love the "doubles as a mouse mat" nonsense
think every shop should market every item that has a flat surface larger than, say 15cm square, as 'doubles as mouse mat'
tin of biscuits - doubles as mouse mat!
large box of tampons - doubles as mouse mat!
etc..

my dad uses CAD on his laptop - is this type of thing good for that?

Normally a mouse is much more 'precise' than a graphics tablet like this for CAD work. I think this will probably be more of a necessity than an essential, but at this price might be a nice addition to his setup.

useless for anything but a bit of fun, cad needs a quality A4 tablet
good deal for £20 but its just a toy

You need to be looking into the 100's for getting into a reasonable quality. Im an architecture student and we have a range of these in the studio from £50-over £1000, quality varies greatly but nothing can replace sketching with the pen and paper.

Depends, if he's working with graphics and colours with odd shapes, then a tablet is what he would be using.
However lines/mapping and orthogonal views don't really need a tablet.

Can you use this to put a digital signature on a word document?

Yes but you would need to save the signature as a JPEG or such like image then insert the image whenever you need it. You cannot freehand write on something like Microsoft Office Word.

Or just take a photo of your signature and edit it a little to clean up the white background.
I put a macro on my dad's pc before which loaded his signature onto the clipboard so he could put his sig anywhere. Nothing special but saved a few clicks loading up clipboard etc each time!

Not an ideal solution but Insert->Object->Bitmap image then draw what you want. Given that it's a signature, you'd want to do it once and save it as a file for embedding.

Hi my 13 year old son is interested in graphics and hopes to take it as a GCSE next year. He also wants to be a game designer would this be any good for him? or should I get one of those bamboo ones? don't want to spend money needlessly and this is less that half the price of other ones.

The cheap Bamboo ones are excellent - I have a Trust tablet which was twenty something quid and it is ok, I reckon this one will be similar. The Bamboo just feels so much better made. Just bought 10 of them for my school.
