What's the score with the smartphone market at the moment? Especially the lower end - this is £10 more than the Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 from over 2 years ago, and lesser specced... I thought the tech should advance or price should drop? Genuine question, not just a rant!

It's happening all over the low-mid range market, low end specs are working their way up in price. Just look at the Moto series. The new G5S is £220 with a Snapdragon 430, a lower-end SOC than the Moto G4 and even the Ultra 6, yet significantly more expensive than both.

It's the weak pound that's responsible due to the bank of england keeping interest rates artificially low (some also say it's got something to do with brexit).
High end prices are also affected. We now have flagship phones approaching £1000 which is ridiculous.

Lol... Interest rates have been low for something like 7 years... You believe it's that that's to blame for an exchange rate that's crashed over the last year? :D:D:D We all now why it is...

You can get the xiaomi redmi note 4 for about the same price as this from aliexpress or gearbest. That one has much better specs than this huawei. I guess too many people in the uk are timid when it comes to ordering from China so companies like carphone warehouse can get away with selling low spec phones like this huawei for relatively high prices.

Do remember phones from ordered from China do not have duty or 20% vat.
Unless customs intercept it.

And they are from third party exporters so quite a bit more expensive to us than to the home market. Face it, those who haven't gone the direct from China route yet (i saw the light a couple of years ago) get royally shafted when buying a phone here.

Having owned both the Huawei Honor 7, 8, Huawei Watch, Band Z1 and the Honor Band 3 I insist you give them another go.
Regular updates to handsets, including optional public beta testing and their VMall means you get UK warranty (admittedly, I haven't needed to use it). Hell, even my Band Z1 and Band 3 get regularly updates.

does Huawei install much 'crapware' on this phone?
or is it like the Moto G5 minimal ??

It depends what you consider crapware. Huawei doesn't use stock android and apps. It uses an OS overlay called EMUI which changes pretty much everything about the stock android interface. It's quite a bit different to what you will find on a Moto, it's not necessarily bad though.
