These books are incredible stuff. So rich in detail, adventure and suspense, they reminded me why I fell in love with reading in the first place. Originally published between 1995 and 2000, this epic trilogy has been turned into a brilliant stage adaptation at the National Theatre, a radio drama and an eight-part BBC adaptation will follow soon. (And the least said about the film, the better).
After seventeen years, we'll finally get to read La Belle Sauvage (the first book of a follow-up trilogy, The Book of Dust) when it's published in October - but in the meantime, I can't recommend these highly enough.
Northern Lights Lyra Belacqua lives half-wild and carefree among the scholars of Jordan College, with her daemon familiar always by her side. But the arrival of her fearsome uncle, Lord Asriel, draws her to the heart of a terrible struggle – a struggle born of Gobblers and stolen children, witch clans and armoured bears.
The Subtle Knife Lyra finds herself in a shimmering, haunted otherworld – Cittàgazze, where soul-eating Spectres stalk the streets and wingbeats of distant angels sound against the sky. But she is not without allies: twelve-year-old Will Parry, fleeing for his life after taking another's, has also stumbled into this strange new realm.
On a perilous journey from world to world, Lyra and Will uncover a deadly secret: an object of extraordinary and devastating power. And with every step, they move closer to an even greater threat – and the shattering truth of their own destiny.
The Amber Spyglass Will and Lyra, whose fates are bound together by powers beyond their own worlds, have been violently separated. But they must find each other, for ahead of them lies the greatest war that has ever been – and a journey to a dark place from which no one has ever returned . . .

The movie had amazing casting (aside from the lead who's constantly slipping accent really annoyed me) but just... wasn't good.
It was like someone had given them the bullet points of the first book and that's it. The movie was just a series of events lookely linked together, it failed to provide a cohesive narrative. Also fairly criminal was the changes to the ending, and ending which in the book completely turns the story on its head.
There's a BBC series coming soon that will hopefully be better.

^This. Though I don't agree that Book 3 is terrible, the ending certainly is. I thought it was too rushed and a massive let-down.
