As it says on the tin, if your up to your free Dropbox limit and looking for a half decent alternative I've been using this for a while now and it's pretty good.

I'm still trying to find a better deal for a bit more space, but 50gb should cover a good chunk of most people's family photo and video catalogues. Pretty good industry reviews all around, as long as you don't lose your key ;) top tip. Keep the key safe!

I would suspect the cost of trying to hack everyone's encrypted data only to find a few photo's and the odd movie would be prohibitive, depending on what type of encryption algorithm they use and how strong the passwords are etc. Even breaking an 128-bit AES is pretty time consuming, unless of course you believe in the back door conspiracy theories? (Not sure what I believe about that?)

I didn't give anyone stick. I just said I lost a lot of data using this. I didn't say it was theirs or anyone elses fault. I am to blame for the loss of password however, I have no control over their customer service. Which was poor at best. I've used Dropbox and other apps (offering less data, granted) and had a much better experience. Both service wise and support wise.

makes you wonder what happens to everyone's days once these sites close down. do they sell the servers? is the data really erased to the extent it is unrecoverable?

I also registered years ago, back when they first launched. From what I can remember, they were quite clear then about not being able to access your data.

It is entirely fair for them to advise you of how they work and for you to take or leave it. However, it's probably not fair to give them stick because you lost your password.

5 May 16 #42
You don't need to remember the passwords, if use a password manager i.e. KeyPass.
All you need to remember is one master password to unlock the software.

About 6 weeks. Photo's, it doesn't matter if they already exist. You still get a point for adding your own. Even adding historical pictures you took, just add them to place. I have one picture taken in the hotel on my hols in Florida last year with over 107,000 views. You get monthly reports on how your pics are trending.
Correcting local businesses who may have changed names / closed down. Adding websites, opening times etc.. All count.
ATM's are easy points. Many in my area weren't mapped on google maps or were in wrong locations.
Adding public footpaths using google map maker is also easy, but can take weeks before someone validates your edit.

I registered my account years ago. When I did it there was no mention of encryption keys and also no mention of the lack of recovery process for forgotten passwords. Under the assumption that other data storage sites can reset the password I thought this would be the same. I only lost photo's, nothing major. The biggest issue for me was the awful customer support. I'm guessing the fact that they now mention this on a welcome page and many other areas indicates other people have had the same issue with losing passwords.

In a digital era where you need a password for almost everything and the fact that it cannot be reset is so out of date it makes the risk of losing data too high. Making this app non usable for me. I have a terrible memory, too many passwords and will not write them down. So yeah, partially my fault. Partially Mega's poor customer service.

How long did that take you? Most things around me seem to be already mapped and photographed.
mudisoft
5 May 16 #38
yes, but what of the videos?
Astec123
5 May 16 2 #37
Err that's entirely your fault. Due to the way the system works if you loose your password or don't save the encryption key file then there is no way anyone can gain access to your account for you, from Mega, the government or otherwise.

They spell this out on the registration page, in the welcome email among other places.

kimdotcom the founder seems to think mega is going to go under due to mismanagement by the new owners so I've decided to look elsewhere I've had a account with mega for a while but I decided to move my stuff to another cloud storage provider I think it was posted on here pcloud also if you have BT broadband you get storage free with that.

Currently using 1TB on google drive. If you join their 'Local Guides' and do 200 points of contributions (photos, reviews, google map edits etc..) you get it free for two years.

Agreed, re: best of a bad bunch. It's all a matter of "who did what before the law caught up with them" IMO. It could be argued that Microsoft had an equally questionable start in life and is probably just as likely to have back doors into your data as the next company. If anything, dependent on what your trying to store some might say MS is the least secure of the lot. But then again, if you have nothing to hide who cares. Etc etc..

This is why i've never used my Mega account as I don't trust how it's changed hands and those behind it's ownership/funding. It claims everything you upload is encrypted and you hold the keys but I don't believe those who built it don't have a way in to your data.

I use Onedrive with it's 2 step verification as it's integrated into the OS and i've got 40gb free with MS though various promotions etc. New requests to access my data are immediately flagged up by an app on my phone so as long as it's me accessing it from a new device I can authorise it but if it's not I can decline it. I quite like that safety net and so far not had any suspicious notifications.

However it's all a case of which provider is the best of a bad bunch when it comes to trusting anyone and just how secure your data really is.

When you use these cloud backup services you should be cautious about who has control over your data -

I've just started using BitTorrent Sync. It has been pretty good so far. Your folders are saved on a PC and as long as the PC is on, you can upload/download to the folders from anywhere. Might be worth a look?

What other free could storage options are people using (in this case I'm looking specifically at Android, but cross platform would be the best option for me)? I vaguely remember getting the 50gb Box offer, so that's an option.

I'm currently using Shoebox as a quick option for backing up the photo's on my phone, but when I travel I'll be shooting RAW on my camera and transferring the pics to my phone (that 128gb miro sd card will get some use!) to see about slowly uploading them if I can find a solid wifi connection, so things like Shoebox and Google Photo's are a no-go as they won't allow me to upload RAW. (I'll probably still upload the low res. embedded jpegs from the RAW files whenever I get wifi, so that if something happens while I'm waiting for a good connection, I have some kind of backup).

Also, any suggestions on forums to use for Android/Windows discussions? (I use xda, but only for techy solutions, things like these requests are a little "below" the member on there is seems!:smirk:)

If you have a favourite password that you can REMEMBER, just use it twice. The security against a brute force or dictionary attack is no worse, and you can still remember it. And it is longer, so this service will probably not say that it is weak. Get to over 20 characters and you should be fine. (I am assuming that "this service" is Mega, but it doesn't actually say that in the title!)
You use abracadabra23 now
Use abracadabra23abracadabra23 for Mega.

Anyway P-Cloud been ok for me so far no complaints.

No worries. Just tempted me to sign up for that as well to mirror my mega storage but 20gb isn't enough for me.

I take it you rate P-Upload generally? What's the upload speeds like? If it's similar to Mega I'll have to keep an eye out for a deal like you got.

The sync app is quite useful I have found, allows me to keep my laptop files and other bits to hand even on a mobile. By far and away the best overall free online storage option in my opinion and I've tried a few. Also helps that it's one of the largest offerings of free capacity. Just a shame they don't have more low end storage tiers as I'd be happy with 100-200gb of space without the need for the file sharing aspect beyond between my own systems.

Used it for a while, not had any issues that were no my own fault.

I keep copies of thousands of practise photos and other non-essentials there, still learning to use my camera properly..! and .. 100% agreed too the point above. Diversify your storage. Has been pretty good for me though, so can't moan.

Yes, I've seen that article, and in my opinion it very much depends on which side of the thin line you sit. I think the final paragraph quoted response from the chairman is probably as factually incorrect as the majority of the article, but at the end of the day, if you treat the commodity for what it is, you should be okay. Just go into it with your eyes open and don't store the Crown Jewels there, etc etc..

^^^^^^^^Just something to be aware of. I love Mega and use it to back up a lot of my files, be wary though. I lost alot of precious stuff when Firedrive (another cloud storage provider) just disappeared of the face of the earth without a word. Don't rely one just one place of storage
