I posted this originally as a deal but it got moved to misc, however, since things are often missed there I have just included freebies for over 60’s in this post.
The in-laws are turning 60 soon and were not aware of some of the discounts available to them so in case others do not know or just need a reminder I have compiled a few. These are discount cards and passes you can obtain for free if you are older.
B&Q – 10% off on Wednesdays with card free for over 60’s. You need to apply for a free B&Q club card (formally separate as a diamond card) details on their website http://www.diy.com/diy/diamond-club/ currently when applying you get a voucher for £5 off a £50 shop if you are new to the B&Q club.
Free bus pass – Free but the age requirement varies, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland it is 60 and for England it is female state pension age (regardless of gender). Free off-peak travel 9:30am – 11pm Monday-Friday and all day on weekends. https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-elderly-person-bus-pass
60+ London Oyster – Free but you need to live in a London Borough. This is for people who do not qualify for a freedom pass. Gives you free travel around the capital, restrictions may apply such as after 9:30am, for you and up to four under-11’s on some services. More information and how to apply https://tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/adult-discounts-and-concessions/60-london-oyster also gives discount on river services and Emirates Airline.
Passport – Free need to be born before 1929 but can apply for a refund from 2004 onwards https://www.gov.uk/free-passport.
TV Licence – Free for over 75’s discount if 74 http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/for-your-home/aged-74-and-over-aud3.
Boots – Free over 60’s advantage card, benefits such as 10 points per £1 (instead of 4 points) and 25% off glasses at Boots Opticians http://www.boots.com/en/Over-60s/.
Wyevale Garden Centres – Free to join you can get double points on Tuesdays with your over 60’s gardening club members’ card http://www.wyevalegardencentres.co.uk/the-garden-club.
Merseyside Travel Card – over 60’s free travel on buses, trains and Mersey ferry services if you live in Merseyside after 9:30 Monday-Friday and all day on weekends and bank holidays http://www.merseytravel.gov.uk/tickets/concessions/pages/60+.aspx.

NHS Prescriptions - Free prescriptions for the over 60's just tick the box on the back of your NHS prescription. This also extends to "minor ailments" which means you can get some OTC medicines free from participating pharmacies but this is area specific http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcosts/Pages/Prescriptioncosts.aspx.
There are many other attractions that do 60+ discounts or free access (occasionally 50+) such as gyms, swimming pools, cinemas, theatres, theme parks, football club memberships, insurance and restaurants and so it is always worth carrying proof of age e.g. a driving licence and asking for any discounts, just like the students.

Totally forgot about prescriptions. There is also a scheme called "minor ailments" where you can go to your normal pharmacy and you can get over the counter medicines free too (this is not only for over 60's but everyone who get free meds). This varies between areas but very handy for the upcoming hay-fever season.

Odeon, vue and others do senior/silver screenings of movies for older people, from 55 @ £3 a ticket, as well as a cuppa and biscuits before the film starts for free.
Also, for any that are hard hearing, they offer induction loop necklaces for T mode on earing aids.

Thanks for taking the time to put all this together, I knew about the Railcard but not B&Q or Boots, and I'd totally forgotten about prescriptions as well, though I hope I don't need that one!

It seems any age person can go and it is still £3. I took my 18yrs daughter yesterday. Not run in school holidays though. I find the afternoons are less crowded.

Yes, I went with daughter (19) and hubby (55+) recently to see Star Wars at Odeon. Another couple of families there too. It's a good deal - and the coffee was ok!

Free bus pass – for 60 only in London (thanks to Ken Livingstone) and Merseyside plus other local schemes, Scotland, Ireland and Wales BUT not for the rest of England, why or why, yes, it was the privatisation of the buses?!

I get what you mean, I didn't realise this until researching. If you're turning 60 this year, as it stands, you have to wait until 2020 to get your bus pass according to the government website, if you are in England.
I just used the on-line calculator they provided, didn't think it added up as that would make state pension age 64 for women. Although not entirely sure what it actually is as there are different levels. That's a good chart you've posted there, much more clear than the government website.

London 60+ Oyster cost £20, at 65 you get the Older Person Freedom Pass. But at 60, you have to pay £20 if you want it then. But there are great advantages of free travel if you're a regular TfL user.
The SCU M BBC decided to use millionaires to plead with over 75's to continue paying for their licence, how else will Fiona Bruce get her £800k if not from those with pennies to live on each week.

Gutted that I can't have either my pension or a bus pass. How long before they take away the free prescriptions too?
