Firstly, all credit to UnclePotter who first posted this deal, but I feel that the cheap high speed fibre aspect of the deal is better than the free "copper" broadband offer he highlights. So I thought it worth the repost.

SSE are offering full speed, 70mb download and 20mb upload, fibre with line rental, including weekend calls, for £24.50 a month for 2 years, with free connection. This is by far the cheapest deal I can find for that speed. It says unlimited downloads, but there is a traffic management policy which you should read to see if it suits you.

There is also £126 cashback available from topcashback to sweeten the deal, and if it pays out, it takes the deal down to £19.25 a month. Incredible! There are not many reviews for SSE broadband, so there is a risk involved, but one I have decided to take. I leave the choice to you :)

Taz, do you by any chance live in the middle of nowhere where your broadband is on a legacy ADSL Max or WBC Fixed Rate connection which does not exceed 2 Mbps, and have a slight hatred for people who can obtain ADSL2+ or VDSL broadband whereas you can't?

It's to do with the way the underlying technology works on the coax segment (I.e from your house to the cab) there are few rumours around at cable forum that an upstream upgrade may happen at some point but in some areas it needs upgrades to the access network before it can be reconfigured to support the higher speeds.

If I've understood how DOCSIS works effectively everything is broadcast on to the cable segment but encrypted so that in theory only the modem that's supposed to receive it knows what it was. Because of this it's a lot easier to do downstream (Originates from a single point i.e the Cab) than upstream (Originates from multiple points I.e the modems). Also the Cab will have carrier grade transmission kit that can pump out a much stronger signal than the puny chip in your modem can.

I suppose it's a bit like being in a conference, you can hear the speaker easily because he/she has a PA system but they can't hear you as easily because you don't and there's noise from the other participants.

I actually work for sse dealing with talk and broadband and from what we are told in the sales part it is applied every month to your bill. You're in an 18 month contract and the 6 months after are discounted on a rolling contract. You can find these terms and conditions on the site.

I get 50Mb/5Mb from Virgin for £18.50 without phone line. Unless you want a home phone line, and I don't know many people who do, you might want to keep the £144 difference (again unless your that bothered about a slightly faster connection)?

lee20010: According to the t&c the discount is applied to your bill every month for 2 years. I suspect if you try to leave before the 2 years are up, you would have to pay the cancellation fee, and repay the discount too, so that you have paid the equivalent of the full amount every month (£37).

DemonIT: as tipsy1973 says, Virgin is not an option for me, so this is my best bet.
Cotch85 to psychomech
18 Apr 15 #23
Not 100% sure, but I don't think you pay the discount back. But there are charges for cancelling before your contract ends and depending on your package there's a maximum charge they can give you or its x amount for each month if that's under the maximum charge. It should be explained online it is definitely explained when placing the order on the phone.

Virgins 50Mbit package has 3 Mbit/s upload not 5 Mbit.

The only reason I can think of for having 50/5 is if you're on a higher package and your area's not had the last round of speed upgrades as AFAIK the current tiers are 50/3 100/6 and 152/12

Edit:

http://my.virginmedia.com/traffic-management/traffic-management-policy-thresholds.html shows the upload speeds on the various packages and also what they get throttled to by the STM (It's still enabled on the upload)

Hi guys I posted this on the other SSE broadband forum but thought I'd add it here too:

I'm currently with Sky but the discount they gave me for the year is almost up so been doing some research.
Just rang SSE and got the following nuggets of info that others may find handy:

They are on the Openreach network
Their call centre is in the UK and they've just hired 60 new call centre staff - (spoke to a lovely lady on her first day so if she is anything to go by the support should be effective)
The contract is for 18 months and after this you move to a rolling monthly contract (so would need to stay for an additional 6 months as in their T&C's - there is no obligation to take out another extended contract after the 18 months)
Discounts are applied each month NOT at the end of the term
They said they've been doing broadband for a couple of years but as others have mentioned in the forum I've not been able to see any reviews on their service

Sounds like a really good offer - my only hang up (and this isn't a fault of SSE) is that because I am with Sky they will need to get an engineer in and switch my line which means I could be without broadband for up to 7 days.

Personally I'm going to contact Sky first to see what deal they can offer me but if they aren't competitive I am very tempted to go with SSE as their prices are some of the lowest around particularly for fibre.
fishmaster to LoAl
19 Apr 15 #35
Sky will do a deal if you want to stay with them. I sorted out one a month ago with them as I'm with them because of the O2 broadband take over deal they did and when my contract ran out, it continued at an eye watering price, so I phoned up and complained got the last month price reduced as a future price reduction on next month. Think I ended up with it costing me half price for the year on fibre.

dragon2611 to eldre
19 Apr 15 #36
Try checking the speed with BT or someone similar, as it will be openreach FTTC they'll be using.

Then you'll need to call them to confirm it's available to you as if they're using TalkTalk as their back-haul provider it will probably also depend on TT having a GEA handover that covers the FTTC cabs in your area (A physical interconnect between the Openreach FTTC network and TT's own network)
lukec36 to eldre
19 Apr 15 1 #61
You can't check BT based fibre speeds with anything but a phone number. However, if your house is reasonably close to your BT street cabinet then you should be looking at 70mb plus.

I.E. My house is about 3km from the telephone exchange and I can only get about 4mb on an ADSL 2 service ('up to 24mb')
The street cabinet is about 4 min walk from my house and I get 75mb on the 'up to 80mb' fibre service

I too was with O2 for broadband and last year Sky offered me an amazing discount to take their full service so got TV (Family pack, Multiroom), broadband and phone line (including Anytime) for around £30 a month.

Sky prices have gone up in that time (now on £35 a month) but once the deal runs out I'll be looking at around £72 which for the channels I watch isn't worth it.

I'm convinced that they won;t be able to offer me anywhere near the same deal as I am now an "existing" customer rather than the prized "new" customers they seem to want to attract hence why the SSE offer looks like a goer.

Will ring Sky though and see.

Sky don't tend to offer retention deals for broadband only customers.

If you are on fibre with sky, you should be able to move providers without an engineer visit or downtime - that was the case for me last year.
LoAl
19 Apr 15 1 #47
Can't say if this will work but could an option be to type in another landline number that was a BT line to access the sign up page (obviously ring SSE beforehand to ensure they can provide you with their services!) and then complete all the other fields accurately and confirm the deal then ring up SSE and say you typed the wrong number by accident?

This should still allow for the TCB claim right as you've clicked through? Not 100% sure about TCB nuances as I've only used it a couple of times.

Would be nice as BT has been promising us fibre for the last 4 years and they say it won't be before December again...... so I doubt if it will happen then (one of the wealthiest London boroughs as well).

What's their traffic management policy like?

Do thy throttle p2p etc?

Read their policy but it's vague

BroaDBaND traFFIC MaNagEMENt PolICy
Our network operator undertakes traffic management to ensure that our customers receive optimum performance at all times. The principles of this network management policy are:
- To make sure that time-critical applications like Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) are always prioritised.
- To protect interactive applications like web-browsing and Virtual Private Network (VPN) from non-time sensitive download traffic.
- To flex the network under demand to cope with normal peaks and troughs from day to day and month to month.
- To flex the network in the event of unusual demands in traffic or disaster situations such as a network failure.
- To provide a ‘quality of service’ effect, meaning multiple applications running on the same line interact with each other effectively, and use of high demand protocols like Peer-to-Peer (P2P) doesn’t swamp time-sensitive traffic such as online gaming or a VoIP call.
Traffic types are identified in real-time based on a combination of port, source IP address and DPI signature detection. This allows our network operator at any given time to manage the network capacity and prioritise time sensitive traffic by reducing the throughput of the other less time sensitive protocols.

Bought virgin 50mb yesterday - 4 pounds a month for 8 months, then 17.50 for last 4 months. 164 line rental up front. Total cost 266 or 22.17 a month.

Can I just ask, why would I need high upload speeds? I tend to browse websites a lot, I stream a lot online as well and download a lot. I don't upload anything to cloud or online storage etc besides the odd email attachments. So should a 50mb virgin download speed be more than sufficient? I'm currently on EE 6mb line

Another issue i have, which could be an openreach issue, is frequent adsl disconnection during a short period of time during the week (it is different every time it happens, but when it happens, broadband is disconnected every 5 minutes). Could be the router though.

Have fun trying to download a 60GB game with that connection, seriously, no we are not bloody spoilt, we are just living in the times, file sizes got bigger so we need faster internet to cope with that in a reasonable time period.

We went from DVD to 720p to 1080p to now 4K+ in a space of about 5 years, good luck streaming or downloading a 4k one, hell even a 1080p movie with your internet.

Sometimes it is incredibly satisfying to set a download going for a new game and be done in minutes not hours. To be able to play right away, not have to leave the PC on for hours and go do something.

Has anyone tried to get TCB with this deal? I'm currently on TalkTalk so they say that they need to set up a new line, which can only be done on the phone. I'd quite like £90 though!

I saw another poster mentioned putting in a different number and then calling to say that it's wrong, would this work?

I've tried this but it hasn't tracked and I've also heard bot all from SSE in the last 10 days apart from initial email. I'm thinking I might cancel and just go with plusnet or someone else to be honest as not sure about SSE with such little aftersales contact, despite me calling them to change the number.

im looking to move from bt for this deal. anyone know if I can add anytime calls to the package when ordering or at a later date?

also has anyone signed up if so whats the process been like so far?

I signed up for the Ultra Fast Fibre Broadband online and then phoned them to add the anytime calls package and caller display. A bit miffed that the line rental for all other packages jumps from £12 to £15 and that caller display costs £3.25, but overall still cheaper than the competition, even after adding the extras.

As for signing up I did this straight away and glad I'm did because it took over a week for PlusNet to give me my Mac Key. When I received this, I simply called SSE with the Mac Key and then asked for the extras to be added.

A week later got the contract details in the post. Signed up on 19th April and am due to be connected on 11 May. I already have an existing fibre connection.

Looks like plusnet is the way to go I rang SSE yesterday to ask a few questions and had to wait in a queue which is unusual for a sales line. Probably not a good sign for dealing with them after sign up

My topcashback also hasn't tracked.
I signed up on Sunday. I called today to give them my Mac key and they haven't processed my order yet so it's not even set up on the system. He did take my Mac code and say he would email it to the department that do online sign ups. I'm not too confident I've made the right choice. I expect they are very busy though.

doesnt look like such a good deal so far. i decided to go with plusnet as at least there is some customer feedback regarding their service. I signed up on thursday (7th) and my activation date is next friday (15th) so far so good.

paid line rental upfront and got first 6 months 40mb fibre optic bb with anytime calls for £5, next six 19.99 and last six months £35.95 plus £60 quidco and £50 cashback direct from plusnet. fingers crossed it goes well as even full price will be half what i was paying to bt .

You seem surprised by that? You have to pay openreach an installation charge why would you do that when the customer can cancel? As for the Mac code situation I agree that's not good enough.

10 May 15 #122
None loss of service far. Although the phone service is due to be switched on 11th May, I have not had a confirmed date for the broadband connection as yet. Router not yet received.

One thing that's noticeable with SSE is that other than the initial application and confirmation email, nothing else has occurred online. All subsequent correspondence has been through the post. The online registration did not even encourage setting up an account. This I tried to do separately, but when trying to log in after set up, would not recognise the user name and password? Perhaps the online account is geared for gas and electricity accounts only?

On another note, I called the technical department to find out which model of router they currently use for the Fibre broadband. I am advised the model is the Technicolor tg799vn v2, which seems to improvement over PlusNet's crappy TG582N. Also with SSE, there's no postage and packing charge for the router either.

It is either the router you got from EE or it is EE. Either way it is EE.

12 May 15 #125
It's not unknown for routers to crash and come back after about 5mins.
fileexit
12 May 15 #126
I meant the connection chimes back for 5 min before going down again..

î was just reading more comments here, I can see three of another EE use with apparently the same disconnection problem..

so far, I gathered that SSE is a good deal, but their after sale service is simply rubbish, is this enough for paying a little extra and going with plusnet? maybe..

Signed up on the day this deal was logged. Gave them my mac code a few weeks ago. received a welcome pack in the post but heard nothing since. Rang them today and the guy stated they've got a backlog of unauthorised customers on the system and they don't know why or how quickly it will be resolved. All they could say is they had someone looking at it and hoped I'd hear something within 2 weeks. Shocking start hope it improves soon or I'm off.

This, from the TopCashBack site might give a clue to what the problem is:-
ONLY existing BT lines customers can purchase SSE Broaband online and only these applications are eligible for cashback. Purchases completed over the phone cannot be tracked and will not receive cashback on the order.
So if potential customers, without BT lines, have been putting in BT numbers that they do not have, (as was suggested on here earlier to try and get the cashback), this might have confused the system, and these might be the unauthorised customers that have got onto the system

Further update. After the

Just to provide a further update. Shortly after the phone line was switched on 11 May, I had no indication as to when my fibre broadband would be switched so I gave SSE another call.

Firstly they asked whether they had my Mac Key and explained that this was submitted some time ago. Put on hold and then asked about a arranging a suitable date for the BT Open reach engineer to install. Explained that I was already fibre enabled some 3 years ago via Plusnet's 76mb service. I was then put on hold again and then given a confirmed connection date of 28 May 2015. Bearing in mind I signed up online on 19 April online (in order to get Top Cash back) and on the same day requested a Mac Key from Plusnet, the whole process could have been quicker, although after this call my Technicolor TG799VN V2 fibre router promptly arrived 2 days later.

When I requested a Mac from Plusnet they offered to match SSE deal, but not the £126 Top Cash back. That alone plus the prospect of a better router was the reason it was worth going for it. Plus after 2 years you can always go back, take advantage of the new customer deals and get another brand new router.

Just to day SSE failed to track on Top Cash back so one week after signing up online have pursued this.

My observations of SSE's customer service so far is. Call handler's sound professional, polite, articulate and slightly more mature than the norm. However they themselves do not appear to be technically trained as they put you on hold where presumably during this time they ate talking to the tech person.

Also any communication during the sign up process via email and SMS is non existent.

I will be monitoring speed comparison's with Plusnet's once connected.

What I would say about Plusnet's fibre speed is this. I signed up to their fibre within 48 hours of my local phone cabinet being fibre enabled. This meant I was amongst the very first in my neighbourhood to have fibre and was enjoying speeds of 33/6. Over the last 3 years that's dropped to around 23/4.5 as presumably the contention ratios have increased over time.

Hope this helps.

I work on this project and while I can't comment on other peoples handling of your situation, you shouldn't need an engineer visit from my understanding if you already have FTTC installed inside the property.. It's not our department who deal with the other side of things such as arranging with openreach but it's quite frustrating when people aren't doing all they can.. Who did you speak to about the fibre installation? We can add notes to back office informing them FTTC is already installed I've been told that the install can then be skipped but that's just from what ive been told by seniors.. As for sms I know when we place the sale we can enter details to keep you updated via sms.. Unsure about the online process also as this was online I can only hope that's why we can't say FTTC is already installed.. But either way you shouldn't need a visit unless I'm missing something.. I fortunately have experience in the processes from another company but i don't think that's the same for everyone, although we are trained mainly around treating customers well and like family as cliche as it sounds. If there's anything I can do to help feel free to pm me.. Or I can give you my extension number.. as for the router I've had a look and a feel of it and while it will do the job it isn't the best.. You can use another router obviously but we wouldn't be able to give you support for that product should you ever have a tech fault.
preecey
25 May 15 #138
Judging from this comment alone I must say you deserve a more senior job to what you already do. Not many other staff members would go out of their way to help customers outside of work like you do.

i too had the same problem told an engineer would be needed even after telling them 4 or 5 times that i already had fiber installed , recieved router and plugged in when services stopped at midnight and went live
had to call again to cancel engineer or i would have been billed for a missed callout
Cotch85 to turner brown
26 May 15 #141
See I would hope that in these cases you wouldn't be charged I would personally fight for my customer if this was the case. The engineer visit isn't needed so you shouldn't be charged.. These people you speak to about no engineer visit do you know their department? Because I think I will raise this issue when I'm next in work..

Escalation Resolution Team after customer service and both said that is was open reach telling them that and had checked with the broadband team
TheHun6
29 May 15 #143
Well the SSE broadband was finally connected yesterday. I've used Speednet to check download speeds at different times of the day and it has been consistently at around 32mbps bearing in mind my fibre cabinet is about 1km away with steel rather than copper cabling to the premises.

With Plusnet this was about the best speed I was achieving and appears to be more heavily traffic managed than SSE as during peak periods the download speeds were often considerably lower than this.

Only issue I have been having is with the Technicolor router. Apparently the settings can be changed so it can operate without the need of the white BT Open reach modem, but I can't get this to work as yet. May give the Tech team a call.

All in all I'm glad I took the plunge.
Cotch85 to TheHun6
30 May 15 #144
Yeah I've touched and felt the router but not seen it in working but it feels pretty standard cheap free.. I advise customers you can change the router just we can't give you tech support on the new router for obvious reasons. Don't see why you can't use another router

I signed up for SSE Talk and Broadband on 3rd May... Still waiting for my phone to be transferred.

The guys on the phone are nice, but there service is seriously lacking in communication.
I didn't hear back until 10 days after signing up when I received the agreement. The next letter I received was on the 2nd June saying that they had been unable to transfer my phoneline as it has a voicemail setting. Now, I've been put back into the queue for phone transfer... not happy with this timescale!

dragon2611 to turner brown
19 Jun 15 #155
Explain why this is a problem?,
It's an UPTO 80Mbit/s line not an 80Mbit/s line

Now if you had said 6Mbit/s on an 80Mbit/s sync then maybe I'd understand but 60 is still reasonable for an 80Mbit/s service

as i had 78 meg from all other fiber providers

dragon2611
20 Jun 15 #160
It's the same MSAN regardless of who you get the service from, only thing that I can think of that would make a difference is if they've give your a combo vdsl modem/router rather than having the seperate openreach modem.
turner brown
20 Jun 15 #161
nope tried 2 openreach modems and none get above 60 meg the open reach engineer even left me the other one
dragon2611 to turner brown
20 Jun 15 #162
Weird, unless it's the G.INP roll out if that gets turned on with a modem that doesn't support it you lose around 8Mbit/s and get extra latency due to the interleaving.

Mine dropped from ~78 when it was installed to > 70 and it seems DLM has changed it's mind yet again as I have 77Mbit/s today about about 8ms less latency.

This is with Plusnet but the underlying FTTC kit is openreach's just like pretty much everyone else deploying FTTC

I have ordered online, called to track the progress was informed that order would come on the system in 2 to 3 days. Also they couldn't make changes until then as I wanted to inform that the existing line would require to be activated.
Interestingly no order no in email which I received as order confirmation.
Bit worried where is the order gone and delays may happen. no one knows after 2 days and unsure how will they proceed

We ordered the top spec package for my uncle last night - the £24.50 per month deal and I see it's tracked this morning on TopCash at £126 - expected payout date in 21 weeks time.

I'm tempted to switch ourselves as well. but SSE are such an unknown quantity.
Wasn't such a risk for my uncle as his ADSL speeds are just awful to begin with, initially just 800 kb/s - Then after we did the Bell Wire Trick (Google it) - went to about 2mb/s and he hardly uses his landline - mostly uses his mobile phone, so has less to loose if there's any delays in switching the phone or internet.

Thought I'd feedback on here after finally getting my issues resolved with SSE. My order was initially cancelled in error (probably as I left them for gas and electricity just a week before ordering). Eventually got around to talking to customer services and have to say they've been excellent. All UK call centres and guys who genuinely seem to care. It took a little while to get up and running but they offered to refund the difference between my contract and what I was paying on bt while the issue got resolved. They also promised the tcb would be approved and to my surprise they have honoured it this week (£120) It has taken a bit of sorting but this was a true test of the customer service and can only say positive things.

you should probably be using a vpn. If you did then your isp could not block anything. I use "private internet access" and I'll carry on using them because their android app just got per app routing and has a kill switch to stop leaks if the connection drops. there are lots of options http://lifehacker.com/5935863/five-best-vpn-service-providers.
