I wasn't aware of this, others may not be. You can use your debit card from any bank to pay in and withdraw cash from the post office. I knew many withdrew using the debit card but i did not know you can pay in also. You no longer have to go into a main bank branch.
This can save time and money if you have to pay for parking etc especially with many local branches closing so especially useful for the elderly.
Customers will also benefit from longer opening hours and more than 4,000 branches open on Sundays.
Just go into your local post office

I am with Barclays and tried to cash a cheque with my debit card in local Post Office -- they told me they don't provide that service. Not even sure if all P.O.s provide the banking service, as ours didn't seem to know anything about it.

Yep First Direct same
they provide special envelope and you can bring ur own paying in slip or they give a blank one to fill out.
this method is not good, it takes about 100% longer for a cheque to clear your account than paying it in over HSBC counter.
last time I did it at P Off it took so long to show I rang the bank to ask if there’s a problem!

Most of our local Bank branches are closing, only this year we've had NatWest and Halifax close. This would make depositing cheques and cash in so much easier. I bank with NatWest and have been dreading depositing cheques as I'd have to go all the way to the next town.

I feel worried for my local shop with a small PO- i paid in a couple of hundred quid the other week and noticed they put the money in a little wooden drawer. How many other people paid in cash that day i wonder? No security, flimsy little lock holding 100s or 1000s of pounds,no police around due to slimeballs in government- this all means the staff are exposed to dangers they shouldn't be.

If your banking a cheque ( Co-op bank anyway), you put it in a special envelope, it then takes ages to actually get get credited to your bank account.I much prefer to take it direct into the bank now.. Withdrawals are a good idea but my local PO has a cashpoint outside so no need to use the counter for that anyway.

What local Post Office? Most of then have closed or are closing. Some are reopening within Smiths or a Pub.
Another unintended consequence of the Evil EU whom classed the PO as having a monopoly and had to be opened up to competition, which then forced them to close and lay off staff!

What a load of crap - the monopoly was the Royal Mail not the Post Office! Another Little Englander loon obviously.
Cash deposit service is instant if you can use your card, takes ages with a deposit slip. It depends on your bank and their contract with the Post Office.
Cheque deposit needs an envelope and pay-in slip (plus cheque obviously) Not the fastest but cheques are slow anyway.
Cash withdrawal availability is near universal but deposits less so.

For depositing money, you need a paying in slip and envelope for most banks:
Some Banks will require you to have a paying in slip - a card on its own won't be enough.

The EU didn't mandate the way or extent to which it was privatised, or that a state monopoly was privatised at all, just that postal delivery liberalised and opened up to competition. a lot of people in government saw a way to make a load of cash for them and their mates so jumped on it.

I am in the process of applying for a local PO counter in my shop.
If the shop is following proper procedures the money in the till on the shop floor is limited and the rest should be in a time locked safe. The risk to the staff is not appreciably greater than their normal cash handling through the shop.
It was one of my concerns but if it is all handled properly then it should not be a problem for the staff.

My local at the end of a shop counter is open 7am until 11pm at night. Can't pay Halifax cash in there though. Only cheques with correct stationary. There is another full service post office where I can pay both Halifax cash and cheques, but they cut hours down from 8am - 8pm to 6pm. Reason is all you lot have not been using this service. Wake up folks! Have you not seen the signs? Have you not read the information posted to you by your back. This is heat from me as the way it was going I could see services cut again because nobody is aware. I've been using post office to pay money in for a few years now. Note.. Get correct stationery which is free via post.

5 Oct 17#81
Be warned I've found only the minority of staff are capable of working out how to pay money into an account and only certain banks allow crediting accounts... Natwest for instance require you to use a paying in slip and this has to physically be posted to Natwest by the postoffice for the money to be paid in! so the money takes around 2-3 days to reach your account so unless your practically house bound (only able to get as far as the PO) it's quicker just to wait until your going further a field
Some credit unions offer paypoint cards so you can pay money in at corner shops etc. which is more useful

Yes. Plus you can get books full of them from bank. Order online, or phone. You also need your bank branded post office envelope.. Maybe.. Different banks, different systems. Post Office normally carry a few envelopes so go get one. Information on how to get more will be on the envelope

Many banks will only receive coin if you have a large number of coin put in the small plastic pouch so they do not need to count it, but just need to weight it.

Probably previously mentioned but I thought i'd relay my recent experience using the advice from this post. Our local NatWest has been closed. It was probably one of the oldest banks in Leytonstone.
I went to the local post office to try out the above. The first teller gave me a NatWest envelope, where I was required to fill in the account no. and sort code and place the cheque in the envelope and hand it in to the post office. I was not very confident in this, so after filling in the details on the envelope I went to another teller and asked him what i should do with the cheque, now that i had filled in the envelope? To which he advised that i need a NatWest paying in slip!
Today I went into a NatWest branch (near my work place) deposited the cheque and asked them if I could have some paying in slips. I was advised that they no longer have paying in slips!
Opening post
You no longer have to go into a main bank branch.
This can save time and money if you have to pay for parking etc especially with many local branches closing so especially useful for the elderly.
Customers will also benefit from longer opening hours and more than 4,000 branches open on Sundays.
Just go into your local post office

Yorkshire Bank
I went to the local post office to try out the above. The first teller gave me a NatWest envelope, where I was required to fill in the account no. and sort code and place the cheque in the envelope and hand it in to the post office. I was not very confident in this, so after filling in the details on the envelope I went to another teller and asked him what i should do with the cheque, now that i had filled in the envelope? To which he advised that i need a NatWest paying in slip!
Today I went into a NatWest branch (near my work place) deposited the cheque and asked them if I could have some paying in slips. I was advised that they no longer have paying in slips!
