Yup good recommendation, for those who want to 'dip their toes' in without getting overloaded don't forget The Red badge of Courage by Stephen Crane (1895). Its based on veterans accounts of their civil war experiences and is fictionalised by Mr Crane perfectly describing an unnamed civil war battle and in particular an 18 year old youth about to encounter his first battle.
The 1951 film has Americas WWII hero Audie Murphy playing the part of the youth the battle scenes are well done and give the viewer a first person view of what the fighting was like for participants in the American Civil War.

If you want credibility I recommend "Battle Cry of Freedom". The best single volume book on the civil war.

Thanks op! The Ken Burns The Civil War documentary certainly interested me way back however it does focus to much on the civil war in the East. The civil war in the west was largely ignored if anyone wants further reading you can't go wrong with Shelby Foote's The Civil War a narrative. Although a Southerner Shelby does a good job over the trilogy of bringing the tradegy of the war in a way that your average reader can make sense of.

Shelby Foote is a name I've heard several times before in the past but don't believe I've read any of his work.

Ken Buns?
Yeah Ken Burns landmark documentary series I haven't watched for nearly 20 years. It was being shown on BBC 2 every morning late 90's so recorded everyone and watched in the evenings. I fit them all on two tapes. Very tempted to get the boxes out the attic and watch again. Wonder what the quality would be like.
No need. All on youtube. (popcorn)

"The Life Of Uncle Billy"
It's a fascinating story, actually. He was born with extra-long genitalia, which reached an almost unbelievable 10 feet long in adulthood.
His world came crashing down however, the fateful day he decided to put it through the letterbox of his neighbour's house, who understandably mistook it for a serpant of some sort. In an attempt at self-defence she grabbed the nearest thing to hand- a garden rake that was inexplicably indoors at the time, and attacked the 'creature', severing Uncle Billy's impressive appendage completely, and removing 3'8" from the end, leaving him with a nonetheless impressive 6'4.
