Historic Scotland are offering free tickets for lots of cool places in Scotland, including Edinburgh, Stirling and Urquhart Castle. It's free but you need to book tickets in advance (server seems to be very slow at the moment but I guess it's all about perseverance :P)
Tickets are valid on St Andrew's Weekend, the last weekend of November.
"Book your tickets here for as many of Historic Scotland's stunning attractions as you'd like. And it won't cost you a penny. Just pick which sites you want to visit over St Andrew's weekend, print your tickets and enjoy a great day out for up to two adults and three children per visit. But don't delay. Ticket Giveaway closes at 5pm on Friday 27th November. You will not be able to apply for tickets after this time."

As usual their web site crashed under the load (will they ever learn) but I eventually managed to get tickets for Edinburgh Castle. Went to Stirling Castle last year.
I certainly wouldn't be paying the standard £52.50 for 2 adults and 2 kids at Edinburgh.
Hopefully it won't rain this time. :-)

That's my understanding as well - it's an annual thing, been on the go for years. Previously, I've just turned up without pre-booking.
