I love when Samsung released update that completed life of my long loved pristine condition note 4. Lol if nothing goes wrong with your device then manufacturers will make sure it will.

For us looking at these sort of phone's it wouldn't matter if they had malware or not! There's nothing to steal from us poor fool's anyway!! Lol

But apparently a good 720p can be better than a poor 1080p , the problem is how can you tell pre-purchase which you're going to get . I have read a few things along these lines : ' the 720-line format on a display this size implies a resolution of 267 PPI; at the viewing distances you’ll normally be using for a smartphone, that’s getting very close (not quite there, but close) to the limit of human visual acuity anyway; for most content, and certainly for social media and YouTube videos ' So visually we don't really need more than 720 ( on 5.5 , just ), it's better for battery life and probably speed too . But there's something ' better ' so it's inadequate ( guilty of this myself , never let facts get in the way of a good prejudice . Most of us probably have 1080 TVs , some are even 720 , consider the size of those screens .

I've had 5 Chinese phones. 1 Ulefone Power that was returned after 3 months as the digitiser failed. Eventually got full refund.I had an LETV Le 1 Pro that did have malware on it and eventually had to reflash ROM with CM12 - was a great piece of Snap 820 based 2K screen phone. And three Xiaomis. One had a custom ROM pre installed, it had malware. One had the digitiser die about 12 months in

Sometimes PUPs are seen as malware.

It really is caveat emptor. If you have some technical knowledge you can pick up a bargain. But it's never the same degree of buyers security as a UK phone.

I almost bought this then found the resolution in the specs ( 1280*720 pixels ). Thats too low for me these days.

Id take 1920x1080 as a minimum.

Better camera than my Redmi Note 4X though. (I've got the non-sony camera version)

I didn’t want to get drawn into this again but I searched and noticed the Ulefone official forums where people were complaining have mysteriously gone offline so I went to the Google cached copy and found this (one of many):
webcache.googleusercontent.com/sea…tml

I guess if you know there is malware present and are capable of rooting and removing it then it’s not such a big deal, I was just annoyed I gave a phone to my mum from a brand I formerly trusted to be let down.

I use AVG Free and Kaspersky Internet Security to scan the phone - annoying the free versions nag you with ads.

I’d probably recommend a Xiaomi from a legit source or a Motorola G series from the UK if you’re after value (who isn’t)!

I have a Ulefone - Be Touch 2 - from Summer 2015. Nice phone but it NEVER was as advertised.

Was meant to be delivered with Android 5.1, but actually came with 5.0 labelled as "5.1" and a flawed one - eg WiFi was incredibly flakey - and only after a few months did they do an OTA update on, and still really 5.0 - Android Build ID LRX21M.
source.android.com/sou…ers

That was it - never any further maintainance at all over the last 2 years.

So while I found the hardware a bargain at the time, I could never trust Ulefone again either to be truthful, or to provide any ongoing software.

Don't get sucked in, Ulefone are awful. Will never forget the Ulefone Paris fault ridden, poorly made phone. Has been a whilel so maybe they've cleaned up their act but bezeless just means the screen is only held down with glue and will get damaged very easily.

Gotta agree about Xioami , had mine a few months and its easily the best phone I have ever had, as said buy from a known seller and get the global rom and sealed box and you are fine, I have the Redmi note 4 from a deal on here, fantastic battery life , first phone I don't charge every night, 2 days heavy use and and amazing 4 days of light use....

Ulefone Power 2 user here for the past 6 weeks and must admit it's a great phone for the price I paid. My only gripe was Bluetooth dropping but I've since discovered a Rom update which seems to have solved the problem. The screen issue mentioned for the Power 1 seems OK. I've came from an Elephone P8000 which worked fine until the battery died (or I'd still be using it.)

We've had several cheap Chinese phones, all decent bang for the buck. My experience is positive all round but my advice would be stick to the bigger selling phones as the more sales they have, the more likely they will have updates. The Elephone P8000 got an update out of the box, then several minor updates and then no updates for the past year despite me still having a few minor niggles.

You take the risk but you will get a flagship phone for a fraction of the high street price when you buy these phones.

Thank you - at least I'm not alone in my sentiments and opinion (that has genuinely been first hand).

Picked up the UMIDIGI Crystal 4/64 for this price on pre-order.
Only bought it (before reviews) because I had an UMIDIGI Super and never had a problem with it til I dropped it from far too high onto something far too hard.

I can honestly say it's not a bad phone, not at all, but you do get what you pay for (and now it's retailing for £20 more).
The camera is as bad as any cheap chinese phone, and I really miss a physical home button but it's an unlocked 4g handset with decent memory and storage for around £100.

It will never match up to an offering from xiaomi / huawei / oneplusone / google / samsung / etc. But that's ok, I don't need it to. I just need a cheap phone that works until my clumsy ass drops it too hard again (which I will).

At then end of the day if you trust the brand enough then you may be willing to jump on board early, otherwise look for someone you trust to do a review. I tend to watch s7yler on youtube, and having owned my phone would agree with most of his findings (except the lag as he reviewed the cheaper 2/16 model)

I put Ronald McDonald in and it comes up with millions of results what's your point. This is not a direct correlation to how many people have signal problem s in BOTH sides. I am quite resourceful I would use one side for network if one radio broke. If both broke I would use a dongle and csipsimple there are ways to use this phone.heck I would sell it take a good hit and buy again the note 5 from the same MC Singapore buyer.

It is, when you take into account the vast numbers of Xiaomii phones sold, with just a few hundred failing. I'm speaking about statistics. Phones develop issues and fail. Some specific handsets have genetic faults for certain production runs.

Yes, LG and Samsung phones are covered under warranty, but the ones I mentioned were also flagship phones costing 5-8 times the price of phones like this! I've been looking at threads for the Xiaomi Note 3/4's on here and not once had I come across comments where people were agreeing that there was a massive issue across multiple units.
retrend
5 Oct 17 #46
Not really when you consider how many English speaking people there is with Xiaomi phones. Also failing after 8months would be warrantied on any of the brands you mention.

I'll not be bothering with them again, I'd rather have a warranty than be buying a new budget phone every 9months. I'd have even less faith in something like this deal here.

5 Oct 17 #44
If it's in the hundreds for an issue dating back 2 years then I'd say, statistically, that's pretty good going! Especially when compared to the huge numbers who had the well known issues with their LG G3/4's, the Samsung Note 4's etc (I was one of the many unlucky ones with a mobo failure on those).

I would advise you to be careful with this brand. Bought 2 Ulefone Power 4G smartphones last year and the screen stopped to respond in both of them after approx. 5-6 months. Then my friend has bought Ulefone Paris and the story was the same... Interesting thing is that all 3 phones developed a fault in the same place - a non-responsive row area in approx. 1/3 height of the screen.
Regarding to the Xiaomi, I would not put them into "Chinese bag" as they are becoming more global (even opening official stores in eastern Europe now). I have Xiamomi 4X and I can recommend that Xiaomi-price Samsung-performance phone

Bought 2 Ulefone Paris last year, worked fine but both suffered from a white screen spot in the lower part of the screen, seemed quite common. Had a couple of rom updates but that was it. Presumably this new one won't suffer the same issue.

It’s a good price but don’t get sucked in is my honest advice. I’ve bought cheap Chinese phones with great specs and my opinion after a while is that they’re ‘good’ but have critical flaws (e.g. slow/weak WiFi, unresponsive touchscreen, etc.) and after all that, they almost definitely have some kind of malware somewhere. This is why I’ve concluded that I just don’t mind paying more for a proper brand... I’m sure you can argue that Apple, Google, Samsung, Sony, all analyse your data but at least they ask whereas I’ve found malware hidden in the oddest places on these phones
woldranger to plewis00
4 Oct 17 #6
What about Xiaomi? They have a shed load of great phones out at the mo, and most seem a whole heap more stable and solid than your average "too good to be true" cheapie that pops up here.

As for this phone, the specs look really good for the money, but I've not bothered looking at any reviews as I'm not currently in the market for a new handset.

Don't forget TCB on this!
plewis00 to woldranger
4 Oct 17 #7
I don’t consider Xiaomi in the same league as ‘cheap Chinese phones’. I’d place them along with Oppo, OnePlus, etc. But there have been reported of cheap Xiaomi phones preloaded with malware from unscrupulous sellers so don’t automaassume it’s safe.
yeahbutitsnotfree to plewis00
4 Oct 17 #9

plewis00 to yeahbutitsnotfree
4 Oct 17 #10
Put the tin hat away. At least you can opt out of data sharing. If you genuinely believe that they (Apple and Samsung) are as bad as some of the cheap Chinese brands then you should probably ditch your smartphone and bury your online presence entirely, including HUKD. You can take reasonable precaution and, yes, I don’t think Samsung or Apple are doing half as much as those other brands like Oukitel, Ulefone, Doogee, etc. Otherwise it would be all over the internet already
yeahbutitsnotfree to plewis00
4 Oct 17 #11
Otherwise it would be all over the Internet? Have you heard yourself?
plewis00 to yeahbutitsnotfree
4 Oct 17 #13
If Apple and Samsung were blatantly loading phones with malware and viruses, someone much smarter than us would have blown it wide open by now. And if you honestly thought your data was at risk, you wouldn’t be debating it with me on a public forum. There is no big conspiracy theory.

So yes, I have ‘heard myself’ and FWIW I have found malware first-hand on a cheap Chinese phone (a Doogee X9 Pro most recently) and I have not ever found anything on my Sony Z5 or any of my iDevices.

You were slating oukitel yesterday, you never responded to my request for a link on that thread.
Are you going to continue slating phones you have not owned or have any knowledge of just because you allegedly found something on a phone once?
plewis00 to shadey12
5 Oct 17 #20
It’s just like people demanding receipts in Tesco threads... I have owned them all, I could show you receipts or the actual phone or the virus scan but I don’t see why I should. Just Google it for yourself or see the reviews of these things on Amazon. I didn’t respond to you because your request wasn’t even a proper sentence and you could just have typed it into Google in seconds

It was an Oukitel Universe Tap.

And there’s your link - two for that exact phone but there’s more...:
amazon.co.uk/gp/…r=1
reddit.com/r/A…rd/

You should probably ask what possible agenda I could have for telling you this or maybe it’s the simple reason - which is that it’s the truth and I’d rather not see someone else fall foul of it. Caveat emptor

Looking at some of your previous comments, when did it all change,
32178743.jpg32178743.jpg32178743.jpg32178743.jpg
It seems strange. Less than 24 hours ago on a oukitel thread you mention a doogee you had problems with. Would it have not been more relevant to mention the 2 year old oukitel oukitel (just a thought)
32178743-0KS78.jpg
Contradictions everywhere.
Why have you been singing the praises of Chinese phones if you have had so many phones with problems and malware over the last few years, did you not want to warn people then?
It's easy to find a fault on a product using Google search.
Buyer beware or buyer beware of people making claims of owning numerous faulty phones and continuing to buy them.
plewis00 to shadey12
5 Oct 17 #25
It changed a few weeks ago after real world use and actually finding malware embedded in the ROM of a couple of phones and yes, the early comments were initial opinions and yes, I still buy from Banggood - but this is drones and tools not phones and I still recommend them.

I went back to the Doogee F9 Pro thread and reposted the other day, I also updated my reviews but I guess in your rather sad witch-hunt you glossed over that. Given the detail and energy you went to, I am surprised or maybe I’m not?

Search some of the threads on HUKD and you will find others corroborating the malware concerns independently. But it’s fine I won’t bother, would it be easier to say ‘I made it all up’, is that what you want? It’s certainly easier than trying to argue with someone that has nothing better to do in their existence than go through my old posts. I would just refer you back to my point before, what could I possibly stand to gain either way?

Of course, I see what you have to gain - according to your Oukitel K10000 Pro thread you bought one in the presale and used a Leegoo Shark before...

Not much of a search, I will take your comments the same as a certain member from London.
plewis00 to shadey12
5 Oct 17 #36
That’s good to know.

It wouldn’t have mattered what I said as you had your own agenda. If you had asked me to prove it, I might just have done what you asked.

You will still buy these budget phones and I will avoid them, admittedly having changed my opinion of them (which I never disputed) recently having experienced the bad side of this first hand. But as it’s a public forum the least you could do is be a decent human being and accept that your opinion may differ to mine. I think meticulously screenshotting my comments, uploading them and deconstructing it is pretty sad. The date I posted all this doesn’t contradict anything, I did go back and correct my Amazon review and I did go back and warn others what I’d found. I won’t bother in the future, it’s just a reminder why there are no winners on the internet.

Think that's more likely buying a phone from a seller on eBay. Open box chance to mess with the phone change rom. Xiaomi direct from China from a deal on here, they tend to be hot because of their existing customer base on hotukdeals and sellers people have good experiences off. Ebay I would only touch like a main store outlet argos for example.

There were stories of it happening with Banggood and GearBest too. But from an authorised reseller it should be fine. Google it if you’re not sure, lots of stuff on it. Xiaomi are good but they are quite a bit more than the other ‘Chinese brands’ too.

good price for an interesting phone, however id look at the reviews as this wont be for everyone, yeah the spec is good but the front camera placement takes some getting used to, its not true bezel-less though, almost but not full bezel-less.....

There are quite a few of this type of model made by others, usually under the Mix name ( Maze, Doogee etc ) seems this is the new standard for new tech phones from China... for this cash it may well be worth a punt though, screen is one of the better ones, the cheaper end are 720p screens that look awful....cameras seem to need software upgrades to preform best though..

How’d you figure that one, or is the explanation provided not sufficient. The fact that someone else who uses budget Chinese handsets spent ages trawling through my old posts? I found malware at a ROM level on more than one handset the other day, my opinion changed; I realised it wasn’t coincidence anymore and then I posted to warn people. Before that it was just what I’d heard.

Honestly, thought it was helpful, but HUKD and the internet has proved me wrong

5 Oct 17 #23
Isn't this problem solved by buying a slghtly older Chinese smartphone - one that has been out for several months - and going over to XDA Developers and downloading a custom made non-Chinese ROM onto it?

OK, a bit of hassle and you need to do some technical stuff... and need to really find the right ROM is available before you buy the phone.... but surely this is an option?
plewis00 to tawse57
5 Oct 17 #26
If they haven’t locked the bootloader. But yes, if you have the skills and ability to do this and the phone is capable then it would be a valid option, I believe Xiaomi handsets are open to this.

5 Oct 17 #22
I must admit I would stick with Xiaomi from a big reseller like MC from Singapore and I believe that there is no malware. I suppose these cheap Chinese brands sell the phones at a loss and recoup their money by adware with affiliate links in them as well as getting paid by the advertiser's. I just wish I had someone who could remove any malware and I would take a chance on doogee or leagoo at 50 but since I don't I'm happy to pay a 100 more for a 600 Snapdragon processor instead of a 400 with probably 4 GB ram instead of 3. You still get good value with the 'premium' Chinese brands

I met s couple who work in a company repairing phones and the I phones, especially the iPhone 5 s have their own box there are so many. The well know brands here all have their faults.
