I presume you just add this to your existing live subscription and it extends it by 12 months, i.e it does not run 12 months from the date you use it thus losing the 2 months I still have to run.

You can buy the code now and download it( take a note of the code of course or print it out) and then you can input it when you give him the xb1 at Christmas. There's not usually an expiry date on these codes.
