Not worth buying. Yes its cheaper than other places but you will not get to enjoy it as it's laggy, made in poor quality, loses connection to controller.

If the product is emulating games, then it needs to be faithful e.g same graphics, frame rate, sound reproduction. That's what the product is advertised as. That's not my opinion, its fact.
As for if it's a deal, then that is subjective for sure and I agree with you.
LeftResponse to fakesoundsoflondon

You said what the last guy said in a different way, indeed it is subjective. The 'product advertisement' has nothing to do with whether it's a good price compared to other retailers. Some people will still want it, and want to know if it's cheaper. There is no alternative available unless you know how to use a RaspberryPi (you said this yourself), so I don't want to deny people visibility of a cheaper product from x retailer. There are millions of terrible products out there, from this to anti-wrinkle creams that arguably don't take 10 years off your age. Even though the emulation is FAR from perfect, NO emulation is pixel perfect. People bought them and left good reviews and you can still play Sonic the Hedgehog, it's just not as good as the original. Even though as I said, that isn't the reason I'm voting hot.

I didn't vote it cold or hot. Just asking how is this a good deal. Also how should I vote it or or cold? Does one simply look at price and say this is the cheapest I've seen it, therefor it's a deal? Or this price is the cheapest I've seen and it's a good product, there for it's a deal?
For me some if the product is good and listed the cheap, it's hot. If the product is crap, and listed cheap it's cold. I'd rather not buy it. But for some it might worth it.
Also, i have many original consoles, nes mini, retropie, gpdxd, psp / vita (home brew), and pre-ordered snes mini.
I can tell for a fact this product is not fit for purpose e.g. Does not play megadrive games as intended. This is easily established when you compare it to the original console or a good emulator. So it's not an opinion / personal preference.
That being said, it not unusable nor is it broken, but it's not a good product. And like I said, it can't be compared to a retropie as that's requires some Technical knowledge and time configuring.

There's a reason this is cold, cheaply made badly emulated bag of crap. That new HD flashback one that ATGames made is supposed to be just as bad. For £39.99 you could get a Raspberry Pi 2 which would do this and 100 times more stuff.
That a good enough reason for a cold vote??

Not really. By your knowledge, I should go vote cold on every single iPhone deal on the site because I don't like iPhones (regardless of price). If something is cheap and a "deal" (bare in mind, the site is called HotDeals), then its a Hot vote surely? NEEEEEEXT.
aseddon130 to LeftResponse
9 Sep 17#16
How is that a valid comparison? I phones are divisive due to personal preference but on the whole they are functional and work great.
This thing no matter how you look at it is poor, when compared to the likes of the NES Classic (setting aside the Pi2) as the emulation is really good, controllers are solid replicas of the he originals and it features HD input, whereas this does not. It has poor sound, very poor emulation, crappy controllers and while the nostalgia may get you for 20mins it doesn't dampen the fact that this is a poorly made product and the Mega Drive deserves better.
That isn't opinion it is simply fact. Check any review of the thing anywhere on the hehe net and the consensus is just that. I tried one at smyths in Bolton and thought it was awful.

HUKD isn't about the quality of a product, it's about the price comparison. This could be on sale everywhere at £50 and it could score one star in every review, it could be absolute dirt in quality but if one store sells it £10 cheaper than anyone else and the OP finds and posts it then it is a hot deal.
By all means great if you reply and inform everyone that a Raspberry Pi is better but to vote an item cold that you can't find cheaper just because YOU don't like it or have formed an opinion based on reviews is pretty sad.
i take it you don't own one, I assume your opinions are based on hearsay?
LeftResponse to ristac
9 Sep 17#35
I hope people read what ristac is saying here. For the record, they're always based on Google. It will be completely based on reviews they can quote, then say they experienced it themselves to 'prove their point'. As a rule of thumb I only believe the reviews with "Approved purchase" next to it. I don't believe what people say on here, because hardly anybody will own one. The net is full of sociopaths. :joy:
I sure as hell don't own one of these, but I'm not going to pretend I do and give it a glowing report either. People feel the need to enter into a debate about other "better" products, and "why". They can argue until they're blue in the face, RetroPi is better (I have it) but its irrelevant. I have nothing I even need to prove, the price for this product is cheap. For those confused, I'm not saying don't share the information, I'm saying that it's a Hot price. People are voting cold, and I don't know whats so hard to understand. Meanwhile, I'm just going to sit and silently laugh about people posting the same information about RetroPi being better.. and STILL voting Cold.

It's not about the product, its about the DEAL. If you want to argue schematics, then how about that fact that people won't have the time to setup/configure or more importantly, the knowledge? Would it be cheaper to buy a RaspberryPi, then hire a technician to set it up? Would a friend want to download illegal ROMs? I have a Pi, but I'm not narrowminded enough not to see the uses for this. I think iPhones are inferior to Android, just like you feel this is inferior to the Pi. But despite everything you said, none of this even scratches the surface of my point. This isn't hotukopinions.com, judging from the 394 degrees I would say this is a "HotUKDeal" for this item, is it not?
It's not about the comparison, I think you're missing the point.

The main problem is, people make their own rules and minds up. They vote cold if they don't like the product, or even the poster themselves.
I would love to see a "reason" button for cold votes, with a multiple choice radio button where people HAVE to select a reason from a list. It would be interesting to see what % of people vote cold for the wrong reasons, or BS about finding it cheaper elsewhere. :joy:

Not trying to be a smart****, but how can it be a hot deal if the product is not worth the price?
I mean from exp this product is poorly made and buggy as hell - if it was fit for purpose then the price is amazing.
As for raspberry pi route, I don't think it can be compared, as the customers will need some technical knowledge and will have to download the roms etc. So can't be compared.
LeftResponse to fakesoundsoflondon
11 Sep 17#73
Sure its junk, but doesn't fit YOUR expectations of the product. It performs its purpose, hence why its sold units. It doesn't really matter if some people don't want it, we're a community right? If you're a member of the community here are some likely scenarios.
A) All the deals are cold, so it won't pop up on popular searches. They don't look into it further on Amazon, but buy it at a further inflated price because of the 5 star reviews.
B) They find this thread, and know a good price from a bad one. But then they see our comments and learn what a piece of s*** it is. This is more useful information, EVEN if you still think its a bad price.
C) They find the thread, read the comments and buy it anyway.
Read the reviews, because between a few of you I've seen 1 old youtube video of one not working and a few bad articles around its original release. The rest is just people "claiming" to own it to jump the bandwagon, which I don't mind (its actually funny). Sure there will be a MINIMAL people that actually do own it, but it won't be any of you. :relaxed: Now there ARE multiple amazon reviews voting it 5 Stars here, so equally there reports from verified RECENT purchases saying it works and reports saying it doesn't. Nobody can categorically say ALL generations and EVERY device is a bag of s*** can they? People will still want to buy it, as much as it pains me to say it.
I'm hoping the controversy from all this will at prompt some sort of rules page. The biggest problem with this is there are no rules, so who really knows what we should be voting on? I would like to think people use this as a 'knowledgebase' of good and bad prices, and if this is the case, then voting cold on something because you don't like the product wouldn't really work. You're denying them visibility of a good price, you have to think of the people that want this.
Admittedly I shouldn't of said (or came across) as "this" is how you 100% should be voting. No matter how much I feel it is the best way to vote, this topic is entirely subjective. What you should of been saying is "kiss my subjective a**". I mean looking at the heat on this thing I was obviously quite convincing! I guess it was well played. But honestly, I will always sit by voting hot on a cheap price, no matter how many different ways its worded it to me.
On a sidenote, welcome to HotDeals! I'm flattered you registered a new account to reply to me, but just FYI, I am as stubborn as they come. (I'm not going to lie, you made me chuckle a little. Are you really going to try and convince me that you own this junk? I know its not relevant, but can please hear what you have to say about this. Your friend had it right?) :joy:

This is a terrible, terrible device. It's not actually made by SEGA, it's made by a company nobody has ever heard of, under licence.
These mini consoles are basically emulator units, they run a "software emulated" mega-drive from their own hardware.
The emulation is poor, and the games are clocked at the God-awful PAL speeds. It makes Sonic feel like a snail and the soundtrack is equally under-clocked, giving a very depressive touch to all the old SEGA jingles.
The device is physically poor quality and feels very cheap. The joypads are a nightmare, they simply won't work unless you are aiming them directly at the console.
In all, it's a poor recreation of the original MD. Save your money, if you buy one after reading this, then...... sorry, but I told you so.
Either wait for an official mini, like Nintendo have done. Or just buy a old Megadrive online (better yet, find a Genesis, the games ran at much better speeds).

Eh? I mean it legitimately, what are you talking about? What does 'why why replied' mean? I genuinely can't tell what you're trying to say, are you trying to argue schematics?
There is nothing I haven't covered, but I will try another way. Some people like this product and it has good reviews, so people might have used their friends and want to buy it. AGAIN its better for those that can't setup RetroPi, can't be bothered, want to download illegal roms or MANY other reasons. Some reviews complain about a couple of things, but that's not really relevant as this is an alternative. As mentioned I have a RetroPi so you're not telling me anything new by saying its garbage. It's baffling. :joy:
The main thing is, it isn't really fair for those that do want it by voting it cold because you prefer a RetroPi. If anything its a little selfish, you can tear it apart in the comments but people will search items on here because they want them, and with correct votes they will know this is a cheap price for the item. You don't vote hot on an good item with a bad price, why would you vote cold on an item with a good price? It isn't useless to everyone because some people have bought it and left good reviews.
You will be helping them more by voting correctly for the price, because it will appear in the searches then at least give them the opportunity to make their own decision by reading the comments. I can't stop you from denying people this visibility of a low price, and I've given up trying. Humans are stubborn creatures, my mind won't change either (no matter how many times the same arguments are repeated LOL). Some people (like my quoted friend) will argue irrelevant nonsense to get the last word in, but my aim is for people reading this to understand where I'm coming from and vote accordingly.

Hot for the price of the item as I don't think its been this cheap before? Good on spotting and first post yey!
I'll just add to how bad this item is though.
My dad bought one ignoring my advice. The sound is horrendous, the controls don't work unless you awkwardly point the controller directly at the machine and the emulation is just bad. If you really want a emulator machine just do as people say and get a Raspberry Pi 2, load RetroPie onto it and pick up a cheap 360 controller (or if you have a extra wireless controller laying around you can get a wireless dongle which will let it work with the RP2), it works better in every way and looks a darn sight better instead of a cheap plastic brick and cheap plastic controllers that don't work.
Again hot for the price, however the item it's self is bad.

I bought one of these at Christmas and it's still working fine 9 months on. It's a good machine for the price, although the sound is awful, and the wireless pads work by infra red so if you're playing sonic and move the pad ever so slightly sometimes you'll die as the pad doesn't register what you're doing. You can buy an old wired Megadrive pad which works fine
Anyone buying one of these - look around for something called a Mega Expert Passport (£40 at Funstock Retro currently) which is another gadget made by AtGames specifically to work with this and it fits into the cartridge slot and takes an SD card and you can download ROMs of MegaDrive games and literally fit every game ever made onto a 2GB SD card.

By all means great if you reply and inform everyone that a Raspberry Pi is better but to vote an item cold that you can't find cheaper just because YOU don't like it or have formed an opinion based on reviews is pretty sad.
i take it you don't own one, I assume your opinions are based on hearsay?
It's not about the comparison, I think you're missing the point.
I would love to see a "reason" button for cold votes, with a multiple choice radio button where people HAVE to select a reason from a list. It would be interesting to see what % of people vote cold for the wrong reasons, or BS about finding it cheaper elsewhere. :joy:
(that's not a comment on this particular deal by the way)
A flawed product on sale is no more appealing than a flawed product at full price (to a point)
I mean from exp this product is poorly made and buggy as hell - if it was fit for purpose then the price is amazing.
As for raspberry pi route, I don't think it can be compared, as the customers will need some technical knowledge and will have to download the roms etc. So can't be compared.

Heat added just for that comment
I had a similar thing to this in the past, around about the same price and pretty much ended up binning it. A real shame.
There's a new version coming in October. The SEGA Mega Drive Mini HD. 85 games, HDMI with 720p output and 2 wireless controllers.
Games list -
Non-SEGA games:
Sadly it's £80. It does look the part with it's design but if previous entries to the Sega range by ATGames is to be taken on board, it's highly likely to be crap.
This is a waste of money. The IR makes it hard to play and you lose connection.
The sound is terrible.
It freezes.
So unless you think something is hot when everything it's supposed to do it does poorly or not at all, keep moaning that voting this cold is trolling. I voted cold to advise its crap. It's a waste of money. You will not like it.
A discount for a bag of crap doesn't make the bag of crap any less crap.
I'm currently sitting here typing this while a piratey copy of Medievil is running the attract mode on my original PS1 bought in 1999. Original equipment is where its at, and I doubt very much if this item will last as long as my PS1 lol. If you don't care then just install MAME or whatever else on a PC and use the money saved to buy a decent controller.
Either way it's still a bad product.
Mortal kombat ? Finish him!
really poor quality and inaccurate performance
Let me do likewise...
A Raspberry Pi is a far, far better alternative than these crap boxes running shonky emulation.
Spare pad (£8):

Anyone buying one of these - look around for something called a Mega Expert Passport (£40 at Funstock Retro currently) which is another gadget made by AtGames specifically to work with this and it fits into the cartridge slot and takes an SD card and you can download ROMs of MegaDrive games and literally fit every game ever made onto a 2GB SD card.
The gamepads use infrared so you need line of sight and you have to point the controller directly at the console all the time.
If you think it's still worth £40, fair play to you but the poor emulation sullied the experience for me so I returned mine.
Once I had mine I looked around and saw the same issues everywhere. Wish I checked before.
Such a shame
Thanks OP
