I was looking for winter tyres, and found this. It fits many of the novadays' cars, and has good ratings and reviews. XL has stronger cords.
tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyr…htm has rating of 91% which is amazing, if you asked me. They are not Chinese, which is most important, has good wet grip and other ratings. Just ordered myself a set for £213 shipped.
Other sites has it for 85-90pounds/piece.

UK extends north of Hadrian's Wall, where I live. Scotland can have some really harsh winters, minus 22 degrees Celsius not too long ago. Winter tyres have been a real surprise to me, and my family, over the last few winters. I always thought they were just advertising hype, but they offer amazing grip in the snow. Do a bit of research, if you can be bothered.!

Ouch!
I lived in Inverness for 15 years and have owned many winter tyres so "I can be bothered" I now live in the centre of the lake district which doesn't get gritted.
I was just curious if it was a BMW owning southerner!

Anywhere where the average temperature is below 7 degrees c................. you get fined in Germany if you don't have them on your car, even when there is no snow or ice.

Where do you live to mean it never drops below 7degrees c? The D3 is fine for use all year round in the UK as are most modern winters. Plenty of folk in europe use them all year round with far higher summer temps then us

If you read my earlier comment above you would know where I live. It's a misconception about 7 degrees being a trigger point as uk winters are generally mainly wet, winter tyres perform worse in the wet than most summer tyres do, so temperature is not the only trigger. I generally put mine on as and when required and not just because it's winter time. Take last winter for example it rarely dipped below 10 degrees where I live but it was extremely wet so I never put them on at all.

Fair enough. If I could recommend one thing though, pay the extra £10 or so for runflats, it's really not nice changing a flat in the winter.
Here in the UK it's perfectly legal to retrofit runflat tyres to a car provided it has deflation detection or TPMS fitted. Not sure about Lithuanian law though.

Winter tyres are good in the UK too. They have much higher grip levels in the colder temperatures.
Also runflats offer terrible ride quality so I avoid them totally.
I'd avoid anything that's not a top brand tyre too.

Not true about "Top Brand", check the label for wet grip. I have been using Goodride tyres for years now, and the grip is amazing. Just check the ratings for the "Top Brand" tyres, and you will be shocked.

Runflats are not terrible ride quality if fitting winter rims i.e. smaller diameter and higher profile, they only ruin the ride on low profile tyres. Besides I'd rather drive home with a flat in safety than risk changing a tyre in dark, slippy conditions!

Completely agree, in fact, Nokian have better ratings than a lot of your more expensive brands so i believe it's a very ignorant and misinformed way of thinking "most expensive is best

Totally agree. I run Nokians on my BMW E91 over winter with winter allows (16") and last year they got me out of a few situations and that was just cold and ice. I will be changing my summer alloys over to wonter alloys in October and running these Nokians all winter until late Feb, early March. Well worth the money indeed and proven make in Europe and the Scandinavian counntries!!!

Nokian are a premium brand and not usually very cheap, well they weren't when I last looked to buy some.
A few years ago I had Nokian winter tyres fitted to my wife's commuting car and they were amazing. We called the car the "snow mobile" and then ran the same tyres through the whole of the year and they had great grip even when it was warmer, hugely better than the, hmm I think the word I would like to use would be censored - very disappointing should we say, Pirellis that were on it before.
I would buy another set of rims and fit Nokian winter tyres on our current car for the colder months, but I can't really justify it, so I will stick with Uniroyal Rainsports which I've found have fairly good grip in the cold.

Just another mention about "Top Brand" tyres. What does that actually mean? To me it means the most expensive, not exactly a way of judging the efficiency of a tyre. The new labelling system has made it much easier to get some sort of idea of tyre efficiency.

They've been around quite some time. I bought some tyres from them 18 months or so ago, I don't recall any problems at all - I just checked my old emails, bought one day, delivered two days later.

Having lived in Munich for the last 5 years I can vouch for winter tyres massively, not just in snow, but in wet and cold conditions!
Has anyone got a tip on picking up a set of steel wheels here in the UK? I find it easier to keep a complete set of summer and winter wheels instead of refitting the tyres on the same rims each time.

For mine I searched for my pcd on ebay for used steel wheels which are usually cheap as chips and then bought brand new winter tyres to fit to them. So for example 5x100 Steel wheels.
There is also centre bore and offset to think about however so its worth checking this site for your car/the car the wheels are from.
Offset is how far the wheel sticks out in relation to the mounting face of the wheel, lower the offset the more it sticks out.
Centre bore is the circular area under the centre cap that the wheel sits on, for expensive alloys you can get mounting rings to fit wheels with bigger centre bores than your vehicle but for steel wheels its not worth it.
