How does this compare with other free music making apps? Anyone know?

No one knows what you want, it is horses for courses, you are the workhorse for yourself when it comes to these technical tools.

Put it simply, if you're not into Ableton and other "modern" GUIs, you'll love this. It is highly intuitive and has enough to cover the needs of semi-serious users. If you like cramming loops with predefined melodies for quick DJ-like bpm-paste-ups, then there are probably better apps out there. This is a proper creative tool for composition, editing, mixing and production. And most importantly, it never crashes, never glitches.

Very hot, got 4.5 score out of 5 from Musicradar.com, used it once before, older version, very good stuff, but really down to what one's familiar with as interfaces are so different between these similar products.

FYI: Remember though if you want to try this and use 3rd Party Plug-ins, they won't work with the free version and no support for third-party sample libraries but good SW to try if you've never dabbled before. (Also good for experienced users)

So you can't import your own samples at all? What use is the free version then, apart from "try before you buy"?

If you want a sort of free type thing that you can use vsts with then check out reaper.fm - its got a trial that you can dismiss and carry on using. I bought my copy for £60 a few years ago as i like to support good software

Of course you can. It doesn't take 3rd party plugins, meaning other vendor effects and instruments but everything else is there.
