can anyone see any other differences between this and the KD49XE7073SU? the later includes a 400Hz pannel for the same price

No TV has a 400hz panel, it's 'Motionflow 400hz' i.e. a slightly more aggressive motion interpolation option.
If you use those options it might be worth considering, otherwise it's just the same TV with a different coloured surround.

So for the same price which should I go for? I’m not a heavy tv user, just want an improvement from 8 yr old tv and low input lag.

It doesn't make any difference - just get the 7002 if you want the black surround and the 7073 if you want the silver surround. They're essentially identical. That "MotionFlow" value is just a number made up by Sony that's unrelated to the actual spec.
Every reviewer seems to turn this feature off anyway, so even if there is a minor difference in motion interpolation, chances are you won't be using it.
Watch out for the panels on these as well, it seems like the 43" and 49" are IPS (good viewing angles and bad black levels) whereas the 55" is VA which has the opposite properties. As you mentioned low input lag I'm assuming you're a gamer, so I'd get the IPS.

Damn its for my parents and for me occasionally when im around. My dad would rather have the lager screen, is it very noticeable for a non-tv phile?

The difference between IPS and VA would be noticeable to anyone, but it's a trade off - you're picking which drawbacks you prefer. The 55" with the VA panel will be a lot better for watching movies and for dark scenes if you're sitting in front of it, but don't buy it if you have a wide living room with people far to the side.
For gaming the difference isn't vast, I'd just slightly prefer IPS for the faster pixel response (less motion blur/trails on moving objects). All of the XE70s have excellent input lag regardless of size.

I think we would all like a "lager screen"

Is this any good for gaming or watching sport? Sorry for question but don't know anything about new technology. Could someone recommend a TV up to 50" and £700. Thanks

Im in a similar boat to you, and from what I can gather reading through the tv threads, it isn't so much that you can rely on one manufacturer any more. Gone are the days when you knew that Sony, or Philips, or whoever did the best tv. It is far more down to individual models. Im researching now, to purchase in mid January. Yes it's a bit of lead time, but I should have a good clue as to what I want by then.
Its it's not the answer you're looking for, but keep reading the threads, and comments and hopefully someone's can recommend something decent for you.

can you use these with a wireless keyboard? I've googled and still cant determine if it will work with a seperate keyboard.

Yes wireless keyboards work with these, I had a new Don't TV for two weeks and it worked with wireless keyboard, I now have a Samsung and that works with wireless keyboard as well.
Reason I only had it for six weeks was because it ended up with four dead pixels around the centre of screen but I think I was just unlucky.
