Does the bike charge the battery when you peddle? or is it a matter of plugging into the socket?

Plug into socket. there are only a couple of bikes that use regenerative braking (not that successfully from what I understand)

Tesco are selling the meerkat metro for £350 though it only has 24km range
I would consider buying one - has anyone actually got one?
Actually never mind, they are a sports hq affilite.

Seems like a good deal if you are in need of a commuting solution and perhaps not able to pedal. I prefer to do all the pedalling though, better for fitness.
