how would gearbest get this to you, to avoid the UK customs ? they can't put its worth $5 on this one. Anyone purchase larger /high value items from Gearbest?

Hi, I got the big one of these delivered from gearbest 6 months ago and didn’t get hit with any customs tax. They shipped it through Belgium.

Xiaomi are like a much bigger, Chinese version of Dragon's Den, aren't they? This company could become one of the biggest on the planet if they roll out international expansion.
Not until we reform our archaic fossil fuel oriented laws. Apparently we're more interested in £XX million infrastructure projects to support the continued use of the car and gridlock our towns and cities.
I remember a Casey Neistat video a year or so ago where he was riding his Boosted Board (electric skateboard) on a 2 lane cycle-way in NYC, was reprimanded by some jobsworth officer who told him he was unable to use this.
I'd love one for about town.

It needs to have indicators on it.

Like a bicycle, or a non-motorised scooter? The law is daft.
It's a silly area of the law which proliferates the continued air pollution in our inner cities, it's no wonder 9-in-10 people have some form respiratory disease.
The law makers are too busy being chauffeured around to care.

The last time I looked, any motorised self powered vehicle that is used on the road has to have a fullset of lights and reflectors. They were also supposed to be registered and have a number plate which in this type would have been a “Q” plate but I’m not sure if that is still the case as we no longer use the single letter reg plate system.

Yup, and these have lights and reflectors, alas no indicators.

It doesn’t have rear reflectors.
The_Hoff to migavupe
25 Sep 17#19
Well, the rear light is also a reflector.
migavupe to The_Hoff
25 Sep 17#20
Nope. It’s a light, not a reflector.

25 Sep 17#22
Look again, see the red reflective stuff? It's reflective.
migavupe to The_Hoff
25 Sep 17#24
Brake lights are not reflective. reflectors reflect light back at you making it look like it’s lit up, brake lights don’t reflect light or it would look like they were on and you were braking. Why do you think cars have reflectors in the bumpers etc?
HPMan to migavupe

Reflectors are required if your rear lights fail and people thinks it's a motorbike.

yep, it's a light AND reflector

That's something, if it's a moped it needs indicators and I'd love to have those on a bike to stop me having to wave my arms while taking a corner in traffic but... you guessed it, indicators are illegal on bicycles. No lights other than white at the front, and nothing but red at the back. Since an indicator on the handlebars is visible from both front and back it's not allowed.

I didn't think these were road legal?
CampGareth to leelou905

They're not, but the laws on this are pretty silly. For instance you're not allowed to put anything with wheels on the pavement. Anything. Wheelbarrow? Nope. Suitcase with wheels? Nope. Unfortunately I'm having a hard time finding the law verbatim for this, but it's something from the late 1800s.
I'm considering just getting a bike, fitting a BBS02 chinese motor to it (750W), then modifying it to run at the 250W and 15mph limits we have here in the UK (with something a little beefier and faster a button press away, for hills of course). It's legal, it'll get you going at *cough* 20mph which is easily enough to continually take the lane in city traffic.

I was thinking about something simillar and then I found this: 26 inch Smart Electric Front Bicycle Wheel for £277 tomtop.com/p-y…922
Although still waiting for a reply how heavy it is and how waterproof, and how big is the battery (will it fit under the frame etc)> But overall looks promising

Hub motor vs mid-drive is a whole debate in itself. The key bits are hubs are cheaper, lower torque, more quiet and generally simpler to use. They can be more efficient along flat ground but won't get you going from the lights easily.
I'd rather have a mid drive which is more expensive, louder, but uses your gears for better torque. Can be more efficient if you've got hills to contend with. Plus less in the way of spinning mass and can be transferred between bikes.

The battery is built into the hub. If you look through the pictures it shows the battery and where it fits.

I agree with your thought, but your proposed ebike would not be legal unfortunately.

I have the Pro edition of these which gives you 30km range rather than 20km as per the Youth Edition (these are the manufactureres claims anyway).
I did a round trip of 8 miles and there was still plenty of juice left in it. I just use it in the cycle lanes. Police have never said anything to me.

Think they get up to 16mph. Feels plenty fast enough when you're on it and you'll be overtaking most bicycles

Funny enough, it doesn't need lights. Last time I looked into this stuf you need Indicators, a horn, tax, a seat, insurance and a numberplate, but not lights. If it has lights, they have to work and if it doesn't, you can't use it at night time. Mind you, last time I looked was some 5-10 years back....
