If you receive payments under the War Pensions Scheme, or Guaranteed Income Payment under the Armed Forces Compensation Schemes, you may be eligible for concessionary travel.
With a Veterans Oyster photocard you can travel free on bus, Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail and most National Rail services in London.
Totally agree, veterans should get this and more. If you've given of yourself for this country then you and your immediate family should be entitled to a higher level of service on transport and hospitals too.
And no, I'm not a veteran...just feel they deserve better treatment.

Veterans deserve so much more than they get, considering the sacrifices they make to protect us and our freedom. This sort of thing is the least we can give them.
And no, I am not in the military, but have the utmost respect for those that are or have been.

It is not a question of believing in or liking war.
But it is a sad, tragic and unfortunately real fact of life that even in today's modern enlightened world, there are those from the extremes of the political left and right and from extremist religious groups, that wish to 'take over the world' against the will of the majority. This is done by waging war on us, and not always in the 'traditional' way but more and more in underhand, dirty and sacrificial ways with no respect for life or property.
There are then also various natural disasters and other unfortunate events in the world.
To cope with all these, the only viable way is to have well trained, well disciplined well equipped Armed forces to defend us, fight for us, save us and deal with these other events with the utmost of professionalism, courage and strength.
However, in doing this those in the Armed forces face constant real danger and threat to their lives and health, in a way no other job does. To this end, we should all be indebted to them, as they are the ones that truly and unfortunately make the ultimate sacrifice for all of our good.
For that, we should at least allow them a few extras like free transport to show our gratitude for what they do for us.

Do you have a War pension or Guaranteed Income Payment under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme.
I don't qualify myself, I was deployed for the 1st Gulf war.

It just out of interest, do veterans not get an info booklet containing all this information on offers etc when they are discharged? Would seem foolish to invest in such schemes and then leave them searching out themselves....

This is the important bit: So to qualify for free travel you not only have to be a veteran but you also have to be receiving either a service medical pension or regular payments relating to a service-related medical condition.
