Found that due to the success of the last 'free' car park weekender, Manchester City Council is continuing this although this time it is restricted to certain parts of Manchester City Centre ( never knew there was zones).
- FREE PARKING is on from mid day in zones 3 and 4 during the weekends of January 9-10; 16-17; 23-24 and 30-31 only on on-street metered bays (stickers will be attached to the machines next to the bays where the free parking is applicable to).
Zone Three includes the areas within the borders of Liverpool Road, Water Street, Mancunian Way, A56/Deansgate, Whitworth Street West, Cambridge Street, Mancunian Way and Princess Street.
Zone Four includes the areas within the borders of the A56/Deansgate, Whitworth Street West, Cambridge Street, Mancunian Way, Ducie Street/Laystall Street, Great Ancoats Street, Piccadilly/London Road and Travis Street.
NCP are offering discounted parking throughout January in their off street car parks. Details can be found at http://www.ncp.co.uk/parking-solutions/manchester-parking-for-only-6-pounds.
It's a pity the council can't also thank the people using public transport in a similar way. Maybe by putting a few notices up on affected bus stops for a start. Manchester City Council make a cock up of so many things. Our transport system is a mess. Thanks for the post for the car users though Leer.

Newcastle - Upon - Tyne has free parking in the city centre from 5.00 pm:
"There has been a major permanent transformation of Newcastle as the city stays open “Alive after Five”. Since October 2010, Alive after Five has introduced permanent late night opening with shops open until 8pm weekdays and 7pm Saturdays in Newcastle City Centre with thousands of free parking spaces.
*Park for free after 5pm in 7 Newcastle City Council car parks Monday to Saturday. Shop late til 8pm weekdays and 7pm Saturdays.". Which is a good idea to encourage shoppers etc to spend money in the city centre.

Your car may still be where you left it but with all the DRUNKENESS and ROWDIEISM in Newcastle it may not be in the same state you left it. NOT a place to be in on a weekend at night times.

Too late Trafford Centre stole their customers years ago. All the City Centre is good for is getting mugged, feeding pigeons or watching a chavs having a fight.
