Have one, love it. Paid £105 and thought that was a steal so HOT HOT HOT.

Replaced my crappy SKY SR101 firbre router, never looked back since.

Another thumbs up for merlin (dont forget to a donate a few quid if you like his firmware).

2.4ghz range could be better, but the 5ghz is so fast I never use 2.4 anymore unless its a really old device.

I have one of these with the latest Asus software. They are excellent. Never misses a beat and strong wifi all over the house.

my 2.4ghz reaches 9 houses away (about 100 meters) outdoors.
had to mod out the EU region in the bootloader to get full power (Merlin forks do the same)

Try Tomato, much better than Merlin firmware - a lot faster wif, although not as user friendly.

The asus is a much better router, better firmware support, the router should be quicker, longer range, more reliable, 3rd party firmware support, and some other great features like near mid range NAS support. You have to remember the asus router is usually priced around £150 price mark. It's a no brainer, get the asus.

tried to flubit this but they don't accept pcworld, then tried to flubit amazon but they keep detecting the wrong price (£140+) instead of the current amazon price which is the same as pcworld, now that pcworld is OOS amazon price is likely to go up very soon.


btw anybody got experience of using this Asus router with BT Infinity? currently have the Hub4 which has separate modem (signal abit weak at the far end of 1st floor so using a BT Dual-Band Wi-Fi Extender there), want to get better coverage into there and also to the garage and maybe back garden too, don't know if it's better to upgrade to Hub5, or will this Asus give significantly better coverage area and stable fast connection?

I have this it took two days to get it up and running. I know what I am doing. I re flashed with merlins which gave me some more options but still would not give me a stable 5 gh channel eventually got it working. Throughput was about 100% up on my old net gear but the range was very similar. I would not buy it again and could not recommend this flaky piece of kit

This is very ignorant thing to do. There are very good reasons why the transmission power is restricted.

Actually the ignorance is on Asus's part as they sell a Router with EU region settings, not UK, UK has different power levels and channels, They are lazy and would rather upset a lot of people instead of flashing regional firmware and shipping to that country.

My router now works on the channel and power allowed in my country, as simple as that, DFS works and swaps channel when needed. I am happy with my router and not breaking any laws.

Open WRT allows region settings, and they are not breaking any laws.

How to, I changed to GB instead of totally unlocked as that disabled DFS meaning you may cause a big solid lump on a radar weather map, I live 10 miles from East Midlands airport so I didn't want to cause a problem.

Just a tip - ASUS very quietly released a really decent android app (no ios yet I don't think) called ASUS Router which you can use to control this and other Asus routers and attached devices - just search google play for "Asus router".

thanks for all the feedback guys. I think the WAN settings etc for BT Infinity have been covered in various threads on various forums, so that shouldn't be a problem, will find out if/when I get it.

Another question I want to ask is what about the additional SSIDs that my current BT Hub4 also transmits/broadcasts? namely BTWifi-X and BTWifi-with-FON, which I know is my "contribution" to the overall BTWifi/FON network, which I'm willing/happy to share because I also get to use the BTWifi/FON network when I'm away from home. So will this RT-AC68U also broadcast these additional SSIDs? so I continue to contribute to the BTWifi/FON network?

Also does the RT-AC68U have the option/feature to broadcast a temporary SSID for when you have friends/guests comeover and visitng? so you don't have to give them your actual password/key to your normal network.

You can go one better - it will allow *two* guest networks - one on on the 2ghz, one on the 5ghz band which you can turn on and off as you need once you have set-up.

No - I've never used the home-hub, they have never stopped me. You could change the SSID to match the homehub but I'm not sure that is the only element that the app uses to provide FON service but I'm happy to be corrected.

Are you using BT infinity? do you know any settings/configurations so the Asus matches the BT Hub's multi SSIDs for BTWifi/FON?

I'm on cable but know they have a settings page for things like BT to allow the router to work, best to ask others that know. I think this applies to Fiber modems but not sure.
