I know what company's do for outsourcing. I work in manufacturing. I think you will find that Panasonic's cheaper tv range is a Vestel television with a Panasonic badge on it without any involvement or research and development by Panasonic. I doubt very much that it will be an LG or Samsung panel in the tv's assembled by Vestel. Hitachi and Toshiba, goods names of years ago are also made by Vestel along with Sharp. Go to your local Asda and look on the 24" 300 panasonic range. It says assembled in Turkey. There was another post on here a few weeks ago with vestel tv and panasonic. Identical. Richer Sounds are offering 5 year warranty on some of these low end 'Panasonics' so who knows they may last but unfortunately Vestel is known for making low end cheap quality electronics so I will pass and stick to my LG or Samsung. I never bought Sony so cannot comment. I only ever bought a Panasonic once. Couple of years ago from Argos. After a week it developed a green vertical line on the screen. Took it back and bought an LG. Early Vestel perhaps who knows. Bought a Logik tv made by Vestel from Currys. Had a fault on the audio output and took it back. With most things you get what you pay for but there are a lot of people out there who think they are getting a genuine Panasonic at a bargain price when they are not. All they are getting is a Polaroid or a Bush with a premium badge. I have another example of buying a cheap tv. Some years ago now called a Pentus with a Samsung panel. Didn't even get two years out of before it went bang. Bought an LG which lasted me 8 years. You get what you pay for in electronics.
Panasonic don't make their own panels on their sets not made by Vestel either. Rumour has it they use LG. With Samsung you got a 25% chance of getting a Samsung panel as they use four different manufacturers for their tv's including their own panel. Some Sonys are also rumoured to out-source their panels but not sure on which models.
If you buy cheap and don't want to buy it twice in 5 years then go to Richer Sounds or John Lewis and get the long guarantee. It may come in useful. Personally I would not be buying any tv from Currys when JL will price match if more expensive and you get a 5 year warranty. Currys need to put their faith in the products they are selling.
umm... Sony TV is 10" bigger but has a res of 1080p whereas the Panny has a 4k res. You can't really compare them. Sony should be better in every area bar resolution.

£599 to £399 saving a massive £200 on the typically unrealistic RRP for a cheaply built TV with a Panasonic badge stuck on. I'll pass. I'm not saying this tv won't suit your needs (until 4K standards change), I'd just prefer to buy once. Buy cheap, buy twice. My 12 year old Hitachi (from the days before they had vestel stick Hitachi badges on) is still in daily use.

People complain about this on literally every tv that gets posted on hotdeals though. Which deals are for 'good' tv's under £400?

does any programming or current gen consoles run things in 4k yet?

Current gen consoles can hardly run 1080p smoothly. 4K is meant to be supported for both consoles soonish (but this is mainly for streaming things like Netflix in 4k).
Even next gen consoles won't run 4k. You will be lucky if they can run 1440p.
If you want to run 4K your talking at least £1k in graphics cards.
