Kind of a shallow statement really. I own a bunch of PS devices and even I have to admit how abysmal PSTV is. Such a missed oppurtunity what with external HDD support/micro SD support, anti-aliasing options and a solid compatibility list all being absent. Inexcusable really..

If its anything like using the app on the xperia phones its ok, I guess ultimately it depends on your internet connection and WiFi signal, I've never had any issues playing games like fifa online.

Input lag on any streaming device is likely to be too detrimental for competitive FPS games, if that's what you mean. For example I can stream Halo from my Xbox One to PC and play campaign OK but the slight lag renders the multiplayer practically unplayable. Though I did still manage a positive K/D with a "triple kill", I guess some people are just very bad at Halo

24 Nov 15 #13
I have one and would advise you have a good fibre connection and/or use powerline adapters or a hard wired Ethernet connection from the PSTV to your router. There is still a small bit of lag but the games are very playable with a good setup. Also it is 720p max on a PSTV.
bailey87 to seanandleah

I can confirm that that is the truth. I have a very fast wired connection (76mbps), but cannot play FIFA on pstv as lag / screen blurring makes it impossible
XEntity to seanandleah
24 Nov 15 #61
I've tried this on a wired 100mbit lan connection, it might have even been gigabit at the time, and the lag was too much to drive a car on GTA at slow speed without crashing, I would not recommend this for screen mirroring of your ps4. I've tried multiple things to get this working :-( hot price for playing some vita games (not all work) but I don't think the device itself is worth while!

Your Internet connection has nothing to do with how well the pstv works. Its to do with how the ps4 multilayer works. The pstv is all down to your WiFi router transfer speeds and most are the same nowadays. Not taking interference into account. To get the best possible experience with this make sure your hard wired in rather than WiFi connection (powerline adapters are fine)

I do. I have my PS4 downstairs, connected to a gigabit switch, which is then connected to the BT HUB5(which also has gigabit ports), then I have a cable running upstairs where I have another gigabit switch and the PSTV is connected to that switch. Cat6 cables everywhere. In this setup, the configuration supports full speed at maximum quality(high quality setting + 60fps). It works very well - I use it to play Bloodborne in the bedroom. However - even with this setup playing racing games or fpses is not fantastic. There's a tiny bit of lag and if you want to play CoD multiplayer - forget about it. But for anything else, it's good enough.

Powerlines can have massive burst speed, but they suffer from a lot of random lag(worse than WiFi actually). I used to run remoteplay over 600mbps powerline adapters, and while they were completely fine for internet, remoteplay would break up or lose quality all the time. Only switching to actual ethernet cables everywhere resolved the issue.

bonzobanana
24 Nov 15 #45
I have a pstv already and bear in mind that only a subset of vita games work on the pstv. There is a network media player for the EU region but its not very compatible with files. Not available for download on US accounts. Not many vita cartridges work on the pstv and the cartridge socket is annoying to use as well. Of the vita cartridges I had (not many) only need for speed most wanted worked.

Sony have also stopped the hack that allows a greater range of games to work unless another new hack has sorted that.

Still a nice little device but a huge number of issues and limitations.

I basically bought mine as I had a load of vita games available thanks to the ps plus monthly games which motivated me as I wanted to play them.

PSTV is an incredible micro-console given when it's in the right hands. I.e, the PSTV is able to play every PS1 and PSP game made (plus Minis' but who cares about those) so accessing the PSP mode in PSTV allows to play not only PSP games though also retro emulators (better to go with the US NES/SNES roms for superior performance).

It's awesome.

gambiting
24 Nov 15 #56
Well, I would probably need a good 30-40 metres of HDMI cable, and I don't think they work well over such distance(even if they did, I doubt that the controllers would have signal past all the walls.). And I have the cables laid down so my desktop PC has stable internet, I didn't lay down so much gigabit cable just to use remoteplay :-)

I've just ordered one of these so not got my hands on one yet but I believe the answer to your questions is yes. You can use your PS3 controller and I believe save games to the internal storage. If you want to download digital Vita games though you will need a Vita memory card as the built in storage isn't big enough for storing full games. You will have to use physical Vita games without a memory card. If anything i've said is incorrect hopefully someone will put me right but I think i'm correct.

76mbps is NOT a fast WIRED connection, hells it's not even a fast wireless connection. Try going 1000mbps, gigabit setups are cheap as hell nowadays.

Hopefully you are not talking about your external connection (internet), as that will have zero affect on how streaming works while you are at home. You can have a 1000mbps internet connection, but the speed at witch your data moves inside of the house (Local area network) through your devices will be limited by your router/hub/switch (they usually come at 100mbps or 1000mbps).

It's highly recommend that you use a gigabit wired connection on your PSTV to your PS4. Make sure both are connected to the same hub/switch/router, as having multiple switches can cause bottlenecks (the speed within the switch is the best, once you connect another switch all devices connected to the second switch will be limited in communication to the devices on the first switch by the link the the first switch is connected to the second switch.

http://linuxgazette.net/135/misc/pfeiffer/bottleneck.png

Blah i said switch too many times!

I hope this helps you get a better connection with you PSTV, i don't own one (that's why i am looking at this deal) but i have quite a bit of experience in ICT Infrastructure professionally and i thought this information might help you.
gambiting
25 Nov 15 #65
If you have "connect directly to PS4 system" enabled, it will ignore your wired connection and still connect via wifi, causing lag. I've got a setup with everything connected over gigabit ethernet and it's running very, very well, certainly well enough to play GTA.

XEntity
27 Nov 15 #67
I've just plugged in the gigabit cable directly to the ps4, as this was going via a 100 mbit switch, and still the same all the settings are correct, have tried pretty much every combination of setting on ps4 and PSTV, and still too much lag for ps4 to make it acceptable, try driving a car on GTA in any form of traffic you'll see what I mean, it's only a fraction of a second, but that's the difference between plying an enjoyable game and crashing in to an easily avoidable car!
gambiting
27 Nov 15 #68
The thing is, I'm not pulling this out of my ass - I have a setup at home where I've played GTA 5 over remote play for many hours and while there is a tiny bit of lag, it's certainly not bad enough to stop me from enjoying the game. Hence, I think that there is still some problem with your config - bad switch, bad cable, PSTV connecting over Wi-Fi or PS4 connecting over wifi, despite having a cable plugged in. I mean, I could very easily record myself playing GTA5 over remoteplay and put it on youtube, and you would see that it can be smooth. I have no interest in convincing you it is though, I don't work for either Sony or Rockstar :P
XEntity
27 Nov 15 #69
No idea what this issue is then, my network setup is business grade kit, connected to a 24port rack mount gigabit switch, definitely not connected to wireless either via the Cisco access points or direct between devices as they couldn't physically get the signal between each other... The only thing I can think of is the long run of network cable from one end to the other, but not even close to a 100ft cable run, will crimp up another direct cable and see if that makes any difference, if it does I'll report back..
XEntity
27 Nov 15 #70
So... New cable made no difference, different gigabit switch made no difference.. So it's either my ps4, my PSTV, the settings on one of these or just my standards are too high! My housemate also has a ps4 so when he's not using it I'll connect to his and see how that goes.. Would be handy if you could tell me what your settings are on your ps4 and PSTV. My ps4 is currently set to 1080 resolution, wondering if you have yours on 720? Making the transcoding easier perhaps? And is the PSTV on standard settings?

Try changing the display settings on your PS TV to 720p and not auto. It will not try and adjust then.

My set up is PS4 wired into router. Router has a 500mb tplink plug connected. Upstairs my PS TV is connected to the other tplink plug. This set up runs more smoothly then it did over wireless.

Admittedly COD wasn't great, I was able to make kills but was delayed. If I play an offline game though like watchdogs or fallout it's perfect though, no issues. That's what I will use mine for. When she watches her sh1t I can play my sh1t

Your cables are rated for certain speeds. Cat5 should support 1 gigabit no problem because it has enough wires inside it. There are cables rated Cat6, which are basically guaranteed to support 1 gigabit speeds - but the only difference is that Cat6 cables were tested at those speeds and are certified for them. You are basically paying for the certification, nothing else.

Also, the things you posted are powerline adapters - they are pretty quick, but depending on your house they can introduce quite a bit of lag. Personally, I've ran actual cables up and down the house, the connection is much better suited for remote play that way.
MrJinxy
28 Nov 15 #88
Thanks, the power line adaptors are doing the job fine. I just wondered if improving the cables would make it any better, if not I'm still happy.

I get a small, tiny bit of lag online, but overall I'm happy. Especially for offline games such as watchdogs/fallout

Begize to Deeco
30 Nov 15 1 #97
It's basically the same thing, except with the PSTV it only works on your local (home) network, be it wired or wireless. With Remote Play on the Vita will also work anywhere you can get a wireless connection to the internet, for example I can play my PS4 remotely from my girlfriends house.

I don't think the PSTV allows you to use the "second screen" feature like the Vita does.
Gamer_U
29 Nov 15 #92

Just the thought of playing PSP and PS1 games on a micro-console makes it totally worth it. Sucks for those who don't see its value.
Gamer_U
29 Nov 15 #93
One can play all PSP games without rebuying them from the PS Store but as far as how that goes.. Wololo.
Begize
30 Nov 15 #96
Sorry, a bit confusing! I meant it's connected using a cable (rather than wirelessly) through a gigabit switch to my home network. Incidentally, as all my network kit is in the loft, that's also where the wireless access point is which means the PSTV gets a very strong wireless connection. I was going to run some cables down into the bedroom but as the wireless seems to work so well, I'm having second thoughts.

In terms of online lag, that's going to be more affected by the speed of your internet connection rather than the home network, be it wired or wireless. Personally I did notice a slight improvement having my PS3 connected with a cable rather than wireless which is why I ran some cables into the lounge. I think using powerline adapters is a good way of doing the same thing without the mess!

3.20 OFW is the absolute lowest firmware that PSTV has so no, you either get one with that or you don't. PlayStation account is only used to transfer the two exploitable games.
