC DDR3 memory for my N54 and used it's 2GB stick for my N40.
Incredible value and quite versatile.
My N54 is being used as a kodi box with a GT610 card and I'm surprised at how well it performs.

Exact same here... I originally bought the Gen8 to replace it, but it's not quite as suitable to being used as a media playback device (MUCH longer POST times, overly complicated booting from ODD port...)
I went back to the N54L for Kodi and am currently using the Gen8 as a freenas box and it's absolutely perfect for that.

4gb of mem is easily enough if you want to run xpenology or win10/8/7 as a server. xpenology runs flawlessly as a headless plex box. stick it under the stairs or in the Thunder box, no maint needed and low power.

I purchased 8gb ram from Amazon (well flubit) for about £40 giving it 10gb. Have esx on a USB stick and running VMs for mucking around. best bit is that this is cpu upgradable i3 3220t is the cheapest then low power xeons.

where did you get that into as it isn't on the "this works" page at homeservers forums?
I thought it was the E3-1220L but that isn't cheap :disappointed:

iLO isn't even essential as Dell Teamviewer is free for personal use and provides a far more streamlined and lightweight interface for basic management tasks.

I've upgraded mine to a xeon e3-1225v2 (not low power Xeon) and I've been using it for 6 months now - cpu temp has never been above 73C. Love it! Benchmarks faster than my i5 cpu

Is it worth it?, you probably paid over £100 for the cpu.
