Thanks for posting. Do we have to jump through all kinds of hoops to download one of these? Or put up with barrages of email spam? Only asking as once bitten now shy...

Not really, the DVD ripper has the installer and a Word doc with the license in it, the others below are just Word docs with a link to download the special pre registered installer.

Thanks rcom. I'll try downloading the one I'm interested in and see what happens.

The 'Get it free now' link downloads a 22.3 Mb file to install. Not tried it yet though.

I already use the older versions of some of these freebies, so a free update is awesome!! HEAT!!

Some of the software looks dodgy (besides the Ashampoo one)

Dodgy? How so?
It's all perfectly legit and well known software, whether the software is actually any good or not is another matter.

He possibly meant that is it legal, which it is not in this country to make copy's of DVD (digital media is legal) Anyway don't let that stop you as the police are more concerned with higher priories like having a police helicopter flying over my neighborhood for 3 hours trying to catch some one who stole a bench off the local golf course with a membership of 10k a year.)
I used to use this software about 10 years ago for ripping DVD's and it was pretty good back then but cant vouch for it now. videoconverterfactory.com/tip…tml
United Kingdom
It remains illegal to rip DVD no matter what is your purpose to do this as of June 2014. Due to restrictive copyright law, it has always been copyright infringement in the UK to rip a DVD. The UK government finally legalizes the process of making personal copies of digital content.

Unfortunately we don't know what was meant by the comment, we only know it wasn't related to the Ashampoo software.

Those two sentences on that site contradict each other. If the "Govt finally legalizes personal copies" how can it remain "illegal to rip DVD whatever your purpose"?
Not that anyone ever really took notice of supposed illegality of copying their own stuff.

Fair argument I guess?.
But in hindsight, IF all your obvious was to be laid out flat 'as is' or something, then such Companies like the above ( + alllll those 'similar' like them), should by rights, allllll seize to exist then right?.
But yet ... (refer to my immediate above comment above this one for an example of what I'm talking about).
Showing that those murky water's aren't as murky after all?, and/or perhaps they actually are?, but are giving it enough 'time' before the 'entities' as a whole, then start to bring forth their own noise ... (it wouldn't be the first time would it?, but as of the here and now, who truly knows?), lol.

Good post OP. Only thing I would add is in my experience, most driver related programs are worthless. The vast majority of your hardware will already have driver updating software installed on your PC, and failing that Windows does a pretty good job of keeping them up to date. You don't really need a third party program installing who knows what on your pc in addition to slowing it down on start up

Dvd fab use to be the best software for ripping. Years ago use to go on a freeware site and use to clog up 40Gb drive with free software, have 50 times that and have virtually non. No crashes or slow running lesson learned.

tried this out, registered ok, ripped a couple of episodes ... only 70% is there ..... waste of time. They still want you to purchase it

Wow!, that be a 'CLASSIC' cliché that?. :-(
The 'ripper' ripped you off?. :-(
There's an irony in there somewhere ...
I had it in mind to try this out myself in some DVD Movies I own, just for the sake of it, I may not bother now (still thinking).

You know what, the Software as per the OP's Deal Freebie isn't actually half bad!.
I haven't grabbed it yet, no, hehehe, but I do have some small prior knowledge of it (which for my next 2 Cents of fame, I believe is possibly better perhaps?, hehehe).
The OP's DVD Ripping Software and the like were once own by a Company called Slysoft, who had a wee few different DVD like 'stuffs' all over the place, eg. a DVD Media Player (competing head to head directly with Cyberlink's PowerDVD Player), DVD Decryption Key (separate from the DVD Ripping stuff), as well as DVD Ripping stuff too, lol.
Then several moons later, Slysoft got acquired by their new Boss, Wonderfox ...
So, IF Wonderfox have maintained the same/similar sort of diligence that the Software Company's 'paymasters' in the form of Slysoft did, then this could potentially be very good I reckon? (as Slysoft had been around for quite a while).
Wonderfox on the other hand (as of the back end of last year at least), I'd never heard of them?.
They could be part of a bigger picture conglomerate chain, a massive long time pre-existing Company in it's own right, or a newish upstart Company in itself altogether? (or whatever?, lol), I haven't as yet researched any of that stuff as yet ... hehehe.
went and got handbrake instead (free). You have to install a dll file to allow dvd ripping but it works fantastically .... I looked on youtube and theres a video of how to set it up. You need VLC as well
