Exactly. There will be a small but constant current draw for the 5v circuit, whether or not something is plugged in. Rather like having an appliance in standby.
Also, when the USB part packs in, it's hassle to change it.

My plug in Samsung chargers work just fine and can be switched off when not needed.

I`d just buy a USB 3-pin plug for a couple of quid, plug it in ANY socket in the house, job done. :smirk:

Dont buy cheaper ones , it will damage you phone battery also most of the phone needs 1A (these are 2A sockets)

the USB charger is constantly on in these units. that puts me off

samsung galaxy s6 needs 2.1amp or 2.4 cant remember but over the 2amp..

you can get MK one if pay a few quid. check amazon

​quite a while longer, i have a 2amp charger and it adds about 3 hours to the full charge time from 0%! still good sockets though

Behind your twin 13 Amp Socket is a metal box that it screws into. It's usually only 25mm / 1 inch deep. Many of these charger sockets need a 40mm metal box behind them to accommodate the transformer. It's not always a straight swap.

Is it just a matter of swapping old 2 gang socket for this one -same wiring etc?

Wonder how these react when performing electrical testing. Wouldn't they have to be removed from the circuit before IR testing? Or does the on/off switch also isolate the USB sockets.

Some do fit into a empty 25mm wall box. But the box already in the wall has 6 - maybe 9 - cables in it. 3 Brown - 3 Blue - 3 Earth and is already full.

You accept power leakage on every day appliances yet your concerned about the usb socket. In the big scheme of things.....

The idea that "simple electric jobs can easily be achieved by people with common sense" has kept me in full employment all my life. They always blame their "good mate of mine did it". And their wives stand behind them shaking their heads. "Yes - and your mates left all his tools on the floor".

My "pal" & I have made factual comment on the performance of the product.
Other readers can take that into account when making their decision to purchase or not.

That adds a lot more value than telling someone to move one.

If you do change sockets I'd recommend a plug in socket tester with the 3 indicators. They're cheap but will instantly tell you if wires have been transposed, missed or you have no earth. Not a full test but a little more reassurance than nothing.

The most common mistake people make when fitting any replacement socket is:
After tightening the retaining screw down on the two brown cables try and pull each one out.
The screw may have only gripped one cable. Do this for each of the 3 terminals.
It will still work if you've only gripped one. But you'll have started a chain of faults where the loose cable starts to burn.
Then the good cable will start burning too - because it's overloaded.

Figured they would be, if you can't isolate them other than by disconnection that's going to be a pain for any electrician.

Sending these back as when wired in the usb light is so bright with nothing connected it lights the landing up. No idea why they have done it this way as makes no sense at all. Will get the ones from screwfix as these dont have a permanently on light.
