I was thinking of playing Mass Effect 3 again before the release of the new game so thought I'd check out the price, original game is unavailable but the directors cut is currently free on Xbox Marketplace

The directors cut was the chunk of dlc to change the ending to be more appealing.
it's not the full game and as such can only be ran with the game.
not really sure the effort was worth it but it was nice of bioware to try something.

Can't find 'Directors Cut', but there is an 'Extended Cut' ?

This game got massive criticism for how sloppy and terrible the ending was, and how your choices over the 3 games didn't matter at all. In response to this, Bioware decided to release an extended cut ending, which is a sort of slideshow when you finish the game telling you about what ended up happening to certain characters, etc.
This isn't the game itself, its just the ending story dlc. This has ALWAYS been and always will be, free. Its just attempting to fix what was busted in the first place.

As ME3 is backwards compatible for XB1, are DLC's applied as well?

Just had a look and they are all there... some are free and others paid for, if you owned before you get them for free yes...
