I gone with BT as well, but I was lucky enough to get fibre in the area where I live so download/upload speeds are really good. I even got my fibre speed boosted from 52mb to 72mb recently. The only thing I didn't like is when I took out BT Sports (3 months after I took out BT broadband), they signed me up for a new broadband contract. There only mentioned it on 3rd or 4th page of the order confirmation, but who would have read it this far. I only found it about it when I asked them when my contract ends.

They really extremely poor these days. Nothing like the great provider I remember a few years ago. I was conned by an agent of theirs. He took payment for the line rental saver without providing a receipt and buggered off extremely quickly. I found out there was no line rental saver applied to my account through a call to the billing department and then had to escalate to a dispute with them over 3 months to get the money back...as a credit to my account! Incredible when I had text messages indicating intent. That broke my trust with them but I figured, it could happen to anyone but the speeds and reliability have been dreadful over the past 6 months. Utterly useless. Not worth the money at all. That broke the camels back and I said to retentions, that even if they offered the service for free, I would rather pay for a slower speed, that was consistent and reliable. BT Broadband, so far so good. I waited a long time for openreach to come round and activate the line and there was a fault with it also but they sorted it and since then, it's been pretty good barring the dreadfully slow, BT Home Hub 6.

I'm on the 100mb deal and it's been great. Had it for 3 months and connection has been fast and solid. Didn't think 1gb line was worth it as it's only 2 of us using the connection and it's considerably more over a year. Will see if they want to do a deal at the end of the twelve months..

because hyperoptic is CGNAT, you cant port forward without obtaining a static IP from them.

Which package are you on?

When I first moved in I was using a spare TP-Link Archer D2 and that got up to about 250mbps via wifi. Full coverage of a medium sized 2 bed flat and also the 3 bed mid terrace house we had before then.

You can get one for £50

Can someone recommend a budget ac router that performs well please?
seanyseansean
8 Oct 17 #127
Southlegend has already answered this, but to reiterate:

Hyperoptic cocked up by not building ipv6 into their network from the start and not having enough ipv4 addresses. As they still haven't fixed the ipv6 issue years after first trying they've used CGNAT to work around the lack of ipv4 addresses. This means that your router gives you a local/RFC1918 address, not a public one, your traffic goes to and from the internet further up on a public IP that is shared with other users. So you can't do port forwarding at all.

Regarding a point someone else made about options - i'm with Vermin Media and they're awful, but it's on a new build estate that doesn't have any other provider - BT, Hyperoptic or otherwise. It sucks but afaik the estate is a VM exclusive until the developer vacated the development, which could be anything north of 5-10 years away. So i'm stuck with a '200mbit' connection which is by any measure worse than my old BT Infinity 2 80mbit one.

Regarding the deal, it is superb and if I had the choice i'd be all over it, regardless of Hyperoptic failing with their network planning they're still a magnitude better than VM.
djwilliams100
8 Oct 17 #126
That doesnt make any sense? You wouldnt need a Static IP address to Port Forward as Port Forwarding it done by selecting your internal IP address managed by your DHCP on your router to allow traffic that hits your router to go through your Router firewall to a device on your network. . For example a 192 or 10 address.

Got a Pfsense box doing the routing, then a Linksys WRT1900ACS acting solely as a wifi AP. Realistically the linksys could perform both duties happily.

I think the users on 20 or 100mbit packages just need something cheap that works and for that the stock router's great. Gigabit packages though are a tricky thing. Say you ship something really new, shiny and awesome. You've got to support that device even through firmware updates which are frequent for these new boxes, staff training to keep up with changes is expensive. If you want to stay cutting edge you probably want to replace it every year, maybe two. Given a high end unit is about £100 and that must be paid off in a year, you're going to notice that amount on your bills. Then there's the risk that the high end router won't 'just work', that there'll be a bug or users will have trouble setting it up...

tl;dr high end routers are not a safe default. BT gets away with it because they have engineers idiot-proofing the boxes before they go out and have the man-power to maintain that

I ran this test just after 8pm. On my neighbours 5ghz wifi (they have a 5ghz capable router I setup for them). They're on the 100mbps package and they have no complaints.

That's also a pretty high ping for a Hyperoptic connection - you've got to take into account I did this from the flat next door. I average around 3ms over wifi on my own connection and 1ms via Ethernet.

Hope this helps!

They're using the provided ZTE router along with a Ubiquiti AC Lite wireless access point.

If you want to get an all in one solution then you don't need to get a router with a built in modem. You just hook the Hyperoptic Ethernet cable directly to your new routers WAN port.
southlegend
6 Oct 17 #113
Hyperoptic uses CGNat by default. Not sure if you know how that works, but the simplest way I can explain it is that effectively there are a load of Hyperoptic customers behind each single IP address that Hyperoptic have.

If you run a service that you want accessible on the internet then usually you would open the port up on your router and forward it the correct IP:Port on your internal network. With CGNat, the external request will never make it to your router.

This is why you need a static IP with Hyperoptic. You get your own dedicated IP address that isn't shared with anyone else.

Yes it sucks that you have to pay for it but IPv4 addresses are limited (especially for a newish isp like Hyperoptic) hence the usage of CGNat.

Uh... well, first off can you actually get it in your area? They're only in specific buildings.

Second, yes it will be faster. When you get the gigabit package, you actually get a gigabit. Rarely seen it be anything less than that. None of that peak-time drop.

Of course it helps that these guys don't have the realities of FTTC which is that the cabinets are hell for electronic interference and have limited bandwidth to the exchange.

Interesting - it does support my main point, though: internet providers (as any company) like monopolies, but they don't really have a good one like Google/Facebook/...

The problem is not that you have fiber by BT, the problem is that your freeholder signed a dodgy deal with BT Openreach. If that wasn't the case then competitors would eventually jump in, particularly if BT Openreach charged "£100/month" as someone here suggested.

Competition works. That's why companies are so keen to avoid it.

4 Oct 17 #90
They can - I live in one of those developments. Fibre installed by BT Openreach, no copper telephone lines so can’t get Sky or other ‘normal’ broadband and Virgin Media won’t install here. BT provide a fibre telephone and broadband service and force the residents to pay telephone line rental even though it isn’t needed with fttp. Hyperoptic looked at retrofitting here but won’t because a) The freeholder says they won’t allow another provider to cable the building because they signed an exclusivity contract with BTO to get it installed free/at a discount, and b) Hyperoptic won’t install to a large block where there is an alternative provider because it isn’t guaranteed they’ll get enough sign ups long term to cover the building installation cost. Although it’s all fttp, BT, Virgin and Hyperoptic infrastructure are all different and can’t use the same cables

The difference in upload speed is massive between hyperoptics and Sky/Virgin/BT, we're talking about 100mb/1000mb (depending on the package) vs 20mb different.. Hyperoptics is a fibre to the building (FTTB) solution..so your building has a direct fibre connection to the exchange.. Sky/Virgin/BT all have fibre to street solution that's why they can't offer 1000mb package in the first place...

w/ this offer it's 100mb up and down £22 / month, which costs the same as the ultra fibre from sky you mentioned but much better..

the biggest downside of hyperoptics is that it's only available to large development (mostly apartment buildings) in big cities....if you can get hyperoptics at where you live I can't see why anyone would choose other ISPs..

So basically I bought my house at the wrong time. House is approx 3 years old and has BT copper... it also has VM cable so it is not so bad.

They are still building houses at the other side of my estate, I do wonder if they also have BT copper or fibre.
noirnaranja
3 Oct 17 #75
I work in the industry. Openreach has no intention of increasing their copper network. There may be some very specific exceptions, such as phonelines connected into lifts in case of emergency, but the very clear direction that will be followed is that Openreach won't install any new copper into larger developments.

They may, or may not put fibre in. The developer may choose to go with an alternate fibre provider such as GlobalHyperFibreMegaNet. So, you may move into your shiny new house and find that you are only able to take fibre from GlobalHyperFibreMegaNet, who can charge you whatever they want.

3 Oct 17 #73
Nah.

If GlobalHyperFibreMegaNet have put fibre in the building then you have to buy the service off of them. There is no wholesale model unless BT Openreach put the fibre in. You will have no option to buy fibre from anyone else. There will be no phone line going into the building because BT Openreach aren't going to put PSTN into new developments of 30 properties or more.

I feel people are getting confused with megabytes and megabits. Internet connections always go by megabits which are a hundredth of a megabyte. So hyperoptic means you download tops out around 100 megabytes. Mechanicals can hack it.

+1 This is happening in the US. Comcast have a monopoly in large regions and prices are high and service is poor.
jomay
3 Oct 17 #65
Of course any business would *love* a monopoly. But fibre isn't that business. It's the Google, Facebook, Microsoft (etc.) of this world that have a monopoly.

Once the fibre company charges £100 a month there will be plenty of other options:

a) As long as you have a phone line you can get simple broadband or fibre to the cabinet (I think BT fibre up to 70Mbit/s works like that). Installing a phone line isn't expensive.

b) Competition: if £100 / month is way above the cost of fibre to the home then there will be other companies offering this service over time.

Neither points work well in the Google/Facebook scenario.
shabbird
3 Oct 17 #64

3 Oct 17 #63
Fine in principle.

But if you moved into a block of flats that was *only* served by GlobalHyperFibreMegaNet and they decided that they would charge £100 a month for a 200Mbps service would you be happy?

The point of businesses is to make money, and not having an option to go elsewhere means you either pay it or have no service. So far people have great things to say about Hyperoptic. This can't be guaranteed forever. I think someone like Sky would *love* to have a monopoly of people who couldn't go elsewhere...
garbagerich
3 Oct 17 #62
That's expensive . Ultra fibre optic from sky/talk talk joint venture less than £22 for 18 months line rental included for the same speed. So that's double the price for the same speed. Cold from me
jomay
3 Oct 17 #61
I totally disagree. This is not basic water/electricity/broadband. This is exclusive high-speed internet. You could run your own servers on this! There is no need for gov't to brawl in, destroy companies and stop innovation
.
In essence you are saying if someone built a high-speed train line it should be nationalised or opened up so other train providers can use it. That's a great way to stifle innovation and competition.

I might agree with you if this was about basic broadband.

This is the one i'm using amazon.co.uk/ASU…I4/

I got mine for £110

The wireless range is more than enough to cover a (very) large house w/ 2 floors. (I used to joke with my neighbours we should just one subscription and share the cost lol). and at peak we had about 15+ wifi devices connected and it worked fine.. Samsung S6 gets 300Mb/s speed about 10m away from the router w/ one wall in between.

Wired connection gets a solid 900+Mb/s (I tried once) but unfortunately the router is sitting in a cupboard room and there's no easy way to wire cables to the living room so I mostly only use wireless ..

Asus firmware is one of the best in the industry.. there're lots of options to play with if you're into that.

Their customer service is also fantastic. Touchwood, I've not had a single problem with them since I joined 2 years ago, but when it came to the end of my first 12 months, they gave me a fantastic discount to stay without any haggling, etc.

Had Hyperoptic for about a year now.. it never went down even once and I got consistent 300Mb ul/dl speed (wireless) and 2ms ping.. very happy about it.

keep in mind you'll have to buy your own AC1900 (or better) router if you want gigabit wireless connections.. the supplied one is adequate for wired connections but for wireless don't expect it to do much better than 100Mb

Another thing worth mentioning is you don't get a public IP (even a dynamic one) for free any more with hyperoptic, it's a non issue in most cases and their default NAT configuration works well enough in most cases (so torrenting, gaming, etc are just fine).. I've only had problems with port forwarding in Plex and you can pay a monthly fee to get a public IP..

I had the best ISP experience with Hyperoptic and I've been with a few providers at home and at work. They were always really nice to me and gave me a discount as I convinced others in the building to sign up. Only ever had one problem with the internet and I didn't realise that they had already e-mailed me with the issue and what they were doing to resolve it. So much better than Virgin Media; sadly I moved house so I had to go back to Virgin Media. Couldn't recommend Hyperoptic enough tbh.

The router they provide is limited and also tells you this on it's packaging and on their website. You need to invest in a decent router, or hook up a good access point to the Hyperoptic router as it's actually really good apart from it's wireless radios. How long have you had your package?! A quick Google would have given you this info.

I have a Ubiquiti AC Lite providing my wireless and it's good for about 400-500mbps. If you didn't know already, your chances of getting 1gbps over wifi are pretty much non-existent.

Prices are fantastic but I always feel there is a worry with hyperoptic

You have to remember hyperoptic pipe the building when its getting built. I know some buildings where they had Openreach AND hyperoptic which is good. The only problem is they now sometimes they seem to become the only provider of said building. Lack of choice is never a good thing, it should not be allowed for the building to be planned without Virgin/Openreach to pipe up each building too. Its obviously a business deal when the flats get built. I sure wouldn't want to buy a locked down property. 1GB sure its great but just knowing they can put their prices up willy nilly and you have no choice.
Tarquin8484 to Niz
2 Oct 17 #14
The building will have phone lines, so you'd be able to choose from loads of ADSL providers and BT Fibre (FTTC) etc.
Niz to Tarquin8484
2 Oct 17 #16
They don't, I have been to new builds that are hyperoptic only and this may be the start of many. Hyperoptic likely offer a VOIP service.
noirnaranja to Niz

BT Openreach have no plans to install 'PSTN' copper lines into developments of 30 or more properties going forward.

This means that if you buy a new house/apartment, unless it's on a very small development, your choices will be very limited for communications providers. BT Openreach *may* install an FTTP network and open this up to the wholesale channel to allow other comms providers to give you a choice. But it's just as likely that BTO won't bother and another fibre provider such as Hyperoptic will be able to monopolise this and be the only provider available. BTO have said that there are no plans to link other fibre providers into their network.

To me this is an entirely retrograde policy as we will end up with a very segmented market that will ultimately be a bad deal for the consumer. All the communications network should be run by one company as a national infrastructure, and as bad as Openreach are they should probably take care of it.

I just wanted to add my positive experience of Hyperoptic. I moved into my building in May and took the 100Mb/s service. It has been excellent.
Their customer service is great also - way better than you would expect for a mass market ISP. For a while I had very slow speeds and I suggested they might find other people in the building complaining and to check. They did that really quickly and told me they'd found a high fibre attenuation and had it sorted in a couple of days.
Contrast that with the two weeks it took OpenReach to get a man out to sort out a broken cable to my old house.Bottom line - if you can get this service I would heartily recommend it.

Virgin Media is awful. About this time last year my contract was about to expire with Sky broadband so I visited one of virgin media stores and they offered me a really good deal which included TV, 100mb broadband, phone line, £100 credit, sky sports and a sim. Once broadband and TV was set up, it turned out I don't have the £100 credit on my account, sky sports is not there and no free sim either. I had to fight with them for every single thing that I was promised, took me so many calls to actually get what I had in writing in the contract. Anyway broadband was good, for few weeks at least... After my cooling period ended, suddenly my speed at peak times dropped to 0.5-2Mb/s. Their customer service is useless and after about 10 calls I managed to find out they have an ongoing issue in the area and it won't be fixed for another 2 months. They decided to give me £20 or £30 credit to compensate it and I was told I could leave them if I wanted to. 2 months in and still slow as **** so decided to leave them. Got on the phone and I was told I will need to pay £350 to cancel my contract. Bunch of... Luckily enough a couple days later got a letter from them stating the price is going up and thanks to that I was able to leave.

Gotta see the distinction between the tech, marketing, and reality. Reality is that fibre optic doesn't do anything to speed up your connection on its own, it's just a new medium. You could pass dialup over it if you wanted.

Fantastic deal, but I wonder how long it will take for me to get Hyperoptic in my area, considering that it did take 5~ years to get regular Fibre in my area even though it is in Zone 2..

They honestly are a fantastic company.

The advisors on the phone have some much knowledge. I was trying to port forward and struggling due to it not being a static IP, when I called they said unfortunately they are still on IPV4 so I wouldn't be able to port forward a device without issues. The lady fully understood everything I was trying to do, more so than I probably.

She confirmed they do have a static IP package that's £5 a month, that I could use until they move across to IPV6 which is supposed to be in the next few months. She said hang on a minute, went away to speak with someone, came back and confirmed they have added 6 months of static ip to my account for free, and this should hopefully last until they are on IPV6.

Honestly some of the best customer service I have experienced in years. That and the fact when it came to renew my internet after one year with them on a contract. It was £4 cheaper a month, not more expensive. Couldn't rate them more!

I'm on their 100Mb package. Worth noting that the router they supply is slow, so on wireless you would only be getting up to 54Mb if you have the 100Mb or the 1Gb packages.

But, after I've plugged in my own faster router I am getting this over WiFi:

Agreed. I had to buy my own router when I was with them to get 90mb+ on WiFi.

What sort of router did you guys get? Im on the 100mb package as well and their router only gives me 55-60mb at max. Would consider trying out.

Shame Hyperoptic have atrociously poor network coverage and are only orientated around shared accommodation/high rise buildings and city centre businesses

Your not alone, on 200mb and getting around 30mb most peak times. Terrible service from Virgin. I'm 3 engineers in with no fix in sight.
Seriously thinking about throwing in the towel and looking for a better provider.

Yeah virgin are pretty terrible. I was on 300mbps, I was actually receiving 3mbps at peak times, which is when most people use it. I had to threaten using the recordings I had of speaking to customer service agents that I could leave if speeds were poor. Abit shady really. Using nowtv haven't looked back. No issues always 80 Mbps even at peak times.

I've just thought, can mechanical hard drives actually read/write at 125MB/s? If not it's going to be a bottleneck surely.
tarantulas to Tarquin8484
2 Oct 17 #17
Yes modern mechanical drives, even 2.5" 5400, can write at around 125mb sequential. SSD, or even downloading to a RAM drive before transferring to storage, is preferable but mechanical hard drives can keep up. Obviously not the case for 10 or 20gbit, but for basic 1gbit most people will be fine with mechanicals.
goRt to tarantulas
3 Oct 17 #23
mb vs MB - bits (network traffic) vs. bytes (hard disks) - 8 bits in a byte, so 8 times the speed.
I'm only going for the 100mb package, plenty to stream uhd with.
tarantulas to goRt
3 Oct 17 #25
Almost - Mb (megabit) vs MB (megabyte) - "mb" isn't an SI unit so obviously in the above context it was being used as megabyte, as hard drives are virtually never rated in terms of mega/gigabit in a consumer setting.

Tarquin asked if mechanical hard drives would be a bottleneck with gigabit, which they won't be when used as a download drive in a well organised box, 125mbyte sustained being enough for a gigabit connection.

Been a hyperoptic customer for about 2 years now. Lovely service, always been quick to resolve problems and gigabit is a fantastic speed to be running at. For instance I can download a multiplayer game while people are still fetching drinks, then join in the first round. Worth getting a decent WiFi AP though, the stock box is rubbish but with an aftermarket unit I'm getting 80MB/s over WiFi. Full 115MB/s over wired of course.
