Was going to pick up one last week at £1 in Morrisons but thought..... If I buy one just now, will it last til another 3/4 weeks - will it not rot and get wrinkly/mouldy or something? Do pumpkins have dates on them.
Not expecting you to know the answers but just wondering!

Me too, I'm assuming that they'll be fine as long as you don't cut it open. They must be in shops for quite a while????
Morrisons has some really big ones for £1 and last year I left it too late and ended up with rubbish little ones.

Yes. Once you remove the insides, they start to dry out, which leads to them going wrinkly/mouldy. If they start to sag a little, you can rejuvenate them by soaking them in water, but that seems to only woke once or twice and them they rot. 4 weeks is a bit long to expect them to last, probably better to wait another few weeks if you only want to make one and have it last to Halloween

Just after halloween we got some free pumpkins and took wagers on how long it would take to collapse on itself. It lasted til June this year before we couldn't stand the sight of it anymore. Hope this helped with your buying decision.

Not sure how long they last prior to carving but after you carved have a read at this:
Who knew WD40 would keep a pumpkin from rotting! Good link

I'm growing butternut squashes at the moment and when I harvest them they should last until early next year. I can't see any reason why a pumpkin shouldn't last a month if it's not damaged, seeing as they're all cucurbitas

FYI: Yesterday local Morrisons had medium size at 75p, and large size (say "football") at £1.50. Not sure re keeping powers - a few in the containers were already rotting away!

Bit concerning though that a pumkin that takes ages to grow is 50p and a piece of plastic tat is double the price.

Because I grow pumpkins in my garden, of course 50p is a great price, but I need to use mine up first lol

Pumpkins are great value, as you can scoop the inside out and make the most wonderful tasty soup! You'll get a huge panful with a £1.00 pumpkin and you still have the outer to carve. The seeds can be dried and eaten as a healthy snack, just check out how much a small bag of pumpkin seeds are at the store and you'll realise what a bargain you really have !

Pumpkins should last 8 - 10 weeks if stored in a cool place. I was wondering the same before I lashed out my precious pennies at the weekend.
