It is better, in terms of being cheaper. I think its unpopularity is due to the up-front cost being much higher.

??? These have more than four blades,
I've used a hydro 3 and a hydro 5 at the same time. I don't know if the 5 clogs up faster but it definitely shaves better in my experience, The fact that the lubricating strip can be moved out of the way on the 5 is also an improvement over the 3.
