CO is lighter than air so near the boiler and slightly above head height. Sad to say that mine is in the cupboard with the boiler too, in my defence I only recently moved in here. Going to fix it now.

I had mine next to the boiler in the cupboard but the service engineer moved it to outside the cupboard up high about 6ft, he said that was the optimum place.

Doesn't Amazon C&C still charge for delivery?

Not only essential for boiler areas but also for gas oven kitchens.
I was shocked a few years ago to find the the source of an alert wasn't the boiler but rather the gas oven.

A gas engineer in my house was perturbed at fact I used a small camping stove to make espresso coffee, because of the Carbon Monoxide dangers - but seemed to think a gas hob was OK. At the time I said I couldn't see how a gas hob wouldn't emit more Carbon monoxide and must be equally as dangerous or safe.

It's too complicated for me to understand the details but what was explained to me was that gas ovens are significantly underestimated as a source of carbon monoxide. This is partly because for some reason we don't tend to have ovens serviced.
A properly functioning oven with clean secondary air holes, primary air intake and correct pressure and clean hobs and pilot will be okay - although even then the advice is to cook for prolonged periods with a window open.
Non stick oven liners can be a problem causing blocked air holes, low oxygen and re-burn.
It's certainly an eye opener.
I don't know if I'd use a camping stove inside the house. The issue of "re-burn" is something I don't fully understand but I was told that domestic ovens are designed to minimise dangers that are otherwise inevitably present
The two best gadgets in life are smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

And multi-fuel stove. Glad we had our one (actually 2) 2 years ago. It started beeping, a few minutes later the stove starting throw back smoke. The fire brigade came in with a specialised team that deals with Carbon Monoxide. They checked us all, while the firemen dealt with the smoke. I was the only one with high level of Carbon monoxide in my system, but it was caught on time. If you value your life or the life of your loved one, invest in one of those. J

Ditto that and invest in two if there is another fuel-burning appliance (especially if it is solid fuel) in a different room.

CO alarms should be a standard in every house but so should an annual boiler inspection and service IMO, especially if the boiler is more than 10 years old.
