Firstly, all credit to UnclePotter who first posted this deal, but I feel that the cheap high speed fibre aspect of the deal is better than the free "copper" broadband offer he highlights. So I thought it worth the repost.
SSE are offering full speed, 70mb download and 20mb upload, fibre with line rental, including weekend calls, for £24.50 a month for 2 years, with free connection. This is by far the cheapest deal I can find for that speed. It says unlimited downloads, but there is a traffic management policy which you should read to see if it suits you.
There is also £126 cashback available from topcashback to sweeten the deal, and if it pays out, it takes the deal down to £19.25 a month. Incredible! There are not many reviews for SSE broadband, so there is a risk involved, but one I have decided to take. I leave the choice to you :)

Taz, do you by any chance live in the middle of nowhere where your broadband is on a legacy ADSL Max or WBC Fixed Rate connection which does not exceed 2 Mbps, and have a slight hatred for people who can obtain ADSL2+ or VDSL broadband whereas you can't?

So glad I had put my cup of tea down when I read that. Plusnet support being good, lol.

It's to do with the way the underlying technology works on the coax segment (I.e from your house to the cab) there are few rumours around at cable forum that an upstream upgrade may happen at some point but in some areas it needs upgrades to the access network before it can be reconfigured to support the higher speeds.
If I've understood how DOCSIS works effectively everything is broadcast on to the cable segment but encrypted so that in theory only the modem that's supposed to receive it knows what it was. Because of this it's a lot easier to do downstream (Originates from a single point i.e the Cab) than upstream (Originates from multiple points I.e the modems). Also the Cab will have carrier grade transmission kit that can pump out a much stronger signal than the puny chip in your modem can.
I suppose it's a bit like being in a conference, you can hear the speaker easily because he/she has a PA system but they can't hear you as easily because you don't and there's noise from the other participants.

terms say you get the discount after staying for 2 years... so not sure how it works.
I'll stick with Origin Broadband

I actually work for sse dealing with talk and broadband and from what we are told in the sales part it is applied every month to your bill. You're in an 18 month contract and the 6 months after are discounted on a rolling contract. You can find these terms and conditions on the site.

I get 50Mb/5Mb from Virgin for £18.50 without phone line. Unless you want a home phone line, and I don't know many people who do, you might want to keep the £144 difference (again unless your that bothered about a slightly faster connection)?

But for the people not in a virgin area like a good few this is a good deal.

lee20010: According to the t&c the discount is applied to your bill every month for 2 years. I suspect if you try to leave before the 2 years are up, you would have to pay the cancellation fee, and repay the discount too, so that you have paid the equivalent of the full amount every month (£37).
DemonIT: as tipsy1973 says, Virgin is not an option for me, so this is my best bet.

Not 100% sure, but I don't think you pay the discount back. But there are charges for cancelling before your contract ends and depending on your package there's a maximum charge they can give you or its x amount for each month if that's under the maximum charge. It should be explained online it is definitely explained when placing the order on the phone.

Ah, ok, this is an EFM product then, hence the need for phone line?
