I know what company's do for outsourcing. I work in manufacturing. I think you will find that Panasonic's cheaper tv range is a Vestel television with a Panasonic badge on it without any involvement or research and development by Panasonic. I doubt very much that it will be an LG or Samsung panel in the tv's assembled by Vestel. Hitachi and Toshiba, goods names of years ago are also made by Vestel along with Sharp. Go to your local Asda and look on the 24" 300 panasonic range. It says assembled in Turkey. There was another post on here a few weeks ago with vestel tv and panasonic. Identical. Richer Sounds are offering 5 year warranty on some of these low end 'Panasonics' so who knows they may last but unfortunately Vestel is known for making low end cheap quality electronics so I will pass and stick to my LG or Samsung. I never bought Sony so cannot comment. I only ever bought a Panasonic once. Couple of years ago from Argos. After a week it developed a green vertical line on the screen. Took it back and bought an LG. Early Vestel perhaps who knows. Bought a Logik tv made by Vestel from Currys. Had a fault on the audio output and took it back. With most things you get what you pay for but there are a lot of people out there who think they are getting a genuine Panasonic at a bargain price when they are not. All they are getting is a Polaroid or a Bush with a premium badge. I have another example of buying a cheap tv. Some years ago now called a Pentus with a Samsung panel. Didn't even get two years out of before it went bang. Bought an LG which lasted me 8 years. You get what you pay for in electronics.
Panasonic don't make their own panels on their sets not made by Vestel either. Rumour has it they use LG. With Samsung you got a 25% chance of getting a Samsung panel as they use four different manufacturers for their tv's including their own panel. Some Sonys are also rumoured to out-source their panels but not sure on which models.
If you buy cheap and don't want to buy it twice in 5 years then go to Richer Sounds or John Lewis and get the long guarantee. It may come in useful. Personally I would not be buying any tv from Currys when JL will price match if more expensive and you get a 5 year warranty. Currys need to put their faith in the products they are selling.
umm... Sony TV is 10" bigger but has a res of 1080p whereas the Panny has a 4k res. You can't really compare them. Sony should be better in every area bar resolution.

£599 to £399 saving a massive £200 on the typically unrealistic RRP for a cheaply built TV with a Panasonic badge stuck on. I'll pass. I'm not saying this tv won't suit your needs (until 4K standards change), I'd just prefer to buy once. Buy cheap, buy twice. My 12 year old Hitachi (from the days before they had vestel stick Hitachi badges on) is still in daily use.

People complain about this on literally every tv that gets posted on hotdeals though. Which deals are for 'good' tv's under £400?

does any programming or current gen consoles run things in 4k yet?

Current gen consoles can hardly run 1080p smoothly. 4K is meant to be supported for both consoles soonish (but this is mainly for streaming things like Netflix in 4k).
Even next gen consoles won't run 4k. You will be lucky if they can run 1440p.
If you want to run 4K your talking at least £1k in graphics cards.
Word is getting round that these Panasonics are not made by Panasonic so prices are dropping. At some point people will buy even when they know it's made by Vestel. For me though unless it came with a 5 or 6 year guarantee it can stay in the shop and I will use my £400 towards something that is manufactured by the company that has the same name as the badge on the front.

Panasonic still use their own R+D team to design there TVs- Panasonic outsource some of there products to 3rd party to be built to make it cheaper. I'm afraid every company does this!!
I got a sony then a panasonic
I preferred panasonic- such a better tv than sonys and it was half price of it tbh

There is a lot of sense spoken in this narrative. I have recently bought the Sony 65 inch 9005 which is an amazing tv and also can be used for presentations, display etc and replaced a very good LG which is still going strong. Its clearly at another price point, however, one thing I will say is that if app's are important to you then the Samsung has them all and is better than Sony and LG. Panasonic and a number of other manufacturers offer 'SMART' tv's which are actually not that smart , with questionable quality panels etc.
The Nvidia shield has a few Android games in 4k and that costs from £149...

Many Panasonic'are getting Freeview Play which is far better than Samsung's apps, older Samsung TV's have had their apps discontinued by providers and the sets often suffer from display issues like screen tearing and reliability issues.

Looking at Freetime Play it looks no different to Youview. I have a Youview box and it certainly has better on demand players than most tv manufacturers and certainly equal to the players offered by Samsung. I bought my brand new Youview box for £60.00 when I ditched Sky last year and never looked back. Just bear in mind though if it is the same as Youview you cannot windback all of the programmes on all of the channels. Don't believe what the salesmen tell you, not ALL channels and programmes can be wound back. Some are just not available but having the beauty of 320gb of recording time I don't have to windback too often, providing I remember to set it up to record
I see in the press that two large electronic companies have signed up to Freetime Play. One is Panasonic, would you like any clues to guess who the other is. Ok what do most of us have for Christmas dinner. It could be a type of virgin. It produces Toshiba, JVC, Hitachi, Sharp. You know all those massive names from the 80's, 90's etc that we came to love and trust or maybe hate in some instances. Still can't guess. Ok it's Vestel. Now why would they want to be signing up to Freetime Play. To put on their other tv's that don't have a Panasonic badge on them. Who knows, but it is a bit of a coincidence.
Now my posts may hint that I am not a lover of Vestel products but that isn't true. I have one of their freezers. I am ok with the fact that companies go out of business and another comes along and takes over the business. Fine, but what I think is totally wrong is a household name such as Panasonic is selling another manufacturer's product with the Panasonic name. There are hundreds possibly thousands of people out there who are going out buying what they think is a Panasonic at a bargain price not realising it is made by someone else which probably has the same parts in it as the Polaroid or Technika it's sat next to which they are turning their nose up at. I have known about Vestel for a while and who they make for but up until that point I would have been none the wiser. It would be interesting to see the response from the sales staff at Currys when questioning some of the Panasonic range.
I'd love a big 4K screen for PC gaming, but the response rate of the pixels tends to be a bit poor on TVs. I'm betting it's even worse on 4K screens and even worse again on the cheaper ones.

You can run SNES games from the early 1990s at 4k if you want. Won't make them look like games from today. Graphics is a lot more than resolution. PS4 games aren't running at 900p in some cases because the Nvidia Shield has more graphics power. It's because PS4 is running games with better textures, lighting, shadows etc. than the Nvidia Shield. Resolution itself is meaningless. It's whether you can play a game with the best textures available at that resolution with a decent framerate. The PS4 could run games at 4k tomorrow morning but they wouldn't look any better. Currently, to run games with the best textures on the current market, you need a graphics card that will cost around £1,000. They're not selling these graphics card despite being unnecessary for a bit of a laugh. Nor are the PS4 and Xbox One sometimes running at 900p, maximum of 1080p, for a laugh either. It's because running the latest graphics at 4k resolution cannot be done at that price point.

I still think a decent quality 1080p screen made by a top brand manufacturer running decent processors will ALWAYS be better than one of these low end budget televisions manufactured in Turkey not by Panasonic. Until someone shows me different then I will stick to my 1080p quad core processing tv. Seeing as I don't have fibre broadband, an older bluray and don't do Netflix there seems little point.

Sorry but your £1000 graphics card to run 4k games comment is ridiculous. I have a 4k Tv and I play 4K games from a PC with a graphics card worth £100 such as the GTX 750 Ti, I can run games smoothly with the £100 graphics card hitting on average 60 fps with medium settings
MintMouse

not entirely accurate on the graphics cards. Sure for the most demanding games even £1k on graphics cards might not run 4k at the highest settings, but older less demanding pc games can run in 4k nicely. Which is always nice.
