Received this in an email the other day, and it seems they are rolling out to all infinity 1 customers. Obviously it's only if your line can handle it, but a great boost nonetheless.

For clarification it puts you in the 76 package instead of the 52, and you don't need to do anything!

Lots of questions so here is the faq link

How long have you been with them paying full price? I joined up last month with offer on here and no email. Guessing it's a loyalty offer?

Not convinced. Been with them 3 months.

Existing customers of BT’s 52Mbps (9.5Mbps upload) capable Infinity 1 (FTTC) “fibre broadband” service will be pleased to learn that the ISP has decided to reward them with a free speed boost ‘up to’ 76Mbps (19Mbps upload) and a doubling of their cloud storage, but not everybody will benefit.
spongebob1913 to carltonbp
9 Oct 17 #4
quote the whole thing - "not everyone will benefit" (That's just because not everyones line will support the new speed, not because they aren't "getting it" per se.)

I'm guessing this is because Virgin Media are rolling out cable in loads of new towns and cities. Once I have the BT/Sky and all the other copper stuff can do one!
BKMacC to EmperorRosko
9 Oct 17 #10
The issue with Virgin is that they take existing customers for granted and cost tends to rise pretty quickly.
EmperorRosko to BKMacC
9 Oct 17 #12
You see the same thing with all of the providers tho, but atleast with Virgin, your getting a some serious speed. I'm a digital gamer on PC and the size of games these days, it takes a full night/day to get some downloaded while my mates on Virgin have stuff in 20 minutes.
BKMacC to EmperorRosko
9 Oct 17 #14
That's fine if that's what you need but you do pay for it.

I have no issue jumping from one provider to the next every 12 months but you can't do that with Virgin and they will take advantage of that. I had seen 2 price rises in 6 months. Last one was the final straw.

I wonder what BT plan to do with the infinity 2 customers. As it is now I'm paying £10 more for cloud storage and antivirus which I don't even use. Plan for me is too try and get a free upgrade to BT infinity 3 160/30 or lower down my package to BT infinity 1.

maybe its because they've realised calling it "infinity" yet having different tiers (with numbers after them) is actually a bit dumb.

Mine was upgraded last Wednesday. I've not received an email though.

Will they be doing this for customers who have ‘1’ or do you have to call and ask for it? Do they have to give new equipment or do anything to line etc?

9 Oct 17 #11
I installed my Infinity 1 today, having moved. No VM here so had to take what was on offer. If they give me the upgrade I'll be chuffed as the upload is a big downside for me at the mo.

I got the email last week too. Although not sure how to tell if its applied yet as only get 55 max down due to sync issues.

And extra cloud storage too - pretty neat.

9 Oct 17 #16
Just to say thanks

We're giving you two broadband boosts ‐ faster broadband and more cloud storage. All on us.

With your speed boost of up to 76mb, you'll be able to enjoy even more of the entertainment you love at a faster speed.

On top of this we are also doubling your BT Cloud storage for free so you can now back up even more of your precious photos and videos online, and access it from anywhere with an internet connection.

There's no need to do anything ‐ sit back, relax and we'll let you know when your boosts have been activated.

Just rang BT as I’m an infinity 1 customer with 3 months left of a 12 month contract. I was told there would be a charge to upgrade, but to call back 1 month before my contract was due to finish as they will advise me of new deals and it probably only be £5 more a month! Disappointed....

I happen to use both Virgin Fibre and BT Infinity (1) as I pay for the BB at my parent's place as well as my own house.

I have to say I actually prefer the BT setup - 'only' about 50megs download currently, but 10 megs up. That compared to about 70/5 from Virgin and Virgin seem to have been agressively throttling at peak times recently. No throttling that I can detect on BT plus you get Openzone access which is pretty useful. If they really do up it to 76megs I'll be even happier.

Both services have been pretty reliable, the BT slightly more than the Virgin but in both cases my problems have been solved by hub reboots. I think the BT hub is better than the Virgin Superhub - but I don't have the latest Superhub.

Got the email last week and immediately ran a speed test! .... 70 Down and 19 up! Woohoo!
On the downside though I've been getting a strange connection problem ever since. When Boot up my desktop PC or even when it's just been idle for a while and I open my browser, the orange light starts flashing on my hub and I have to wait about a minute brfore it reconects. After that everything's o.k but it's a real annoyance. This only came about since the speed upgrade so, free upgrade = awesome connection issue = rubbish!

I pay £5 a month for infinity 1
yes free upgrade to infinity 2
but extends your contract by 12 months
mine runs out in January and there’s no way I’m going to pay £25 month once my deal runs out

Errr there is no recontracting with this... None whatsoever. You can ask for it to be done immediately rather than waiting until 15th Nov at the latest which will require a recontract, but otherwise you don't. Oh.. and you don't have a choice.. they are just moving people but still billing them as infinity 1.

Spoke to customer services again, different info this time around, apparently if you request the upgraded you are recontacted, otherwise you just have to wait for the faster speed to be “rolled” out as such. They won’t say when annoyingly. Thanks OP for the heads up.

That will be 5 days out of 14 with no phone and treading water with my broadband.

Tell me about it I get close to my full speed on virgin of 200Mbit and I have only defected once to a different provider, been with Vrgin since the dinosaurs walked the earth when they were called Teleweast and even then they had no other speed contender and yes the customer support has become somewhat frustrating but I have so little line problems I'm not willing to divorce them for one bump in communication, I game allot as well and couldn't cope elsewhere with a slow under a 100Mbit line also for gaming the ping rate is usually the cause of allot of lag but never found it a problem on virgin. Anyway have some heat for a good deal if your on BT as more speed is always good.

I’ve got infinity 1 and re contracted for infinity 2 in July. My speeds actually got slower somehow with infinity 2 (sync issues maybe) but didn’t want to risk it and went back to infinity 1 and my speed went up.

Not true, customers with BT infinity 1 FTTH will be also receiving a speed boost to 76/20 in the coming weeks. This is probably more beneficial to me and others with BT infinity 2 FTTH as now we can drop to a lower package and get the same speed for less money.

only doing it so they can scrap the cheaper infinity 1 package.

They are likely shitting a brick because vodafone and openreach are in talks with the regulator to bring billions in investment in to a super-duper-fast-fast fibre network where vodafone will be getting preferential treatment and sole access for a certain amount of time and then speeds over and above what get offered to 3rd party sellers / providers

If your going to use this to upgrade immediately they won't do it, I rang up and they said you need to wait or it would be a new 18 month contract. Nice one OP. Just checked my DL speeds and they have increased by 50%. Didn't receive anything telling me about it either.

As a side note, there is always room for haggling with BT when you are renewing. Last time around I got the latest hub, even though I only had previous one and they didn't want to give me it. Also got a newer freeview box and also got hem to chuck in a set of the network extender plugs. Which was the 3rd set I've had off them for free over the years. I pay around 30 quid per month.

It would appear from their latest advertising that they now offer only 'infinity' or 'unlimited infinity' (plus a higher package with TV)

The lowest is advertising at 38mb, the top at 52mb. This makes it easier to 'upgrade' people to 76mb for 'free' ahem.

Only re-joined BT this week and glad I signed up to Infinity 1 not 2, else would be paying for something that I'm going to get for no extra, soon.

You will be recontracted and possibly at a much higher monthly rate once outside of your original contract term. I've been stung recently by BT.
stoneblade
10 Oct 17 #99
Quite often I get put through to my local service centre down here in Cornwall based in Truro. I think if your on hold a long time you overflow to the India support, normally more than 10 min in queue, or if you phone before/after uk service centres open.
stoneblade
10 Oct 17 #100
Sorry never meant a cab visit, they have to up profiles on each line in each cabinet, this is done centrally, but would do it in stages and batchs of cabinets.
spongebob1913
10 Oct 17 #101
sorry ... what??? you will be recontracted once outside your term???? Only if you agree to it petal, and you can always say NO!
stoneblade
10 Oct 17 #102
Not correct, you only get recontracted if you phone up and push to the front of the queue so to say. This is a free upgrade, they can't up the speed then contact you asking you to recontract, alot of people have had speed increases without even being emailed, so this would be a big legal minefield if they did.

10 Oct 17 #108
Coming up to 4 years now, but never paid full price. Received the email for the free upgrade to infinity 2. Not to bothered about download, but upload will come in handy

Main reason I haven’t switched is it’s cheapest way to get BT sport (obviously don’t tell them that when I renegotiate). Tried Virgin etc, but it always works out much more expensive then offers from BT + Sky.

Which ever idiot suggested splitting PL rights would increase competition and reduce prices for customers was a moron. If they wanted competition they needed to say every game must be on both providers. As the current situation simply means if you want to watch your team you have to buy into both products.

camaj
10 Oct 17 #110
I know they've just raised prices but I don't remember one in the last six months. Anyway, the important thing is the overall cost and speed, if you can get the same speed with another ISP for the same price, go for it. Virgin have always had fast speeds but at a price, if you just want decent speeds at the best price then you're probably better off with someone else.
Begize
10 Oct 17 #111
Have to disagree. I've been with Virgin for years (and NTL / C&W before them) and have pretty much always paid the same amount of £70 - £80 a month for the top level or next to top level phone, broadband and TV package. Through that period I've had countless upgrades to my speeds and hardware so I'm effectively now getting a much much better value service for the same money

Admittedly, if you just sit there and take the price increases every time, you will see costs shoot up. I have a calendar reminder to ring them every 12 months and re-negotiate. You should treat it like any other utility supplier and look around for the best deal and price every year.

Few months back, we received a letter which said something like - we are upgrading bla bla bla and we will be testing this and taking feedbacks / inputs. During this time it will be free. But later you will be given a option to stay and pay actual price or leave.

I don't exactly remember if it was infinity 2, we just thought we should stay with existing BT.
Scorpion
10 Oct 17 #114
Well this is a bit of a kick in the balls for those of us who pay for Infinity 2. Granted I'm not paying anything like full cost, but still it seems somewhat unfair given I had to pay an extra £1.50 a month to get infinity 2.

This has happened previously, last year I think. We were on Infinity 1 and got a free upgrade to Infinity 2, however no increase in speed for us due to the distance (I presume) from the exchange. Upload speed did increase a bit though... so yes, if you're maxed out on Infinity 1 then there's a good chance you'll notice an increase in d/l speed.

10 Oct 17 #127
Of course I did. Second time I called I was in my 30 day notice and the deal they offered was more than the previous offer. Finally found another provider and when they contacted Virgin to take the phone line, Virgin called to confirm this was ok and told me they could have given me a better deal. My response was they didn't, not even close.

my gf was stuck on BT infinity 2 for a year when my line can't even reach that speed. Each time she complained the speed never reached the advertised BT infinity 2 speed, these BT liars would keep lying that's the speed she should be getting or saying its due to 'interference' from tv which is causing the slowness. These knobs says are full of bs...the line can never reach the BT infinity 2 and they just keep lying to keep her in that expensive package.

All infinity 1 FTTH customers lines can go to 330/50 so they're the people that will see the full increase to 76/20 and that's a hell of a leap from the 52/10 they were getting. What your saying is true for most fibre to the cabinet customers, they would be extremely lucky to get the full bandwidth from this boost.

My 2 year deal on Infinity 2 is up in about 10 days, maybe I will wait a few more days before calling them to negotiate a new deal. I'd rather pay the infinity 1 price of course (with discount)!

10 Oct 17 #135
Spoke via live chat to customer services and because I've already renewed my Infinity 1 (did it the other week) to start this week, they said the speed increase would start at the same time as new contract. Hopefully that's the case! Might reboot router to check if it's already happened anyway!
spongebob1913
10 Oct 17 #136
if your speed varies from the distance to your router - the problem isn't with the line, its with your internal setup. Get yourself a laptop with an Ethernet cable in it, plug into the router and run a speed test that way - then you'll be able to see the true speed you're getting, and diagnose any issues you have in the house.
spongebob1913

yes it is. - they are doing it up until middle of November, it may not have happened yet, or your line may not support faster speeds....

When I recontacted (when they put line rental price they offered me Infinity 2 for £36/month including line rental) I said existing hub seemed to disconnect randomly once a day and was giving issues with wi-fi, The guy said to ring technical faults and explain the hub wasn't working properly and to ask that a smart hub was sent out. It seemed to work but then I had to make a follow up call as it wasn't sent out the first time. I got it in the end anyway for free, think they stuck a 9.99 charge on a bill for delivery but rather that than paying £60 for the hub.

I have just re contracted for 2 years, I’m stuck with Bt as I have FTTP. But I am paying 26.99 a month for infinity 1 but now getting infinity 2 speeds. So I’m sure you will be able to get something similar, I thought this was a good price tbh.

Hull area chose not to become part of BT, which is why you no BT phone lines and no Openreach. Instead you have the lovely "independent" KCOM  That nasty BT "monopoly" is the reason why other cities have so much choice. Enjoy!
DragonQ
10 Oct 17 #142
This is because the new G.fast Openreach packages are coming before the end of the year, which'll be 160/30 and 330/50 Mb/s. Hopefully Plusnet gets in on this as I'd quite like the 160/30 Mb/s package.

Heat added, but too little, too late for me. I had Infinity 2, but left BT 3 months ago. Joined Plusnet (who I believe are owned by BT, ironically) Get exactly the same speed, but for less than half the price

I have to mentally prepare my self before contacting bt, or else by the end of the call I will be screaming. This speed boost is on their website, but bt don't bother communicating this information to their customer service people just like many other things.

10 Oct 17 #151
In my case the email mentioned 76Mb speed boost, but router also still sitting at 55/10. Tried a reboot and hasn't forced it up. Email does say they'll let me know when it active.

We've had Infinity 2 in the past, so I know my line can comfortably support 80/20.

10 Oct 17 #152
To be fair, BT told me to delete a "scam email" I called up to enquire about when I was waiting for my cashback for joining their mobile network.

The email said my amazon card had been posted and I could expect it soon, sure enough it turned up in the post the next day so I doubt they know what they are talking about in that respect.
Kallb123

Sam Knows says:

My original deal was under £17 + line rental (I bought mine upfront) which has risen to about £19.50 + line rental. Am hoping for a new deal under £20 a month else will ask to drop down to infinity 1 in the hope that they will then upgrade my speed at a later date.

Here's what I was told on the phone to BT Customer Service (0844 776 9616) today, 10/10/2017.

They do not automatically upgrade a customer from BT Infinity 1 to BT Infinity 2 package. Instead, you, an existing customer on BT Infinity 1 plan, would have to call BT Customer Service and request the possible upgrade to your speed. (Notice "Speed", not "Plan".)
They will not offer to you, to upgrade to a BT Infinity 2 plan. Instead, if your 'line can handle' the upgraded speed "minimum of download 59 Mb/s - 80Mb/s; upload 19 Mb/s - 20 Mb/s", then you will be offered to re-sign a 24 month contract and be with the same BT Infinity 1 pack, but with increased speed.

To sum-up; you call them. They see if your line is fit for upgrade. They offer you the upgrade. (IF) You take the upgrade, your (EXISTING) package gets restarted for a new 24 month contract (same price as you're paying now).

If the situation is somewhat 'cleared-up' for people who would otherwise be confused, then I was able to be helpful. Peace.

as you've just fed a load of rubbish, no, you haven't helped anyone. recounting a conversation you may or may not have had with customer service isn't helpful. Especially when the link I posted (plus the FAQ link) basically contradicts everything you have written. And as that's in writing, not just hearsay, I'll assume the website, and attached FAQ is more accurate. Thanks.

I mean, it even says in big letters "YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO ANYTHING" - is that not obvious enough????
KiNG
10 Oct 17 #166
no, that is not correct.

its a free speed boost up to 76mbps on your existing package without renewing or re-signing up.

Potentially stupid question, but if I was looking to sign up for fibre with BT soon (or possibly Plusnet - I've put in my cancellation for Virgin already) should I sign up with a cheaper Infinity 1 package, and hope to be upgraded? Seems odd they're still marketing both for sale.
gopolog86
10 Oct 17 #168
Wont work according to guy i spoke to at bt as its for existing customers only and you would be new customer
Dakers
10 Oct 17 #169
But if all existing Infinity 1 customers are being moved to that speed, what happens to the Tier itself?
Still undecided between BT and Plusnet. VM are fine during the day as I work from home permanently, but in the evenings it's abysmal.

I've just cancelled with BT. A lovely service and experience but the cost is just too great. My last bill was £80+ and I just get infinity 2 and phone calls. The phone calls came to £28 and the Broadband was a little over £50 (with line rental). £30 for phone calls!?! It was only two hours worth. In this day and age there is no excuse for it. For better or worse I've moved to plus net with a maximum monthly cost of £48... that includes free calls and the same speed. Any service with British in the name rely on sticky customers that are attached to the B.
phead
10 Oct 17 #172
This is nothing to do with virgin or anyone else, its just rearranging the options to accommodate the G.fast service, and changing the average numbers for the recent change in advertising speed allowed.

You will also see a vectoring change at some point, for most average lines this will be the greater benefit.
spongebob1913
10 Oct 17 #173
guess its a gamble, but id say go for infinity 1, as you could increase to two as an option if you don't get the free upgrade, however if you go straight to 76, you wont be able to drop.
tomwoody

10 Oct 17 #175
Really stuck on what to do, lower to BT infinity 1 under a new 24 month contract and save a tenner a month for the same speed I get now or wait and see if a speed increase comes for infinity 2. I know all this g fast thing will be starting soon and not sure if it's better to wait and see.

dave859
10 Oct 17 #177
It is mostly but FTTH is becoming a lot more common and open reach have been making a lot of streets full fibre.

It seems very odd that open reach have started a 160mbps fttp service, could this be what's planned for the infinity 2 customers. ispreview.co.uk/ind…tml
RedmanDealer
10 Oct 17 #178
I would take the saving now (which is going to be my strategy when I call them). Even if you take a 24month contract, they will most likely upgrade you to g.fast if you call them up (they aren't going to say no to taking more money from you). The only downside if having to stay for 2 years without being able to move elsewhere
boabbyrab
10 Oct 17 #179

I've got BT infinity 1, which the contract got renewed last month. I've not received any emails regarding a speed boost but I thought I'll just check my speeds anyways. Getting the same download speed @52Mbps but the upload is close to 20Mbps on Ookla. Not sure if its been boosted cos I thought the default upload for infinity 1 is 10Mbps.

I'm currently using my own router, not the bt hub. Don't know if rebooting router will make a difference or if I need to reconnect the BT hub for it to be boosted. I've checked on SamKnows that BT FTTC is available, max dl 80Mbps, max ul 20Mbps so it s seems that I should be able to get a boost

As someone who remembers upgrading from 28.8Kbps to a massive 56Kbps, this comes as a rather pleasant surprise and also shows how far technology has come in a relatively short space of time.
