Do you work for the Chinese retailers or manufacturer? Lots of places selling S8 for under £490. Nice essay though. HUKD must control these posts before they make big holes in every body's pocket.

I love the Xiaomi Mi Mix phone i bought from banggood several months ago, after years of predominantly Samsung phones. Its a premium, flagship product that deserves consideration, as does this.

Stuff like this Xiaomi bring more choice to the marketplace, which is now pretty much dominated by the likes of Samsung and Apple. Choice brings competition and competition is a good thing for the consumer as it drives down price across the board.

Anything i have said is aimed at giving people an objective view and giving them information to allow them to make an informed decision on whether a personal import of a Xiaomi device or similar is for them.

Sorry you are too narrow minded to see that.

I'm quite aware about Xiaomi as a brand, how long they've been around and about their specific phones. They're huge in India, where I spend quite a bit of time and they sell direct there.

A specific phone having a good reputation means nothing when it comes to it's replacement. The new units have new mobo's and new processors which have no connection to the previous model. This ties in to issues with the phones that has nothing to do with being dropped - the Samsung Note 4's "lag, freeze, reboot", the LG G3's overheating, the LG G4's bootlooping, the Moto G 4's ghosting display to name but a few. Those are all crippling issues, most on major brands flagship models. The only way they can be resolved is by replacing mobo's/displays or often, a completely new phone. Hence my issues with warranty. Pretty straight forward

Got a 64gb 4x myself a few days ago and am now converted to xaoimi, well built hardware, love MIUI and my battery fully charged at 9am, 12 hours later is still at 71%! :astonished:

Glad I lost my LG G5 now! So the note 4x ain't quite as nippy but I don't care. Bought last years flagship from big brand LG only to have screen image retention issues, a battery that can't last a day and poor build quality.

Anyone unsure about Xaoimi, give their wonderful tech a try, you won't be disappointed!

19 Sep 17 #83
You keep switching between saying it will have poor reception and saying it will be completely non functional. Strange that you're suggesting you know better about my phone and it's functionality than I do, even though I have used it without issue on 4G for over 18 months. For "a tablet or phone shaped object", it oddly works as a fully functional 4G phone. Your comment is epitome of your B20 bias.
sam_of_london
19 Sep 17 #82
Before 4G ,phones worked on 3G , 2G for data. So it may still work at 3G speed . But the fast 4G speeds which are now possible will not be available compared to a UK network phone. Also when you are struggling to get a signal like in moving train or car etc , your reception may be much poorer . And if you don't have good reception , your phone is a tablet or phone shaped object. I struggle many times to get good signal in Central London so I would never buy a phone which will make the reception and data speed even worse.

Absolutely. Each individual needs to look at the facts, look at other peoples actual experiences (not subjective views) and then weigh up the risk versus reward for them personally.

So why is B20 not mentioned in articles?

19 Sep 17 #79
My comment was a quip that all phones pretty much "ship from china" as they are made there, thus by buying a familiar UK brand you are not in some way getting something (a) made here / europe or (b) "better" even though the brands themselves pitch themselves as western brands.

There are of course warranty differences, no one is disputing that, however i have added that most phones "breaking" is caused by droppage and no warranty covers that anyway and you do have a warranty though not to uk standard.

RE: the £200 price point. That is your SUBJECTIVE opinion. It is not an invalid one, however your instruction to everyone was "Avoid!" based on your SUBJECTIVE opinion. There are many OBJECTIVE reasons why people may chose a Xiaomi import phone - i have aimed to give OBJECTIVE reasons why i did or why someone might wish to, it is not up to me (or you) to dictate that people should or shouldnt buy this based on emotive language / false hysteria.

You've said all of this stuff before and continue to completely miss the point I am making when we've discussed B20. I am not disputing your reception comment. I am pointing out that you've said numerous times in the past that a phone which lacks B20 won't work in UK and is a tablet which is an outright lie.

You've said the phone that I own "will definitely not work at 4G in UK" which I pointed out as being false: hotukdeals.com/com…845 Despite this, you went on to comment that it is missing several bands which again is false. Like with most non B20 phones that get posted here, it has 100% of UK 2G&3G bands and 2/3 of the UK 4G bands but you still refuse to accept non B20 phones work in UK and ignore comments from owners of non B20 phones who tell you otherwise.

That demonstration didn't utilise B20. It was the 1800 and 2600 bandwidths.
sam_of_london
19 Sep 17 #74
That is correct as I have told you numerous times as no network in this country sells 4G phone in UK without B20 band . The government harvested B20 band from closing down Analog TV in UK . They sold the band to mobile network s who have spend billions in buying the bandwidth and building infrastructure for it . Being lower in frequency it is suited for mobile communication as it can penetrate buildings and hard to reach areas . Also having more bands in use means carrier aggregation is possible which brings faster data speeds especially in crowded places like London. EE demonstrated 1gigabit network speed in Wembley Stadium London using Xperia XZ Premium using carrier aggregation.

Your own words "Pretty much all mobile phones are shipped from China". This is not correct as most phones bought in the UK are MADE IN CHINA but not shipped from there. They are two different things and pretty much everything you buy in the UK is covered by manufacturer warranty. I have a Huawei phone bought in the UK and agree it is as good as Samsung or LG which I have owned in the past.

I would be happy to buy direct from China but anything over £200 is too risky due to lack of warranty and risk of getting hit by customs.

The amount of times I have pointed out your comments, is nothing compared to the amount of times you've criticised other people for their deals and opinions. I'm sure you must be aware that I am not the only person who has noticed your biased opinions. You comment suggests lack of B20 = poor reception yet you've lied to others repeatedly in the past by saying no B20 means it's a mini tablet and won't work in UK. Apparently pointing out your lies, hypocrisy and baseless accusations means I have a thick head
sam_of_london
19 Sep 17 #70
You seem to have all time in the world to criticise me. This phone is not tailor made for this country but will still work due to support for all the global bands . Those which lack UK bands do not work correctly or miss B20 do not get good reception. The more optimized the hardware and software , the better its performance . Get it into your thick head now.

Look at how long and how active I am on hotukdeals. Giving real world experience does not make me a Xiaomi salesperson
dreadzone101
19 Sep 17 #68
You do more than just that  . You have specifically criticised the retailers themselves for installing malware/spyware (especially Gearbest) and accused other members on this site for being commission agents and employees if they post these deals. In order to validate your accusations, you said you've received an email from Gearbest asking you to post here and be paid hotukdeals.com/com…819 You've also said that people are selling their soul to the devil for profit when dealing with them, yet you've posted 2 Gearbest deals in the past.

You've criticised Xiaomi even when spyware and B20 is a non factor:
hotukdeals.com/com…062
hotukdeals.com/com…778

Even when the deal is completely unrelated to Chinese sellers, you'll still criticise them:
hotukdeals.com/com…515
hotukdeals.com/com…522

You mention spyware hidden in official stock ROM yet you continue to ignore comments about this exact issue on your Umidigi thread: hotukdeals.com/dea…277 And then you'll say "the jury is still out"< because it hasn't been released yet but you'll find no problems with criticising other brands for the exact same thing, even if it's a pre-order.

On many occasions, you've displayed your bias against Chinese phones even when it has B20 and no incidences of spyware. You even slated OP3 for cutting corners and said it will be wasting battery because it has LTE bands which are unsupported in UK: hotukdeals.com/com…100 By your logic, unsupported LTE bands = battery drain so then how bad is the battery drain for this Xiaomi if it has at least 20 LTE bands which aren't used in UK?

Trmendously conservative edtimate. Being a privately-owned company it's hard to put a figure on them unless they apply for funding in the money markets. Last time they did that (in late 2014) it valued the company at $46 billion. Which at the time was $15 billion more than Sony! And 13 times the worth of Motorola!

This might be useful info for some:
Second Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 flash sale set for September 21
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 went on sale late last week in China. The first flash sale saw the device selling out in less than a minute.

Those who missed out can try again, as the device will be again available for purchase this week - the second flash sale is set for September 21.

As was the case first time around, all three 6GB RAM variants - 6GB+64GB, 6GB+128GB, and 6GB+256GB - will be up for grabs. Pricing is CNY 3,299 ($500), CNY 3,599 ($545), and CNY 3,999 ($605), respectively.

The Chinese company recently confirmed the handset will arrive in India "very soon", but an exact date is yet to be specified.

Xiaomi have been around a long time. The Mi Mix is highly regarded and this is the latest version of it.

Most phones have issues because they're dropped. No UK warranty will cover that anyway.
pgilc1
19 Sep 17 #57
I did. Lots of people do.

You're getting a lot of phone for the price.

I prefer the Mi Mix though. 6.4 inch edge screen, 6GB RAM / 256GB storage, ceramic case, got mine for just over £400. A Note 8 is over £800 and a iPhone X is £1000.

If you're risk averse or prefer the safety of a mainstream brand (and the price tag to match), then yes, go for a Samsung or an iPhone.
pgilc1
19 Sep 17 #56
I am saying this as I know. I've done it - bought a Mi Mix 6GB / 256GB.

A used Galaxy S7 edge is worth £190 if you sell it to CEX. Both phones will be worth proportionally more if you sell via ebay (but good luck with that)

It does have a warranty, just not a UK one. The biggest "killer" of mobile phones is dropping them, not reliability, which wont be covered by warranty anyway.

One advantage of this device is that you won't see anyone else with one unlike the iPX, S8 etc.

Xiaomi are very good with security patches (or at least in my experience they are) they also have a beta programme for latest versions of their firmware. And you should think of the phone as running MIUI rather than Android, they quite often upgrade the MIUI version but keep the Android version the same. So you can have two devices both running MIUI 8 but one is ANdroid 6.0 the other 7.1.

Theres still £100 odd between this and the cheapest S8, and dont forget its bigger than an S8 and an S8 Plus is £200 more expensive than this.

It does come with a valid warranty. Just not a UK one. Also if you pay by credit card, your credit card company are obliged to provide a UK warranty

Correct. It wont have the same support as Samsung, but it doesnt have the same price tag either. If you want to be a sheep and follow the herd then pick the Samsung - to the detriment of the cost to you.

These do have resale value. I paid £408 for my Xiaomi Mi Mix 6GB / 256GB variant. CEX will give me £261 for it. So thats £147 in depreciation. If i'd bought an S8 at the time at £599, CEX will give me £324 for it. Thats £275 in depreciation.

The most likely cause for a failure on mobile phones is breaking the glass screen. I can buy a replacement touch screen for a Mi Mix on ebay for £108 ish. Any phone repair shop will fit it for around £40. A replacement touch screen for an S8 is around £180+

Importing a phone like this isnt for everyone. If you're risk averse and want to go with the herd then yes, pay more for the Samsung. If you want to try something different (and in many ways better) then a Mi Mix or Mi Mix 2 are worth a look.

Sony warranty for the 'self-cracking screen' feature on the Z3, an LG G4 for being all over the shop with its battery and my Samsung S6 Edge for putting lovely big stripes across the screen. Actually, now I think about it, that's my last three phones. Personally, I wouldn't be without a warranty now. Insurance is one thing, but there's excesses, no claims, all that nonsense to deal with. In my defence, I did say I'd give you your point about the warranty but, although it obviously wouldn't be as easy to claim from as your precious Samsung warranty, Yes, that is what I'm telling you. I probably couldn't be bothered though, I'd get it repaired in town. The re-sale value will be good, as is the re-sale value of most xiaomi phones. Of course it's a standard phone, although, admittedly not to the UK. And by support, do you mean software updates? If so, xiaomi are among the best. Can you explain why my xiaomi Mi5 got updated to Android 7 about 3 months before my wife's galaxy s6? The fact is, you're a Samsung fan who doesn't really know what you're talking about. Hot for me, considering how difficult to get this phone even in China. I was looking at this yesterday but it is £70 more expensive so I leave it.

Cons: No double lenses, poor LCD even 2k and back fingerprint sensor

but the price, specs and design of the phone will blow the cons away easily.

I am also fuious that how many people had their phone sent back to the manufacturer or not having phone insurance.

sam_of_london, are you feeling okay? This is your 3rd Chinese phone deal (from a Chinese seller) in 2 days despite having repeatedly criticised these deals in the past saying things like; sellers are Chinese hackers who install viruses, hassle of waiting 2-3 weeks, they have no UK warranty, are subject to additional charges etc. You've even suggested that people promoting Chinese phone deals are actually Chinese citizens or employees who aren't in the UK. This is £400+ and another you posted is £300+ but no mention of VAT+customs yet you'll comment on a deal below £200 saying don't forget to add those charges.
