For those that want to do some exploring in Greece, this is a great trip for April/May, exploring Crete (north and south) and Santorini from Birmingham.
24th-27th April You will fly from Birmingham to Crete (Chania) and transfer to your hotel in Agia Marina where you'll spend just 3 nights as you need to make your way to the south of the island for the ferry to Santorini so it makes sense to split up your time in Crete. In Agia Marina you'll stay at the highly rated Atlantida Mare.
27th April - 1st May You will catch the bus to Chania and then on to Bali in the south of Crete where you will stay for 4 nights. You could add in another stop in Chania if you wanted to break this up even further. In Bali you'll stay at the Bella Vista which has excellent reviews and is on the beach.
On 1st May you will catch the ferry to Thira in Santorini. You will stay for 7 nights in the Ancient Thera Studios in Perissa for 7 nights. On 8th May you will head back to the airport.
Details:
Book flights with ryanair.com from Birmingham to Chania (Crete) £71.98
Book transfers on hoppa.com from airport to Agia Marina £15.45
Book ferry (closer to time) Hellenic Seaways Highspeed 7 – Departs Heraklion at 9:00 and arrives in Santorini at 10:45. Economy class costs €56. Total £100.52

Excellent planning, chania is lovely would highly recommend a couple of days, the narrow streets on old town hide many lovely bars and tavernas. Only caution is that it can get windy around Santorini at that time of year and the high speed 7 can get cancelled. So you may need to be flexible in your Heraklion departure.

I'm flying into Heraklion in about 10 days time... not booked any accommodation yet. Any recommendations on which area to stay in Crete? Not looking to hire a car... somewhere peaceful, good sandy beach nearby but also a town/village with some tavernas/restaurants within walking distance. Good bus connections for day trips would be nice too. Don't want any sort of lively nightlife as have kids.

Kalyves is a quiet resort we stayed there in June. Most of the tavernas are on the beaches front so you can eat whilst kids play in sand. Also lovely beaches a couple miles west of chania which have very shallow bays and calm water.

Bali isn't in the south of Crete, it's in the north! Same coast as Chania, just further along.

Amended, I probably should have said further along the coast rather than South, in my own head that's what I meant!
