People keep selling the HP 4gb sticks on eBay, I got a pulled from nearly new for £16, 8gb is enough for the average home server as the Celerons not really a good VM CPU.

Put it inal a corner somewhere and run it headless.

I hadn't realised that these use memory different to the N54L microservers. I had just bought some non EEC DDR3 memory for my N54 and used it's 2GB stick for my N40.
Incredible value and quite versatile.
My N54 is being used as a kodi box with a GT610 card and I'm surprised at how well it performs.

Exact same here... I originally bought the Gen8 to replace it, but it's not quite as suitable to being used as a media playback device (MUCH longer POST times, overly complicated booting from ODD port...)
I went back to the N54L for Kodi and am currently using the Gen8 as a freenas box and it's absolutely perfect for that.

4gb of mem is easily enough if you want to run xpenology or win10/8/7 as a server. xpenology runs flawlessly as a headless plex box. stick it under the stairs or in the Thunder box, no maint needed and low power.

I purchased 8gb ram from Amazon (well flubit) for about £40 giving it 10gb. Have esx on a USB stick and running VMs for mucking around. best bit is that this is cpu upgradable i3 3220t is the cheapest then low power xeons.

where did you get that into as it isn't on the "this works" page at homeservers forums?
I thought it was the E3-1220L but that isn't cheap :disappointed:

iLO isn't even essential as Dell Teamviewer is free for personal use and provides a far more streamlined and lightweight interface for basic management tasks.

I've upgraded mine to a xeon e3-1225v2 (not low power Xeon) and I've been using it for 6 months now - cpu temp has never been above 73C. Love it! Benchmarks faster than my i5 cpu

Is it worth it?, you probably paid over £100 for the cpu.

ilo displays boot screens too, teamviewer can't. you can use this to access the maintenance mode to do firmware updates or manage raid arrays for example.

Yeah, I was trying to offer an alternative since HP expect you to pay through the nose for an iLO licence once initial setup is complete. Teamviewer isn't an exact replacement though, it only works once Windows is running as you state, and doesn't have any advanced management capabilities. And of course this is on the assumption that the user has chosen to go with Windows, I'd imagine it being quite useless if they'd installed an unsupported OS... I've found it far better to use for Windows-based tinkering and administrating than iLO though - the iLO tablet app for example is pretty dreadful.

Shame it's out of stock. Great little machine. I use Windows RDS for local access which seems to satisfy my needs.
People regularly upgrade to 16gb and sell of there stock 2gb stick, so I picked up someones 2gb for peanuts and with 4gb it's fine. Use it for Plex and as a fancy NAS and it's wicked. These normally bop in and out of stock so just keep your eyes open

Maybe build a game rig and stash it somewhere, and use a Steam Link to play on your TV? Might work

i have one if anyone is interested.
Got caught up in the heat voting frenzy on HUKD back in June/July and bought one and upgraded to 16MB Ram.
It is still sitting in the spare room unused as I realized I had no use for it since I had a 5yr old Synology NAS that is still going strong.

Does anyone know any other retailers with stock around this price?
This machine is highly recommended even if you do not intend to upgrade its CPU. I have bought one in Summer and just added the 16GB of RAM. I am running ESXI with 7 Vm's for generic educational purposes, whose vm-hosts include webservers, vpn servers, freenas servers, minecraft servers, and every other application you can imagine for a server. The Celeron handles it quite well and most importantly the power consumption is ridiculous low.
A side note, if you need an ILO license , and do not wish to resort to piracy, this machine accepts ILO2 licenses that are easily found on ebay. I did try it with an old key I had and worked.

Thanks for your comments about the Gen 8. I expected it to be an improvement for a Kodi box, then again the N54L works great.
All that I did was to add a Turtle Beach USB sound stick to it for SPDIF out and a MCE remote. Also I did install an Intel Gigabit LAN card.

Yeah, I'd say just stick with the N54L for Kodi use - it does the job perfectly.
I added a USB3 card and Pulse8 HDMI-CEC adapter on mine (great for controlling Kodi with your TV's remote)
How come the extra NIC, though?... It has a gigabit connection already, and teamed NICs are surely overkill for a Kodi box?
If you ran into the Windows 8.1/Server 2012 R2 issues which needed the NIC to be disabled, that was resolved with a BIOS update

Just posted up a 4gb stick on F/S pulled from a new T20 if anyone is interested.
Also have a 2Gb too but that is in the Gen8 currently so I dont have pic until later
it wasn't intended as a Kodi box when I first got the LAN card and I found with the onboard NIC it wouldn't give me the sustained 112Mb sec transfer that I get with the Intel card. That was more useful when used as a media server copying large files.
