Yes - it's really quite obvious when it's explained to you and you see how every one of their warehouses drives efficiencies.
It can be as simple as running out of the small boxes on one line, or a specific sized space left in a cage.
There's always a valid reason, despite how daft it seems.

I hope we are not going to have a spate of people posting every free tour around a factory or warehouse they see (the Triumph motorcycle factory at Hinkley would be much more interesting than this one, but it would be equally daft to post it here).

Why would it be daft? It's a freebie and I certainly didn't know it existed (talking about the triumph tour here).
There's relatively few freebies posted anyway, I'm sure those not interested could cope with parsing through a few free tours.

You should post instead of bringing attitude. Some people wouldn't know warehouse or similar tours are available for free. Could be a fun trip if you're nearby. Kids would find this interesting and it's an intro into the world of work, learn how things are processed. I'd take my Brownie group if it was local.

Perhaps you are right - but I can't help thinking that a free tour around a warehouse should be listed as information rather than as a hot deal.
The Triumph tours are free - but organised via the dealer network - every now and then when they have enough interest. I went on one years ago (at the old building that burned down - which shows how long ago that was) and it was a really good day out (but of course everyone was of a like mind and had a Triumph - or their dad/mum owned one).

Whilst it does sound like a "box factory" tour, I went round a modern warehouse once, it was very interesting and all automated, etc. If I was a little closer I'd definitely take a look around.

I used to work at TNT for their IT function (We had an entire building of a few hundred staff dedicated to IT) Any how, we got to see how their shipping stuff worked. It was actually quite interesting

I have seen inside one of their main sorting hubs on a business trip, Atherstone I think it is. Technology integration. Kind of reminded me a bit of a coal mine I also once went down. It was pretty good and useful.
I can understand why some particular managers might find this kind of trip useful for sure, don't think kids would be too interested though lol
